Raffles Place Info:
Raffles Place is the centre of the Financial District of Singapore and is located south of the mouth of the Singapore River. It was first planned and developed in the 1820s as Commercial Square to serve as the hub of the commercial zone of Singapore in Raffles Town Plan. It was renamed Raffles Place in 1858. It is now the site of a number of major banks and features some of the tallest buildings and landmarks of the country.
Raffles Place is now dominated by Skyscrapers, some of the tallest buildings in Singapore, which are the locations of flagship banks. United Overseas Bank tower was completed in 1974 on the old Bonham Building site, later renovated and expanded into UOB Plaza. Other towers such as Singapore Land Tower, Clifford Centre, Ocean Building, OUB Centre, and Republic Plaza have also replaced the older buildings. The three tallest buildings in Singapore were located on Raffles Place until the construction of Tanjong Pagar Centre in 2016

I like the lights. Too bad they stopped running it like this after a couple of days, maybe they will illuminate it like this again for the F1, would seem like a massive waste of good lighting if not.

Description of Singapore:
Singapore (officially the Republic of Singapore) often referred to as the Lion City, the Garden City and the Red Dot is a global city and sovereign state in Southeast Asia and the world's only island city-state. The nickname «Red Dot» is a reference to its size on the map, contrasting with its achievements.
Singapore is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. This city combines the modern skyscrapers with a medley of Chinese, Malay and Indian influences and tropical climate with tasty food, good shopping and vibrant night-life.
Five Cool Facts About Singapore:
1. Fountain of Wealth at Suntec City [01:57] is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fountain in the world.
2. The Merlion [00:29], a half-fish, half-lion beast is a fitting symbol of Singapore. The «Singa» or lion represents the animal that a Sumatran prince saw which resembled a lion and the fish is a tribute to Singapore’s history as «Temasek», the ancient sea town.
3. Singlish, a Singaporean patois mixing English with the odd phrase of Chinese, Malay and even Tamil. Many Singaporeans have a habit of adding «la» to the end of their sentences. For example, «okay-la» is one example of Singlish.
4. Buildings in Singapore cannot be higher than 280 metres [02:23] because of busy air traffic. Buildings that scale this height include: One Raffles Place, OUB Centre, UOB Plaza and Republic Plaza.
5. Singapore is an extremely green city with gardens [01:19], trees and jungles everywhere. They are transforming into a «city in a garden» a current government campaign. It’s also very clean due to its littering laws.

Sculptures : Homage To Newton by Salvador Dalí / Bird, 1990 by Fernando Botero @ UOB Plaza Singapore
Art Sculptures : Homage To Newton (Salvador Dali) and Bird (Fernando Botero) at UOB Plaza. There two bronze sculptures on the ground floor, one in the UOB Plaza Two atrium also called city room which is designed by Salvador Dalí ('Homage To Newton') and the other a bird, designed by Fernando Botero, located outside the building . UOB Plaza consist of two late-modernist skyscrapers in the city of Singapore. The complex has two towers, namely UOB Plaza One and UOB Plaza Two. UOB Plaza One is a 280-metre tall building with 67 floors, and was completed in 1992. It is the headquarters of the United Overseas Bank and major financial corporations such as UBS. UOB Plaza Two is a 162-metre tall building with 38 floors and was completed in 1973 with the building reconstructed again in 1995.
Homage to Newton, 1985
Artist: Salvador Dalí
The sculpture is semi abstract, but we can still see that it is a sculpture of a man with a ball falling from its right hand, and it suggests Sir Isaac Newton discovering one of the most fundamental and important physical law. Dali has created a sculpture that looks realistic, yet does not depict reality. He has also made people ponder over his artwork. The sculpture appears solid and heavy, yet there are two open voids. The torso of the figure and the head of the figure have been opened up. Open spaces in the figure's head and torso symbolize an open mind and heart—two characteristics the artist felt were necessary to achieve Newton's revelation and all human endeavours.
Bird, 1990
Artist: Fernando Botero
The Colombian artist is known for his endearingly rotund figures, and this piece is typical of his style. His paintings and sculptures are, on first examination, noted for their exaggerated proportions and the fatness of the human figures and animal figures. Although Botero's Big Bird is unrealistic, for no bird will ever be so fat, one can easily tell that it is a bird. There is a quality of humor in the piece of sculpture. Although the sculpture is appears big and round, like a ball, it appears to be quite light and hollow, perhaps because of the light hearted ideas it represents. it is Botero's style to represent objects and figures by fattening them. He said An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it.
