A mass protest in Tehran on Monday commemorated the 40th anniversary of the US embassy takeover by university students in 1979.
Demonstrators gathered in front of the former site of the US embassy known as the 'den of spies' in the morning and marked the anniversary by burning the US flag and re-invoking the incident by a theatrical display of actors representing US, UK, Israeli, and Saudi Arabia in captivity.
Commander-in-Chief of Iran's Army Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi addressed the rallying crowds saying, The Americans will continue their enmity towards us. They are like a proverbial poisonous scorpion whose nature is to sting and who cannot be stopped unless it is crushed.
In November 1979, a group of university students took over the US embassy, believed to have turned into a centre of espionage and plotting against Iran. 52 US citizens were held hostage for a total number 444 in the aftermath of the takeover.

Iran youths realized truth about US decades ago: Leader
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iranian youths were more than three decades ahead of their time when they called the former US Embassy in Tehran the den of espionage.
The Leader was addressing a group of school and university students on the occasion of the Student Day which coincides with the takeover of the former US Embassy in Tehran by revolutionary students on November 4, 1979.
Iran hostage crisis
The Iran hostage crisis, referred to within Iran in Persian as تسخیر لانه جاسوسی امریکا (literally Conquest of the American Spy Den,), was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. Fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981), after a group of Iranian students, belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who were supporting the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. President Jimmy Carter called the hostages victims of terrorism and anarchy, adding that the United States will not yield to blackmail.
The crisis was described by the western media as an entanglement of vengeance and mutual incomprehension. In Iran, the hostage taking was widely seen as a blow against the United States and its influence in Iran, its perceived attempts to undermine the Iranian Revolution, and its longstanding support of the recently overthrown Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Jan 2020
After the recent events happening in Iran and the region, such as killing Major General Ghasem Soleimani in Baghdad airport by Americans, Iranians have shown renewed anger towards America and Israel, asking for their exit from the region. The terrorist attack united all the people of Iran against the U.S. for the sake of their popular General.
Many Iranians believe that the revenge for General Soleimani assassination has not been taken equally from his killers. Attacking the American military base (Ein ol Asad) in Iraq, was not satisfying for people as the revenge. They are somehow still thinking about a hard answer but are not sure how and when it should happen.
In Tehran many murals and art displays of General Soleimani can be seen, with the “American Soldiers Cemetery” in the Den of Espionage (former U.S. embassy) being one of the most significant exhibitions. It displays the empty coffins of American and Israeli soldiers symbolizing the hatred and anger of Iranians towards the terrorist attack.
Iranians are not a fan of war but they are known to take action when needed and this stance is seen in all generations and classes of people in the country......
Iranians chanting ‘Death to America & Israel’ marking 40th anniversary of US Embassy takeover
Thousands of people gathered at the former US Embassy in #Tehran and other Iranian cities on Monday, chanting ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’, marking the 40th anniversary of the US Embassy takeover.
Demonstrators were seen burning US flag replicas and waving signs mocking President Trump. In preparation for the anniversary events, Iranian officials unveiled new anti-American wall murals at the former embassy – still referred to as the ‘den of spies’ in Iran – depicting a crumbling Statue of Liberty, Mickey Mouse with a smoking gun, the Global Hawk spy drone downed by the Iranians earlier this year, and skulls floating in blood.

Iran Live News | Shahre Kord University 4 November 2009 | 13th Aban Demonstration.
The protests — in Tehran and several other cities — were the oppositions largest street showing in almost two months, and came on the 30th anniversary of the takeover of the United States Embassy in 1979, a day of great symbolic importance for both Iran and the United States. Although a huge deployment of police beat back and scattered many of them, the protesters took heart at their ability to openly challenge the government despite a stream of stark warnings from all levels of Irans conservative establishment.
Protesters openly flouted the days official anti-American message, with about a thousand people, many wearing clothing and accessories in the oppositions signature bright green color, gathering outside the Russian Embassy in Tehran and chanting, The real den of spies is the Russian embassy.

'US intervention in Iran will drag China & Russia into war'
Iran is accusing the EU of waging an economic war. It's in response to Europe considering banning Iranian oil imports in the coming weeks. There's already a verbal standoff over sanctions imposed by the U.S. at the end of last year, aimed at pressing Iran into abandoning its nuclear programme. Tehran threatened to block a key maritime trade route in the Persian Gulf, and later backed off, but is still warning U.S. ships against sailing in the area. Iran will reportedly hold another naval drill next month. But anti-war activist John Rees sees Western worries over Iran's supposed nuclear ambitions, as an excuse to curtail Iranian influence in the region.

Iran fired two missiles at the Ukrainian passenger jet which crashed near Tehran and killed 176 people, it is believed.
Satellite data detected two surface-to-air missiles being launched just minutes after the Boeing 737 took off, the US government says.
It is believed that Iran may have shot the plane down unintentionally, possibly mistaking it for a military jet just hours after Tehran had attacked US bases in Iraq.
Footage which emerged last night showed the Ukrainian International Airlines jet exploding in mid-air after it was hit, killing all 167 passengers and nine crew on board.
Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau and Boris Johnson have all blamed Iran for the downing of the plane as Western governments rejected Tehran's claims of a technical failure.
Iran called the Western claims a 'big lie' and 'psychological warfare' in a fresh burst of angry rhetoric after its relatively inconsequential strikes on US bases had sparked hopes that Middle East tensions were calming.
The crisis forced European planes heading to Iran to turn around in mid-air last night, with all of today's flights to Tehran cancelled by the carriers.
