Castle Iga Ueno-Japan
studioeddydiaz.com
Iga Ueno is most famous for ninja. The Iga school of ninjutsu (art of stealth), based in the former Ueno City, used to be one of Japan's two leading ninja schools during the feudal era (the Koka school in neighboring Shiga Prefecture was the other). Today, Iga Ueno attracts visitors with its fine ninja museum.
Iga Ueno Castle
Iga Ueno castle(伊賀上野城), one of the 100 best castles of Japan, situated on the site of the former Heirakuji temple is a fine example of Japanese realising the tourist potential of the romantic image of Japan's semi-fictitious superman warrior - the ninja
The original castle was built in 1585 by Tsutsui Sadatsugu, four years after Oda Nobunaga had destroyed Iga and pacified the troublesome Samurai of Iga and practically put an end to their mercenary skills. In 1608, on the grounds of bad management, the Tokugawa government confiscated the territory of Iga and posted Todo Takatora (1556-1630) in the castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu, showing respect and appreciation for his connection to Iga and it's spies, instructed Takatora to enlarge the castle and it was planned to be one of the three finest castles in Japan. Extensive work was carried out on the moats and walls. The walls of the main keep are 30 metres high being the tallest of any castle in Japan. The castle tenshu (keep) was to be five-stories with an unhindered view in all directions, but during it's construction a severe storm knocked it down and it wasn't rebuilt.
The current tenshu is a modern reproduction on a grand scale, it is by far the best and most accurate reproduction castle in all of Japan. Constructed entirely from wood and plaster using the exact same methods as castles of the Sengoku period, it stands atop one of the most impressive walls in Japan, commanding a spectacular view over the Iga region.
Inside the castle are a great many historical artefacts including armour, swords, spears, everyday items and equipment from the Sengoku period through to the Meiji period most of which was formerly property of or related to the Iga Samurai.

Iga and Ueno are two neighbouring cities with their histories steeped in some of the most popular Japanese historical figures for foreigners – Ninjas!
They pop up everywhere, and as soon as you board the “Ninja train” you know it’s going to be an interesting destination.
Ueno castle is lovely and definitely worth a look if you’re in the area. Its museum is interesting and the interior and views from the castle itself are beautiful.
The Ninja museum is also pretty good – there is a live show and displays on the more historical aspects of the ninja which brings these characters out of popular culture and into history. The ninja house with its trap doors, passage ways and secret nooks and crannies is also great to see!

Here you can see (vaguely) how a rotating wall in a ninja house works. Though the woman who gave us the tour was a lot stealthier than this dude. I'm sorry for the quality. My camera was being a pain in the hmm.
I'll come up with a proper video next time. ^^;

Japanese Castle & Cherry Blossoms - Japan Trip - Iga-Ueno Castle in Mie pref.
The keep of Iga-Ueno Castle is a relatively new one which was built in 1935. But its stone foundations are original ones.
The feature of this castle is definetely its stone foundation on the west, which is about 30 meters high.
The height of it is said to be the second highest of all stone foundations in Japan after Osaka castle.
In spring, you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms with the elegant keep.
I hope you can feel a nice and balmy spring air of Iga-Ueno castle on this video.
Thank you.
