The Uchiko-za was built in 1916 to celebrate the accession of Emperor Taishō. Years later it resisted being demolished—for a parking lot!—to become the most popular of Uchiko's attractions today. Tourists can appreciate the wooden structure and its unique theatrical features inside and out. But the building isn't just for show; it also hosts kabuki or bunraku (Japanese puppet theatre) performances, as well as numerous local events.

Uchiko's name became synonymous with high quality white wax production in the late 19th century. At that time, wealthy local merchants built new homes or added to their own, resulting in beautiful streets lined with large, stylish, Meiji Period houses. The Yokaichi district has since been restored to preserve these buildings.
Yokaichi (八日市, Yōkaichi) is comprised of about 90 buildings along a single street. Two of these buildings are open to the public as museums, the largest and most impressive of which is the Kamihaga Residence. A combination ticket for Kamihaga Residence, the Uchiko-za kabuki theater and the Uchiko History Museum is sold for 900 yen from any of those locations.
Uchiko's Old Town is located about one kilometer or a 15 minute walk from JR Uchiko Station. The preserved section of the town is about 600 meters long and consists of about 90 historical houses.

Childrens Taiko Performance in Uchiko, Japan
We trimmed the beginning and end of the video but left everything else
as it happened. Why? Because kids do the greatest things when they're
having fun. This was at the Uchiko Taiko Festival at Uchiko Za in Japan
on August 3, 2014. It's not over when the curtain gets pulled.

Incredible ROADSIDE WAGYU BEEF in Shikoku, Japan
Ehime, Shikoku, Japan - On day 5 & 6 in Shikoku, Japan we started off with a kayak ride down the Shimanto River, stopped for some incredible Wagyu Beef at a roadside diner in Nishi-Tosa, and then visited the old town of Uchiko and Uchiko-za Theatre.
That evening we made another stop along the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage, and then went into the big city of Matsuyama to find the best things to do in Matsuyama - the famous Dogo Onsen and a fun night in our traditional Japanese Ryokan.
On our final day in Shikoku Japan, we rode bikes across the beautiful Kurushima Bridge and then went back to Matsuyama to visit the Matsuyama Castle to wrap up the incredible Shikoku trip!

In July, I spent a week road tripping around the smallest of the 4 major Japanese Islands - Shikoku. I was invited by the Shikoku Tourism Board to visit each of the 4 Shikoku Prefectures and discover everything there is to do in Shikoku.
It was very unique in comparison to my first Travel Deeper Japan trip where I visited the popular Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
Shikoku feels much more remote and a true authentic Japan travel experience - If you ever have the chance, add Shikoku to your list!
