Our Scenic journey sets sail in Moscow and now lands us in one of Russia's oldest towns Uglich.
Leaving the business of Moscow behind Scenic give you the chance to come and have a look at some of the smaller towns here in Russia.
Where tradition is strong the people are absolutely lovely and if you pay with cash there's some cracker deals.
Yep these are the not-so-secret locations that let you save some money and give you a chance to get to know the locals.
David: “and you love all the tourist boats coming in and all the tourists from around the world coming to visit you?”
Tatiana: “I love all the tourists you see and just we even just happy when we see foreigners and when I hear the words oh I have got what I was looking for you see that is the best”
David: “this is the place to shop”
Uglich is a pretty town, with a pretty dark history this was where the son of the first Russian Tsar was murdered and as you can imagine started a pretty serious uproar, the Church of St Dmitry is his legacy.
They were such hard times back then that even the bell was punished for being rung at the time of his death and it was exiled to Siberia for three centuries.. well I guess it won't do that again.
Just a stone’s throw up the Volga River is the world heritage-listed Yaroslavl; an open-air Museum of Russia's colourful past.
The history that surrounds some of these places you get to visit is absolutely incredible, I mean Yaroslavl has just celebrated its 1000th birthday.
The art frescoes in the Elijah cathedral are some of the best preserved in Russia and get this it's only ever been washed once but somehow it's kept its magic, possibly a bit of divine intervention?
This little town is named after Yaroslavl the wise now he's very educated man that's a given but what he was really smart at is that he married his three daughters of to the French the Norwegian and the Hungarian Kings. Now that is how you make some pretty serious allies..
Allies to protect you and your town for centuries.
While we're cruising between ports Scenic give you the chance to try some of the more traditional crafts like matryoshka dolls and these are meant to be our masterpiece, Billy yours is looking alright
Are you happy with that?
I would be concerned I’m the only woman in this
Not woman
I'll tell you now the matryoshka doll competition is not for the faint-hearted.. too much?
The Scenic Tsar is your home away from home while you’re here in Russia and this boat was specifically designed for this kind of cruising.
This technology you and I wouldn't even understand its luxuriously appointed for the more sophisticated among us.
And your private deck is well.. private.
This is one of the newest vessels in Russia so expect the bes, comfort is everything and you can even check in on the captain to make sure it's smooth sailing all the way to St. Petersburg.

House on the Embankment, palace for Stalinist nobility
Many buildings in Moscow stand near the Moskva River, but only one is known as the House on the Embankment -- one of the city's most famous apartment blocks, where happiness and fear lived side by side.
Russian Art - 4 Architecture: Late Muscovite Period
Fourth video about the Russian Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
Russian culture is an hybrid generated from habits of many civilizations that shaped this great multicultural state, and it is the result of its development for several centuries, being deeply rooted in the culture of the first eastern slavs.
The Late Muscovite Period goes from 1630 to 1712. After the Period of Troubles, the church and state were in bankrupt, and they couldn't pay more constructions.
The rich merchants of Yaroslavl financed many cathedrals in XVII century, with many bulbous domes and tended roof.
Elijah the Prophet, Yaroslavl: the first churches were asymmetric, like this. It follows the tradition of Middle Muscovite Period. The interior has frescoes of byzantine influence. They were commissioned by Ulita Makarova in 1680, and were painted by a team of 15 people leaded by Guriy Nikitin and Sila Savin. They represent scenes of the life of Elijah and also normal life scenes.
St. John Chrysostom, Korovniki: it follows the aesthetic of the previous one but greater. The bulbous domes are very big compared with the own building.
St. John the Baptist, Yaroslavl: it is the best of all these churches, and the most beautiful. It has fifteen domes. The belltower was built later, in mid-1690. The interior has more than five hundred frescoes about christian saints, St. John the Baptist and biblical themes. They were painted by Dmitri Pleyanov and Fiodor Ignatiev in 1694-1695.
The churches of Moscow of XVII century are very well decorated, but they are more little.
Ascension of Uglich: I'm not even sure if the image I put is of this church to be honest...
Hodegetria, Vyazma: one of the most beautiful buildings. It has three tended roofs, similar to candles. It is called so by Virgin Theotokos Hodegetria, the Virgin that guides saying that the Child is the path to salvation.
Nativity, Putinki: many tended roofs, following the aesthetic of the one of Vyazma.
The Patriarch Nikon said that tended roof constructions were not byzantine-typical, and so he declared them anti-canonical. The tended roofs were forbidden.
Voskresensky Monastery: this is the residence of Nikon. It is also called New Jerusalem Monastery or Resurrection cathedral. Byzantine forms are recuperated.
When the tended roofs were forbidden, the muscovite architects used bracket arches, called kokoshniki.
Kazan cathedral, Moscow: do not confuse with the one in St. Petersburg. It is in the Red Square. It is a reconstruction, because Stalin destroyed it in 1936.
Holy Trinity, Nikitniki
St. Nicholas, Khamovniki
Trinity, Ostankino
Great Cross, Kitai-gorod: this one was destroyed by Stalin and was lost.
Russian architecture became purely decorative, influenced by ukrainian and polish baroque. The first russian baroque churches were little chapels built in zones of family Naryshkin, near Moscow, so the name of Naryshkin baroque is frequently used in this style. Some of these churches are similar to towers, with cubic or ortogonal floors.
Protection of the Theotokos, Fili: composition similar to a stair, with belltower.
Ascension, Pokrovka: it seems more like a jewelry work than a building.
The Stroganov patronized many baroque buildings.
Nativity, Nizhny
At beginning XVIII century it is interesting to name the wooden churches in the north of Russia.
Intercession, Vytegra: it has 24 domes.
Kizhi Pogost: the legend says that the carpenter Nestor only used one axe, that when the building was done, he threw it into the lake Onega while he said there wasn't and won't be other church like this. The most important building of this complex is the Transfiguration church, with 22 domes. Near it is the Intercession church, with 9 domes. The amazing thing of these constructions is that they were built without any nail.
As an add...
Palace of Aleksei Mikhailovich: the artistic reconstruction of interiors was based in historical sources and authentic prototypes.

Russian Art - 2 Architecture: Early Muscovite Period
Second video about the Russian Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
Russian culture is an hybrid generated from habits of many civilizations that shaped this great multicultural state, and it is the result of its development for several centuries, being deeply rooted in the culture of the first eastern slavs.
The Early Muscovite Period goes from 1230 to 1540. The mongols plundered so much the country that even the capital cities couldn't build with stone due to its price till half of the century, except Novgorod and Pskov.
Novgorod
Church of Transfiguration: it is a memorial for Ilya Muromets, that saved the city, and it is in Ilyna street. It has frecoes of byzantine master Theophanes the Greek.
Pskov churches exported its characteristics to Muscovy.
In XIV century the churches in Muscovy are stone fortified churches.
Ascension cathedral of Zvenigorod: built of white stone, with dome. Proportions and harmony. The interior has frescoes of painter Andrei Rubliov.
Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius: it is a fortress. Between 1608 and 1610, 3000 defenders resisted for 16 months against 15000 polishmen. In XIV-XVII centuries it was an important cultural center. Books were written, copied and saved, and worked makers. Due to its history and merits, in XVIII it got the title of Lavra, that means superior monastery.
Sava-Storozhevski monastery: it is near river Moscova, founded by Savva, disciple of St. Sergius Radonezh. Use of white and red color.
At the end of XV century, Muscovy was very powerful. Ivan III the Great invited italian masters from Florence and Venice and they built similar old constructions from Vladimir with italian Renaissance decoration: the cathedrals of Moscow Kremlin.
Dormition cathedral: also called Ascension cathedral, directed by italian architect Aristoteles Fiorovanti from Bologne, that studied the art of Pskov, Novgorod and Vladimir to learn the forms. Here the tsars were enthronized, among other important acts.
Archangel cathedral: nice mix of russian art and italian renaissance art, directed by italian architect Alevisio the New from Venice. This cathedral was the sepulchre of princes and tsars till Peter the Great.
Annunciation cathedral: built by russian alarifes. After a fire in times of Ivan the Terrible it was rebuilt. It was added a porsche called Porsche of Ivan the Terrible, because as he married 4 times, after the 3rd you cannot enter a church.
These cathedrals were imitated in Russia over XVI century.
Novodevichy Monastery: founded by Vasili III, father of Ivan the Terrible, it is a fortress. In its interior is the cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk, from Middle Muscovite Period.
Other constructions
Fortifications of the Kremlin of Moscow: the original wall was built in 1156, and the actual with towers was built in XV century. The tower that appear in the third image is Spasskaya.
Ivan III the Great Belltower: in the center of the Moscow Kremlin is this belltower, unifying all the styles of the place.
Palace of Facets: it is also in the Moscow Kremlin, and it was the feast hall of the tsars.

Russian River Cruise Travel Video - Volga River cRUISE
UPDATE 2015: Shot a few years ago, this video by Don Dulmadge is still a superb way to give you an upfront view of culture, georgeous scenery and excitement you can expect from our Russian Cruises! While we may change vessels - the sights and stunning beauty remain the same!
Check out all the details on our website:
Russia is the largest country in the world, home to 150 million people and spanning 11 time zones. Over a thousand years of culture, history, intrigue, and mystery. Ornate palaces, giant squares, magical fountains, the first man in space, world-renowned literature, art, and music. Since 1991, when Perestroika opened Russia to the world, millions of visitors have poured into Moscow to marvel at the Red Square, the unique onion domes of Saint Basil's Cathedral, and the vast Kremlin grounds adorned with giant bells and cannons. Millions have come to St. Petersburg to view the incomparable wealth of the Hermitage Museum, the grandeur of Pavlovsk and Catherine Palaces, and the magic of Peterhof Fountains, where water is propelled by ingenious design and gravity, not by modern pumps or technology. But Russia is not just Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia is also Goritza, a typical riverside peasant village, where you can break bread with an authentic local family. Russia's Uglich, Yaroslavl, and Kizhi, but most all of all, Russia is its people, old and young alike, who will impress you with their hospitality, humor, and generous spirit, their curiosity, intelligence, and their Slavic duše, or soul.
The ship, refurbished in 2006, holds a maximum of 240 passengers, along with 100 crew members. Her cabins are clean and comfortable, featuring all lower berths, private bathrooms with showers, refrigerators, air conditioning and opening windows. Aboard all our ships, meals are served in our spacious panorama restaurants and night bars, and are complimented with a number of additional feasts and surprises. Blini and caviar tasting, tea parties, and vodka and champagne galore. After a full day of sightseeing, you can rest and relax in one of our elegant lounges, where a talented team of classical musicians, folklore dancers, and our live dance band will entertain you until the wee hours of the morning.
After another day of sightseeing, the time will come to bid St. Petersburg goodbye, as you set sail on your Volga adventure. Enjoy our welcome cocktails and dinner, and then party away as our on-board entertainers enthrall you with their playing, singing, and dancing. Your first stop downstream will be at the delightful green station of Mondraga, where a typical 19th-century Russian village has been recreated. Here, you will see artisans at work and be able to purchase their creations. You will also have a chance to see the unique Vodka Museum, featuring over 2,500 versions of Russia's national drink. Then it's time to enjoy an authentic riverside barbecue with shashlik, wine, and special entertainment.
Kizhi Island, one of the 1,650 island dotting the immense Lake Onega, is reminiscent of a fairy tale. The structures found on the island are authentic examples of traditional Russian wooden architecture from the turn of the century. The most spectacular is the Church of Transfiguration, whose 22 cupolas were constructed by Master Nestor without the use of a single nail. Back on board, it's time to take in one of our many cultural and entertainment activities. Enjoy a lecture on Russian history or Russian arts and souvenirs. Then, sit back and enjoy an on-board concert performed by our fabulous folklore ensemble.
In the typical riverside village of Goritza, you will visit an authentic peasant house, where you will be welcomed and served delicious homemade food. The day will end with another treat, our on-board caviar and champagne party. Founded in 1010 by Prince Yaroslavl the Wise, Yaroslavl is one of Russia's oldest cities. During the Middle Ages, it was a main training center and one of three Golden Ring Cities. Today, the Church of Elijah the Prophet boasts of some of the oldest original icons, dating back as far as the 13th century. It is also home to one of the most renowned a cappella choirs in all of Russia.
The town of Uglich is closely linked to the darker side of Russian history. It is here that the 10-year-old crown Prince Dmitri, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered, which brought Boris Godunov to the throne and turmoil to the country. The day will end with a classic concert, preformed by two of Russia's most renowned classical musicians, who will fill the evening with romance and raw emotion. As you continue sailing towards Moscow, the evening is reserved for our Captain's Gala Dinner, featuring vodka, champagne, and entertainment. Then it's time for some silly fun and laughter at our talent show, where both passengers and staff get to strut their stuff.

A walk around Tver, the coziest spot between Moscow & St. Petersburg
Tver is located halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg, which makes this cozy provincial town a popular destination for weekend trips.
This small town, which traces its history back to 1135, offers a rich sightseeing program that includes medieval churches and late 18th-century palaces, as well as wooden houses with unique carved exteriors.
Central Tver resembles St. Petersburg, since the architectural ensembles were designed by famous Russian and Italian architects of the 18th century, who worked in Russia's northern capital at that time. The town's once splendid palaces and estates were designed by Carlo Rossi, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Vasily Stasov and other leading figures.
Tver is situated on the banks of the Volga river − a strategic location that made it a major trade center in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, cruise boats take travelers from Tver to various destinations, including Uglich, Kostroma and Kazan, which lies over 600 miles away.

Борис Годунов. Избранный царствовать. Boris Godunov. Chosen to rule
