Ubirr Rock Kakadu National Park Info:
Ubirr is a rock formation within the East Alligator region of Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia and is known for its rock art. It consists of a group of rock outcrops on the edge of the Nadab floodplain where there are several natural shelters that have a collection of Aboriginal rock paintings, some of which are many thousands of years old. The art depicts certain creation ancestors as well as animals from the area such as barramundi, catfish, mullet, goannas, long-necked turtles, pig-nosed turtles, rock ringtail possums, and wallabies.
From the top of Ubirr rock there is a panoramic view of the floodplains and escarpments.
Ubirr is approximately 40 km from Jabiru along a sealed road. The road is low-lying, so access can be restricted during periods of heavy rain. A short walk from the car park takes visitors past the main art sites to the foot of Ubirr Rock.
The rock faces at Ubirr have been continuously painted and repainted since 40,000 BCE. Most paintings there were created about 2000 years ago. Some have been repainted right up to modern times. There are three main galleries of art accessible to visitors. National Park rangers, many of them Indigenous, give talks at all of these sites.

I walk the track up to Nadab Lookout at Ubirr. The views from the Nadab Lookout are just amazing, looking out across the floodplains. Ubirr is approximately 40km from Jabiru along a good road. Ubirr is in the East Alligator region of Kakadu National Park, and is well know for its Aboriginal rock paintings or rock art site.

The similarity between Nadab Lookout and Pride Rock from the Lion King is eerie. In the Lion King, the ancient and massive rock formation look out over the vast Pride Lands. At Ubirr, the Nadab Lookout looks out over the vast Nadab floodplain.
This video is a Ubirr rock time lapse of the sun setting.
Ubirr is a 3 1/2 hour drive from Darwin, out towards Jabiru inside the Kakadu National Park. And it is worth the drive (make sure you check that the roads are open before you leave - especially in the wet season). Wander around and go back in time. See paintings depicting stories about traditional aboriginal foods, law and creation. Some of these paintings are up to 20,000 years old. The place to be though is on top of Nadab Lookout to watch an Ubirr sunset.

Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock are two of the most pristine public sites that feature Aboriginal Cultural Rock Art and previous dwelling shelters. Ubirr is 39 kilometres from Jabiru which is Kakadu National Parks main town, and is not always accessible during the wet season.
The dry season which is approximatley which is classed generally as May - October each year. Though in current year the wet has not set in till late December or January and then finishes mid April.
