The Tenjin Festival of Iga Ueno is well known for its parade of demons (oni gyoretsu). Each demon walks in his way, scaring or humouring children and visitors. The ogre parade is said to halt plague and dispel illness and bad luck. In Shinto Theology demons have an ambivalent character. There is no absolute dichotomy between good and evil, and all phenomena manifest rough and gentle characteristics. So evil can be transformed into good. The Noh masks of the parade made in the Edo period are exquisite pieces of art and designated as cultural treasures. The Ueno Tenjin Matsuri dates back to the late 16th century.

Tenjin Matsuri - Yomiyasai
The Tenjin Matsuri is said to be the greatest festival in Osaka with a history stretching over a thousand years. Taking place on the 24th and 25th of July, it has three parts: Yomiyasai, Funatogyo, and Honmiya.
