PEARL OF AFRICA : UGANDA WILDLIFE EDUCATION CENTRE
The UWEC Executive director James Musinguzi hopes to make more innovations to have the zoo compete with other world class zoos.
Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC)
Uganda wildlife education center was established in 1952 as the Uganda zoo also known as Entebbe Zoo, and the primary purpose of the zoo was to accommodate the injured, sick, orphaned and rescued animals from poachers and other phenomena. It is located at the shores of Lake Victoria, which is the largest fresh water lake in Africa. In the early 1960s, it was converted to the traditional zoo.
Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) Trust was founded in 1994 to convert the traditional system of zoo from bring an attraction center to use it for Conservation Education purpose.
It surprisingly houses a wide range of wild animals (around 400), plants (around 500), and verities of bird(around 250), many reptiles, various butterflies and other indigenous animals which makes it an attractive venue for imparting education as well as providing a pleasing experience for those who loves wildlife.

The Uganda Wildlife Education Center
This short film highlights the conservation work of the Uganda Wildlife Education Center in Entebbe Uganda. The center not only serves the country's species as a rescue, rehabilitation and breeding center, but also works within the community to help educate locals about environmental and wildlife conservation issues. The center is also a top destination for tourist visiting the country and looking to have unique wildlife experiences- like getting to interact with orphaned chimpanzees and meet endangered white rhinos! From exclusive VIP behind-the-scenes tours and getting to be a Keeper for a Day, to long stay volunteer opportunities, proceeds from the UWEC's programs help bring in much needed financial support for the non-government funded, self-sustaining center- which in turn allows its dedicated staff to continue safeguarding Africa's wildlife and their habitats.

Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre in Entebbe, Uganda
The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre was established in 1952 by the colonial government as a reception centre for wild animals that were found as causalities. Under the jurisdiction of the Game Department, an animal orphanage was created in 1956, to hand raise the orphaned animals received through the Game department. In 1962, a National zoo was created.
On May 5, 1994 Uganda Wildlife Education Centre was born and has since grown to be one of the most respected conservation education institutions in Africa and beyond, for successfully carrying out it’s mandates to educate Ugandans on the importance of conserving the country’s biodiversity,to rescue and rehabilitate injured, orphaned and/or confiscated wildlife and to breed endangered wildlife species in captivity with an aim of re-introducing them back in the wild.
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre lies on 70 acres in Entebbe, a 10 minutes drive from the International Airport. The centre has three ecosystems; Savannah, Forest and Wetland. UWEC is the coordinating zoo for the zoos in East, Central and West Africa as mandated by Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
Some of the memorable activities at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre include; The Behind the scenes tour. Visitors are able to observe the animals at close sight as the animal keepers feed them, carry out health checks. Animals such as Rhinos, Giraffes, Lions, Chimpanzees are popular on the menu. Visitors get the chance to take part in the food preparation, visit the pharmacy among others.
Some visitors opt to be Keepers for a day. Here they are able to serve Rhinos and lions breakfast. They wake up early from either the dormitory or bandas and head to the kitchen to prepare the food, then jump onto the tractor from one animal station to another feeding a variety of exotic and endangered animals and birds. This experience is granted upon getting a vaccination from the health team at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.
The centre has numerous Conservation education, internship and volunteer programs on and off site for both Ugandans and foreigners.

Behind the Scenes at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre
UWEC is not a zoo in a conventional sense and neither is it a Safari Park but it is a center where wildlife education is combined with leisure. Our main aim is to model the main ecosystem of this country in open range exhibits to accommodate confiscated and injured wildlife and to look after orphan animals

A Day At Entebbe Zoo In Uganda
Entebbe Zoo (Uganda Wildlife Education Centre). I would put this on your the list of things to do in Uganda. Besides the zoo, Entebbe has some nice beaches. I would recommend you stay there a day or 2 when entering or leaving Uganda.
