6 Great Museums in Florence, Italy
There are so many things to see in Florence Italy. We picked out 6 of our favorite Museums in Florence to share. We did not get the Florence Museum Pass (aka the Firenze Card) because we needed more than 72 hours to visit all of them. In summer it is suggested that you get your Florence museum tickets early or online but in November it just wasn't necessary. Especially if you get there early. The museums of firenze are magnificent. We might suggest getting an Uffizi gallery tour as there is SOOO much to see there and a tour guide would add a lot of value.

The Uffizi Gallery (Italian: Galleria degli Uffizi) is an art museum in Italy. It is located in Florence, and is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world.

Cosimo I de’ Medici, commissioned Vasari to build the administrative offices of Florence in 1560. The “Uffizi,” in Italian means offices. To visit it today is to get a crash course in Italian Renaissance art. So get to the office early.
Vasari wrote that Cimabue trained under Greek painters brought to Florence to revive the art of painting. Duccio, in Siena had masters, whose frescos you can see in The Crypt of The Baptistry there. Giotto, supposedly discovered by Cimabue sketching lambs in a field, revolutionized painting, creating the first true renaissance images as seen in Santa Croce, and most splendidly in The Scrovengi Chapel in Padua.
Now we take a couple of steps back. Giotto would not be improved upon for at least 100 years, until Masaccio painted The Brancacci Chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine. The artists shown here up until Veneziano and Filippo Lippi mostly reverted back to The International Gothic Style, with their gold leafing and flat halos.
Fra Filippo Lippi was a wild monk. He was a womanizer who stole away with a nun from The Carmine Convent. She gave him a son who also became an artist: Filippino Lippi.
Uccello was a master of foreshortening. Vasari said he should have spent more time on figures and animals rather than the problems of perspective. Taking away the horses’ ass from him would be akin to talking away the female breast from Renoir.
Botticelli’s figure of Venus was said to based upon The Medici Venus. Here Venus celebrates spring. The Nymph Clovis is transmogrified into The Goddess Flora, at the behest of Zephyr. This couple can also be seen flying in The Birth of Venus. Does Venus look pregnant to you?
We come upon my favorite Annunciation in art. The Cestello Annunciation appears to me more graceful than anything painted before or since. Those splendid hands may have been inspired by Leonardo’s Annunciation from about ten years before.
In Calumny, from the left: The Naked Truth, Repentance, Perfidy, over the victim being pulled by the hair by Calumny. Fraud, arranges Calumny's hair. Rancor attempts to obscure the view of the donkey eared King Midas, who is being counseled by Ignorance and Suspicion, presaging The Trump Cabinet.
This was the first major Northern European work brought to Florence. Commissioned by the Italian banker, Tommaso Portinari, who lived in Bruges, it was admired by all Italian artists who saw it.
With Botticelli, Ghirlandaio reached the pinnacle of the Florentine Linear Style, which would only be superseded by Leonardo, Raphael, and Ghirlandaio’s student: Michelangelo.
Perugino also reached this pinnacle. The poor boy made his fame and fortune in Florence, retiring back to his hometown of Perugia, where he became the teacher of Raphael.
Painted for Michelangelo’s friend Agnolo Doni to commemorate his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi, Christ is being presented in the painting like a gift, which Vasari links to the painting’s patron due to a perceived pun on the Italian word for gift, donare, and the patron’s name, Doni (meaning, in Italian, 'gifts').
Behind the walled off garden, representing virginity, stands The Baptist and nudes, probably symbolizing Europe's pagan ancestors, sitting and reclining on another wall. Doni was charged 70 Ducats and when he sent only 40 back to Michelangelo, the master then demanded 140, which Doni promptly paid.
Bronzino helped usher in Mannerism, which rebelled against the realism and perspective of The Renaissance. Notice the elongated figures, especially the hands.
Perhaps based on the Dresden Venus, by Giorgione, Titian's nude was nakedly ambitious. It was imitated by all manner of artists up to Manet’s Olympia which even included the dog, a symbol of fidelity.
Caravaggio exploited the use of chiaroscuro, contrasting light and shadow that was so influential, it created a movement named for the artist: Caravaggisti.
At first Raphael copied his teacher, Perugino. After discovering Leonardo and Michelangelo he remade himself in his own image. He did not emulate Leonardo’s sfumato (smokiness), gradations of shade, or Michelangelo’s bold nudes, but became his own man, the most beloved painter of The Renaissance.
Verrocchio allowed his student Leonardo to paint one of his angels. The look of envy of the other angel must have been no less than Verrocchio’s own, who supposedly gave up “colors” immediately thereafter.
His Adoration of The Magi drew crowds unseen before in Florence and though unfinished, was the most influential painting of its day or any other. It ushered in The High Renaissance.
In his first finished painting, Leonardo has given his angel the means to take wing. It is also one of the first, if not the first use of atmospheric perspective in art history.

The Uffizi is one of the first modern museums. The gallery had been open to visitors by request since the sixteenth century, and in 1765 it was officially opened to the public, formally becoming a museum in 1865.[3]
Today, the Uffizi is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Florence and one of the most visited art museums in the world.”

The Uffizi Gallery, next to the Palazzo Vecchio, was designed by Giorgio Vasari for the Medici rulers of Florence in the 1500s, as a private art gallery and offices (uffizi) and became a public gallery in the 1700s. The gallery contains significant works by Gentile da Fabriano, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio.
The Galleria del Accademia houses Michelangelo's David (1504), moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873.
The Bargello is a former army fort and prison which now houses Michelangelo's Bacchus (1497).
The Medici Chapel at the Basilica of San Lorenzo contains the tombs of the Medici family, patrons, was partly designed by Michelangelo and houses several of his works, including a Madonna and Child, and the Tomb of Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici with the sculpture Dusk and Dawn.
Casa Buonarroti is a house owned by Michelangelo that contains his earliest works, including Madonna of the Steps (1491), made when he was 17, and Battle of the Centaurs (1492), made when he was 18.
The Basilica di Santa Croce houses the Tomb of Michelangelo, esigned by Giorgio Vasari, as well as the Tomb of Galileo Galilei.
