During my visit to South Korea a big part of my trip was to pay my respects to the soldiers (of all nationalities) that fought for freedom during the Korean War. One of my stops was the U.N. Memorial Cemetery in Busan. It is a very moving and peaceful landscape to reflect on the cost of freedom.

Nicolas Frans Wessels fought in the Korean War... after the war ended, he returned home to the Netherlands.
More than sixty years later, Wessels is back in Korea... to be laid to rest here in this country... alongside his brothers in arms, who lost their lives in the war.
Our Kim Hyun-bin brings us his story from Busan.
Nicolas Frans Wessels was a Korean War veteran from the Netherlands.
He fought fearlessly against North Korean and Chinese troops during his deployment to Korea in 1953.
He was fortunate to survive the war and live a long, full life,... but many of his comrades were not as lucky.
His family said he always thought of his fallen brothers, and Korea had a special place in his heart.
Mr. Wessels died in April 2015 at the age of 85.
His final request was to be buried with his fellow soldiers at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan.
He got his wish.
I feel very proud, of course, that the Korean government and Korean people made it possible to bury my father on Korean soil. After he died last year, it's hard to say what emotions I feel right now, but I feel proud, and I am happy that my father is here in his final resting place.
With the help of Korea's Ministry of Patriot and Veteran Affairs,.. Mr. Wessels can now rest peacefully alongside his brothers in arms.
Mr. Wessels' family members, along with the Dutch ambassador to Korea and other Dutch veterans from the Korean War attended the burial ceremony on Thursday.
The cemetery in the southern city of Busan is the resting ground of two-thousand-three-hundred UN soldiers from the Korean War.
One-hundred-17 of them hailed from the Netherlands.
Mr. Wessels is the fourth Korean War veteran to be buried in the cemetery since 2015.
If Korean War veterans want to be buried here in the future, we have over two-thousand vacant plots here at the UN Memorial Cemetery and the government will offer its full support.
In May of last year,... the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs changed the rules to allow the international transfer of remains from a veteran's home country to the cemetery... so veterans of the war could be laid to rest in Korea.

[Bird's Eye View] UN Memorial Cemetery and Park
On this sacred ground, battle casualties from the Korean War are enshrined in the world's only cemetery for fallen UN troops.
Its features include a Memorabilia Hall and Memorial Service Hall that show what it was like during the Korean War era.
The UN Forces Monument has exhibits of photos & materials related to those buried here.
- Since its registration in 2007 as a Modern Heritage property, it has established itself as a sacred learning site beyond time and space.

United Nation Memorial Cementery of Korea, Busan South Korea
The UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea honors UN soldiers from 16 countries and UN aids from five countries that were killed in battle during the Korean War from 1950-1953. This serene park spreads across a grassy plain area of 135,000 square meters. Some notable sites and memorials include: Memorial Service Hall, Memorabilia Hall, two Turkish Monuments, Greek Monument, Australian Monument, British Common Wealth Monument and two ponds. The Memorial Service Hall and the Memorabilia Hall were constructed in 1964 and 1968 respectively. The citizens of Busan dedicated the Main Gate in 1966. There are many annual events held here such as April’s Tributary Ceremony of the Veterans of the Korean War, May’s American Memorial Day, June’s Korean Memorial Day, and October’s UN Ceremony Day.

We go now to the story of a Korean War veteran who asked to be buried alongside his brothers in arms, who lost their lives in the war.
Now, a year after his death, the Dutch soldier's wish has been granted.

Korea - United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan
The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK; Korean: 재한유엔기념공원; RR: Jaehahn yuen ginyeomgongwon),[10] located at Tanggok in the Nam District, City of Busan,[nb 2] Republic of Korea, is a burial ground for United Nations Command (UNC) casualties of the Korean War.[nb 3] It contains 2,300 graves and is the only United Nations cemetery in the world. Laid out over 14 hectares (35 acres), the graves are set out in 22 sites designated by the nationalities of the buried servicemembers.
The Korean War began when North Korean People's Army forces attacked south in June 1950. As the fighting progressed, temporary military cemeteries for battle casualties were established by United Nations forces near the towns of Taejon (July 9, 1950), Kwan-ui (Kwan-ni),[13] Kum-chon,[13] and Sindong.[14] When the North Korean forces pushed towards Busan, these cemeteries had to be abandoned.Later, as the Battle of Pusan Perimeter developed, temporary cemeteries were established at Masan, Miryang, and Taegu, with a Busan cemetery being established on July 11, 1950. As the fighting pushed into North Korea, temporary cemeteries were established in or near the towns of Kaesong, Sukehon, Wonsan, Pupchong (Pukchong County),[13] Yudarn-ni and Koto-ri. Some 11 division-level cemeteries were established in the first two months of fighting and later 5 UN military cemeteries were established in North Korea.
At the beginning of the war, the nearest U.S. Army mortuary affairs unit was the 108th Graves Registration Platoon in Yokohama, Japan, which was searching for the remains of missing World War II American airmen. The 108th was reconfigured as the 114th Graves Registration Company and deployed to establish temporary cemeteries at Hungnam, Pyongyang, and Suchon as the fighting continued. Supporting the 2nd Infantry Division was the Graves Registration Section of the 2nd Quartermaster Company, which collected the remains of Allied and American soldiers to be further processed by the 148th Graves Registration Company. When UN forces launched the Inchon Invasion in September 1950, a platoon from the 565th Graves Registration Company accompanied them. Other mortuary affairs units included the 293rd Graves Registration Company, activated in April 1951. It was difficult to recover remains and conduct burials in Korea, due to the rugged geography and harsh climate, and the threat of unexploded ordnance and booby-traps.

On June 11th, the remains of a Canadian veteran of the 1950-53 Korean War arrived at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, with his beloved wife and grandson. The remains of the late Albert Hugh McBride, who died in 2017, spent one night here at the Seoul National Cemetery and were buried at the UN Memorial Cemetery in the southern port city of Busan the next day. We had the chance to meet with the family members of McBride to hear his story.
