Udayagiri Fort | Kanyakumari | Tamilnadu | Travelers World
The Udayagiri Fort, situated in the Kanyakumari district is one of the major attractions of Tamil Nadu and lies at a distance of 14 km from the town of Nagercoil. The fort covers a huge area of 90 acres which is surrounded by isolated hills. The fort had been originally built in the 17th century but a century later was rebuilt by Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore. At the entry of the Udayagiri Fort lies a stand which has the history of the fort engraved in a granite placard. The fort itself is built of massive granite blocks. Udayagiri Fort was rebuilt during the reign of Marthanda Varma, Venad King, during 1741-44 under the supervision of Eustachius De Lannoy. This fort was basically a place for manufacturing and storing military equipment like cannons and guns. This also doubled up as a jail for war prisoners captured in the campaign against Tipu Sultan under the King Marthandavarma's regime. The tombs of the Dutch Admiral Eustachius De Lannoyand of his wife and son can still be found inside a partly ruined chapel in the fort. Udayagiri Fort was once called Dillanai Kottai De Lennoy's Fort as a tribute to the Dutch Admiral. De Lannoy was buried in the fort and a chapel was then built on the burial site. Inscriptions in both Tamil and Spanish can be found on his tombstone. The fort has now been converted into a biodiversity park and offers a plethora of different kinds of plants and animal species. The place is very well maintained with brick paths guiding you across the Biodiversity Park. You can see beautiful peacocks, swans and even deer’s just wandering around in the park. There is also a small park with slides where children can play for a while. All in all a very the fort offers a very pleasant amalgamation of architecture, history and nature.

Velayudhan Chempakaraman Thampi (1765–1809) was the Dalawa or Prime Minister of the Indian kingdom of Travancore between 1802 and 1809 during the reign of His Highness Maharajah Bala Rama Varma Kulasekhara Perumal. However, it is believed that the Palace was constructed by Vanchi Marthanda Varma of the Travancore dynasty some 500 years ago. Some other sources claim that the palace was originally built during the 9th Century by Cheraman Perumal of the Venad dynasty.
