Umm Qays
A day hike around Umm Qays, outdoors lunch followed by a trip on a caravan alongside the Jordanian border.
About Umm Qays,
Site of the famous miracle of the Gadarene swine, Gadara was renowned in its time as a cultural centre. It was the home of several classical poets and philosophers, including Theodorus, founder of a rhetorical school in Rome, and was once called “a new Athens” by a poet. Perched on a splendid hilltop overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, Gadara is known today as Umm Qays, and boasts an impressive colonnaded street, a vaulted terrace, and the ruins of two theatres. You can take in the sights and then dine on the terrace of a fine restaurant with a breathtaking view.
The Al-Himma therapeutic hot springs are located around 10km north of Umm Qays and were once highly regarded by the Romans. There are two bathing facilities: a privately-run complex, and a public bath complex, with separate timetables for men and women.

Archaeologists find Hellenistic temple and water tunnels
(3 Sep 2017) LEADIN:
A Hellenistic temple, along with a network of water tunnels, has been found at the Umm Qais archaeological site in Jordan.
The temple is the first of its type to be found in Jordan.
The team from Yarmouk University in Jordan say they hope there will be more discoveries to come.
STORYLINE:
The Umm Qais archaeological site, north of the capital Amman in Jordan, is home to Roman, Byzantine and Islamic ruins.
This area, overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the Yarmouk River, has witnessed great empires, and each has left their mark.
Now a Hellenistic temple, built during the 3rd century BC, has been discovered in Umm Qais, proving that Ancient Greece was present in the area before any of the other civilisations.
It is the first Hellenistic temple discovered in Jordan.
A team from Yarmouk University, a Jordanian university located in Irbid, made the discovery and Dr Atef Al Shiyab, head of the Department of Archaeology at Yarmouk University, led the excavation.
The team began to work on this particular site in 2013, and they found the first indications of the temple in 2017, completely buried in the dirt.
After further excavations they found Hellenistic pottery and remnants of the temple.
Atef Al Shiyab says he is excited by the discovery.
This discovery is so important because it is the first Hellenic temple in Umm Qais and the Near East, and it will draw attention to the Hellenistic settlement in Umm Qais, he says.
Al Shiyab says the excavation has revealed there are layers of settlement at the site with the oldest one being the Hellenistic temple.
The temple is built following the Greek architectural design Distyle in Antis.
One of the main finds of the excavation was the altar, which was found in front of the entrance.
Professor of Materials, Engineering and Restoration at The Hashemite University, Firas Alawneh says they hope to be able to restore the temple.
The rebuilding and restoration is a complicated and difficult process and it is going to take more than two years until it is complete. We will follow the original measure of the columns and use the original stones that we discovered and conserved in storage, and we will use them again on this location, he says.
Another discovery was a network of water tunnels that passed under the temple and through the ancient town.
Al Shiyab says the presence of this water tunnel, that leads to the bath near the temple, and its vicinity to the 'nymphaeum', a fountain consecrated to the nymphs, led the team to believe that this Hellenistic temple was dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the Sea and other waters, in ancient Greek folklore.
He says he hopes that in the future the site can be opened to the public.
Our goal in the end is to make the place available to tourists and to encourage tourism in Umm Qais. But we need to continue this project so we can discover the rest of the temple and the water tunnels, he says.
The team are set to continue to excavate Umm Qais and say they hope to obtain new funding to enable them to search for more Hellenistic-era buildings.

متحف أم قيس Gadara Museum
This film is about the Gadara Museum. Gadara Museum or Umm-Qais Museum is one of the many distinguished museums in Jordan, which are located in many Jordanian archeological cities. The Museum was a distinct house in both the Ottoman and the Emirate of Transjordan ages. It belonged to the Rosan family, specifically to the Gadarene mayor (Moktar) Faleh Fallah AlRosan. After the Gadarene people left the Ottoman city around the year 1987, the house was restored to become an archeological museum. It includes to this day many unique Roman and Byzantine artifacts that were found in the region. The Jordanian filmmaker Baker Alkarimeh directed this film.
