UK: BEENHAM: WOLF FAMILY
English/Nat
British people often describe themselves as a nation of animal lovers...
And one British family, in particular, is living-up to the idea.
They may reside in a small village west of London, but the Palmer family share their home with a pack of wolves.
This is the Palmer family's back garden. And if you're wondering about the high fence - here's why. The Palmers share their home with seven wolves.
The unearthly sound of wolves howling has barely been heard in England, outside of zoos, since the 1600s. But now it's back.
Roger Palmer is a former banking executive who fell in love with wolves when he visited a zoo in the United States almost 30 years ago.
Now he keeps four North American and three European wolves - alongside his wife and three children.
The wolves, fed on a diet of sheep stomachs, may look ferocious. But Palmer insists they're simply misunderstood:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
From early childhood days, children are indoctrinated with fables like Red Riding Hood, the Big Black Wolf and the Three Little Pigs. So it's inevitable that wolves have a really bad reputation.
And when you put that with the fact that you hear them howling - you almost feel them howling before you hear them. If you're having supper in our house, your back will start tingling before you can actually hear them. You stop and listen, and, yes, it's the wolves howling. So you can understand why they've got a very strong, bad reputation.
SUPER CAPTION: Roger Palmer, wolf enthusiast
If you drop into the Palmers for a quiet cup of coffee, prepare to share the kitchen with a wolf or two.
It's all part of family life for Lara Palmer, who's 12. She's been dancing with wolves for as long as she can remember:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Everyone thinks they're scary because of Red Riding Hood, but it's not true. In the wild, they wouldn't go for anyone. They're more scared of humans than you would be of them.
(Question: What do your friends think when they come round and they see a wolf?)
They think it's very strange. They haven't met anyone else like us.
SUPER CAPTION: Lara Palmer, daughter
The Palmer family is home to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust, a charity set up to counter the general view that wolves are man's enemy.
For this family, at least, wolves are man's best friend.

MAPPED Berkshire wolf on the loose – can it reach YOUR front door
MAPPED Berkshire wolf on the loose – can it reach YOUR front door.
Armed police are desperately searching for the predator after it went missing from UK Wolf Conservation Trust in West Berkshire.
And according to wolf experts, they can travel a huge 50 miles in a day.
This means that the canine can reach London, Southampton or Bath by tomorrow.
It could then get to Leicester or Cambridge by day three.
Who Are A Rocha UK?
A Rocha UK is a Christian environmental charity specialising in nature conservation. It is part of the 18-country A Rocha International family.
Our purpose is to mobilise Christians and Churches to care for the natural environment. We do this through our practical nature conservation projects and by educating, inspiring and resourcing Churches, schools and individuals to care for the earth, including by campaigning on biodiversity and climate change.
We have a committed supporter base, run two community nature reserves and the growing national Eco Church scheme, and have an expanding national network of conservation partners.
A Rocha UK wants Christians to care for the environment - for God, for nature, and for everyone in their communities - as an expression of their faith.
