Money Washing Shrine in Kamakura, Japan
Ritual washing of money in sacred spring at Zeniarai Benten Shrine in Kamkura, Japan. The shrine dates back to the 12th century. It was not until 1257, however, that the unique coin-washing practice started. Tokiyori Hojo (1227-1263), then the Fifth Regent, visited the Shrine one day and washed his coins with spring water, saying that coins washed here might be doubled. Hearing this, people began to wash their coins, and since then coin-washing practice has been honored by many people in the hope that they would get rich.

This popular shrine is dedicated to Benten, goddess of music, eloquence, and the arts. She is one of the 7 lucky gods. Hidden in a small niche in the cliffs of Kamakura I reached this shrine by bending and crawling through a tunnel then a series of torii gates. This shrine is famous for washing of money which is believed to double your wealth if this is true and happens I will finally be above the poverty line ;)

Zeniarai Benten Shrine, Kamakura
This is a panaramic shot of one of the shrines within the hybrid buddhist/shinto Zeniarai complex. The dogs are guardians.
In the stream there were many koi. The stream itself is holy and has a mythical origin. Supposedly Minamoto Yoritomo (the first Shogun during the kamakura period) had a dream where he saw a god who told him to find a holy spring behind a mountain. Sure enough, there it was. They built a shrine around it. The stream is used to wash money for good luck and wealth.

Zeniarai Benten
Zeniarai Benten Shrine (銭洗弁天) is a popular shrine in western Kamakura, which people visit to wash their money (zeniarai means coin washing). It is said that money washed in the shrine's spring, will double.
Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura government, ordered the shrine's construction after a god appeared in his dream and recommended him to build the shrine in order to bring peace to the country. Because the dream occurred on the day of the snake, in the month of the snake of the year of the snake, the shrine was later also dedicated to Benten, a Buddhist goddess associated with snakes.
Zeniarai Benten Shrine is a nice surviving example of the fusion of Buddhism and Shinto. Many other shrines were stripped of their Buddhist connections when the Meiji government attempted to emancipate and separate Shinto from Buddhism.

HOW TO MAKE MORE MONEY THE JAPANESE WAY!! Zeni Arai Benten: Washing our money
Zeniarai Benten Shrine is a famous shrine in Kamakura where you wash your money for good luck and the hopes that your money will double. The leader of the Kamakura Goverment, Minamoto no Yoritomo ordered it built after he had a crazy dream and a god appeared to him telling him to dedicate a shrine there to bring peace to the country. Another cool thing about Zeniarai is that it's one of the few remaining examples of the mixture between Shinto and Buddhism.
