LIVE: Putin opens Moscow’s biggest mosque
Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to inaugurate Moscow’s biggest mosque on Wednesday, September 23. President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev and President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas are due to attend the ceremony. Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russia’s population and about 300,000 of them live in Moscow. The new mosque, which will be the seventh in Moscow, is expected to help decongest other mosques in the city, which are inundated by the capital’s growing Muslim population.

RUSSIA: EID AL ADHA
Russian/Nat
XFA
Russia's Muslims celebrated one of their most important holy days Monday in an atmosphere of official acceptance, with services attended by leading politicians and broadcast live on state television.
Eid al-Adha, which is known in Russia by the Turkish name of Kurban Bairam, commemorates Abraham's sacrifice of a ram to God instead of his son and centers on the ritual slaughter of a sheep or other animal.
Last year was the first time the holiday received broad attention by Russian leaders.
Russia has about 20 million Muslims, making Islam the nation's second-largest religion after the Russian Orthodox Church.
But Orthodoxy receives far more attention from the politicians and the media than Islam or Judaism.
Some observers say the increased attention to Islam is an attempt to win Muslims' support for the Kremlin's war against rebels in Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region.
The country's chief mufti, or Islamic religious leader, Talgan Tadzhuddin, said at services Monday in the city of Ufa, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of Moscow, that the war is a necessary measure against terrorists, rather than brothers in faith, the Interfax news agency reported.
Thousands of men listened to the service and prayed standing outside the mosque in a snowstorm. Muslim leaders put attendance at 30,000. President Vladimir Putin issued an official greeting to Muslims on the holiday.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Every man should arrive to understanding the Islam on his own accord. The faith is the faith. Before we used to trust the communists now we trust in Allah.

[Wikipedia] Islam in the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union was a state comprising fifteen communist republics which existed from 1922 until its dissolution into a series of separate nation states in 1991. Of these fifteen republics, six had a Muslim majority, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. There was also a large Muslim presence in the Volga-Ural region and most of the population of North Caucasus of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic were Muslims and a large number of Tatar Muslims lived in Siberia and other regions.
The Bolsheviks wanted to include as much as possible of the former Russian Empire within the Soviet Union. This meant they were faced with a number of contradictions as they set out to establish the Soviet Union in regions with strong Islamic influences.
While actively encouraging atheism, Soviet authorities also allowed limited religious activity in all the Muslim republics. Mosques functioned in most large cities of the Central Asian republics and Azerbaijan; however, their number decreased from 25,000 in 1917 to 500 in the 1970s. In 1989, as part of the general relaxation of restrictions on religions, some additional Muslim religious associations were registered, and some of the mosques that had been closed by the government were returned to Muslim communities. The government also announced plans to permit training of limited numbers of Muslim religious leaders in courses of two- and five-year duration in Ufa and Baku, respectively.
In the late 1980s, Islam had the second largest number of believers in the Soviet Union, with between 45 and 50 million people identifying themselves as Muslims. But the Soviet Union had only about 500 working Islamic mosques, a fraction of the mosques in pre-revolutionary Russia, and Soviet law forbade Islamic religious activity outside working mosques and Islamic schools. All working mosques, religious schools, and Islamic publications were supervised by four spiritual directorates established by Soviet authorities to provide governmental control. The Spiritual Directorate for Central Asia and Kazakhstan, the Spiritual Directorate for the European Soviet Union and Siberia, and the Spiritual Directorate for the Northern Caucasus and Dagestan oversaw the religious life of Sunni Muslims. The Spiritual Directorate for Transcaucasia dealt with both Sunni and Shia Muslims. The overwhelming majority of the Muslims were Sunnis; only about 10 percent, most of whom lived in the Azerbaijan, were Shias.

Moscow: Huge number of worshippers come to pray at new mosque | Editor's Pick | 24 Sept 15
Dawn has not yet broken, but thousands of Muslims have made their way to this mosque.
They've come to pray on the first day of Eid al-Adha, or Kurban Bayram as it is known in Russia.
The religious holiday is even more special because the central Moscow mosque was opened only yesterday (Wednesday) in a ceremony attended by the Russian, Turkish and Palestinian presidents.
This is happiness. This mosque is such a beautiful building. Everyone dreams to pray here at least once in a lifetime. So beautiful! Thanks TO those who built it, says Abdurauf Niyazov, a worshipper.
The men move into place for the religious service.
Many have brought their mobile phones to capture the event.
They're addressed by Ravil Gainutdin, Grand Mufti of Russia, who cautions against extremism.
We will never accept those ideological attitudes which make our youth zombies so they choose the way of murderers, he says.
The Grand Mufti congratulates the congregation on Eid.
The mosque is packed.
The building can accommodate 10,000 worshippers, but so many people have come here that some have to pray outside.
An estimated two million Muslims now live in Moscow.
The mosque is very good and big. So many people here today, says Almaz Faizuly, a worshipper.

In Russia, the Muslims are very educated. Muslims know when they should declare a jihad and when they should not. Today, there is no reason whatsoever to declare a jihad. STORYLINE:
Russian Muslims reacted Friday to comments by Russia's Supreme Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin that his organization had declared jihad against the United States and would raise money to buy weapons for fighting America and food for the people of Iraq.
During prayers at the Central Mosque in Moscow, Mufti Ravil Gainutdin, the head of the Council of Russian Muftis, a group that rivals Tadzhuddin's, strongly condemned the call for a jihad.
He said that Tadzhuddin's comments had been a mistake, that they were fueled by political extremism and that Tadzhuddin was only a minor part of Russia's muslim society and therefore his comments were
Many Muslims who gathered at the Central Mosque for their traditional Friday prayers assailed the war but also criticized Tadzhuddin's statement, saying it would only bring harm and exacerbate tension.
Also on Friday, the Russian Prosecutor General's office warned a top Islamic leader Friday that his call for a jihad, or holy war, against the United States violated federal law and said he would be prosecuted if he repeats the offense.
The Prosecutor-General's office said that a regional prosecutor of Ufa warned him Friday that he was breaking a law against inciting ethnic or religious discord.
Mufti Tadzhuddin, who heads the Central Islamic Department of Muslims of Holy Russia, announced the jihad at an anti-war demonstration, drawing cheers from the crowd, on Thursday in the southern city of Ufa, in the Russian Muslim republic of Bashkiria.
He said Russian Muslims had declared their last jihad against Nazi Germany after it invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.
An estimated 20 million of Russia's 145 million population are Muslims.
