Our Scenic journey sets sail in Moscow and now lands us in one of Russia's oldest towns Uglich.
Leaving the business of Moscow behind Scenic give you the chance to come and have a look at some of the smaller towns here in Russia.
Where tradition is strong the people are absolutely lovely and if you pay with cash there's some cracker deals.
Yep these are the not-so-secret locations that let you save some money and give you a chance to get to know the locals.
David: “and you love all the tourist boats coming in and all the tourists from around the world coming to visit you?”
Tatiana: “I love all the tourists you see and just we even just happy when we see foreigners and when I hear the words oh I have got what I was looking for you see that is the best”
David: “this is the place to shop”
Uglich is a pretty town, with a pretty dark history this was where the son of the first Russian Tsar was murdered and as you can imagine started a pretty serious uproar, the Church of St Dmitry is his legacy.
They were such hard times back then that even the bell was punished for being rung at the time of his death and it was exiled to Siberia for three centuries.. well I guess it won't do that again.
Just a stone’s throw up the Volga River is the world heritage-listed Yaroslavl; an open-air Museum of Russia's colourful past.
The history that surrounds some of these places you get to visit is absolutely incredible, I mean Yaroslavl has just celebrated its 1000th birthday.
The art frescoes in the Elijah cathedral are some of the best preserved in Russia and get this it's only ever been washed once but somehow it's kept its magic, possibly a bit of divine intervention?
This little town is named after Yaroslavl the wise now he's very educated man that's a given but what he was really smart at is that he married his three daughters of to the French the Norwegian and the Hungarian Kings. Now that is how you make some pretty serious allies..
Allies to protect you and your town for centuries.
While we're cruising between ports Scenic give you the chance to try some of the more traditional crafts like matryoshka dolls and these are meant to be our masterpiece, Billy yours is looking alright
Are you happy with that?
I would be concerned I’m the only woman in this
Not woman
I'll tell you now the matryoshka doll competition is not for the faint-hearted.. too much?
The Scenic Tsar is your home away from home while you’re here in Russia and this boat was specifically designed for this kind of cruising.
This technology you and I wouldn't even understand its luxuriously appointed for the more sophisticated among us.
And your private deck is well.. private.
This is one of the newest vessels in Russia so expect the bes, comfort is everything and you can even check in on the captain to make sure it's smooth sailing all the way to St. Petersburg.

For many Australians I'm sure that Russia doesn't immediately jump into your top five countries to visit, so over this week with a bit of help from my friends at Scenic Tours I am going to scour this land and show you why the old USSR is starting to turn heads.
We're kicking off our Russian journey in the capital of Moscow the former Soviet state has opened its doors to the world and tourism has stepped on in.
Being the largest country on Earth is a bit of a drawcard of course.
The Russians have had their fair share of conflicts and when they’re victorious they do like to show off a little and build enormous monuments.
Scattered throughout Moscow are some pretty impressive tributes and Scenic make sure you take in all the iconic sites including the infamous Red Square.
Red Square is quite a popular places isn’t it?
Guide: “yes it is visited by lots of tourists locals just love it they come here to celebrate new year, well that is the heart of the city of Moscow. It was known as Trade Square in the 15th century because here we have the market and from the 17th century gorgeous present claim red square which meant beautiful”
The square proudly boasts one of Moscow’s most famous sites Saint Basil's Cathedral. Built to outshine any church of its time it stands as a testament to Ivan the terrible and it definitely gets its fair share of photos.
But there's something that you need to know about this place, see when Ivan the Terrible unfortunate name apparently a lovely guy came up with the concept of this magnificent structure behind me he was so impressed with the finished product that he called the architects in
and ask them if there was any way they could replicate what they had done?
Of course they said yes so to stop them Mr. Terrible had them blinded. Ah the sheer joys of working in the 16th century
In a city that’s home to more than 12 million people you can expect the traffic to be a little hectic and I can tell you right now that Moscow sometimes comes to a complete standstill so if you want the smart way to check out all the highlights you got to take to the water ways.
Many of the city's highlights are dotted along the canals and the cruise gives you just enough time to get ready for the Moscow Metro.
Some Scenic adventurers, nine million locals and close to 10,000 trains a day, this is serious business.
One of Moscow's must-sees is also the office of the Russian president welcome to the Kremlin.
Russia has been a superpower for centuries and when you get here you start to get the feeling that they're slowly opening up their secrets to the rest of the world.
I mean who thought that you would ever have the chance to stand here in the center square of the Kremlin.
But this is the new Russia and we have Scenic on our side, these walls once housed the most important secrets of one of the most influential countries in the world.
Well when in Russia.

We're continuing our Scenic European river cruise as a floating hotel, the Scenic Jade, makes her way up the stunning Rhine River.
Today we're jumping ship and exploring one of the richest cities in the world, Luxembourg.
With its location in the centre of Europe nearly every major international company has a headquarters here in one way or another; apparently there are some pretty good tax breaks.
But business aside it also plays an important role as one of the founding members of the United Nations .
The city's Old Town delivers the real heart and history of Luxembourg.
This fortification back in the 15th century was actually the most important part of the city and they had built it so well and positioned it beautifully on top of the river here, that no one even came close to invading for over 400 years.
But the secret to their defence was actually inside these walls.
Over two thousand men and horses defended the city from this labyrinth of tunnels and whole communities was set up to support
the troops; imagine the shock for attackers as the valley wall erupted with gunfire.
But they did have quite an asset to protect and these days Luxembourg is a colourful, energetic and stylish outfit; that revels in the finer things in life.
Of course while you're here you have to try one of the local specialties and this right here is the pate Riesling.
Thank you very much Maria.
Now this is ground up pork and veal marinated in Riesling and served in beautiful pastry.
It is beautiful. Can I take this? Thank you!
As you're cruising these waterways and taking in all the history it can be information overload, so I found you a solution.
All right I thought I better introduce you to your new best friend while you're here in Europe; It's called the tailor made device and Scenic have packed it full of information about Europe including a GPS tracker, so it tells you where you are and what you're looking at.
It’s like your own cute little tour guide.
On top of just making your experience that much better it's also good to have your facts straight for when you start boasting to all your friends.
The quaint little town of Cochem is the gem of the Moselle River
and it’s home to one of the most picturesque castles in Germany.
The original structure built in the 12th century has been upgraded over the years; mostly by a wealthy businessman who bought the castle for just 500 Euros, then embarked on a ten year restoration.
It really sums up though what a holiday here with Scenic is all about. Beauty, extravagance and just incredible scenery.

Duga Radar Station - Russian Woodpecker
Duga (Russian: Дуга) was a Soviet over-the-horizon (OTH) radar system used as part of the Soviet anti-ballistic missile early-warning network. The system operated from July 1976 to December 1989. Two operational Duga radars were deployed, one near Chernobyl and Chernihiv in the Ukrainian SSR (present-day Ukraine), the other in eastern Siberia.
The Duga systems were extremely powerful, over 10 MW in some cases, and broadcast in the shortwave radio bands. They appeared without warning, sounding like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise at 10 Hz,[1] which led to it being nicknamed by shortwave listeners the Russian Woodpecker. The random frequency hops disrupted legitimate broadcasts, amateur radio operations, oceanic commercial aviation communications, utility transmissions, and resulted in thousands of complaints by many countries worldwide. The signal became such a nuisance that some receivers such as amateur radios and televisions actually began including 'Woodpecker Blankers' in their circuit designs in an effort to filter out the interference.
The unclaimed signal was a source for much speculation, giving rise to theories such as Soviet mind control and weather control experiments. However, because of its distinctive transmission pattern, many experts and amateur radio hobbyists quickly realized it to be an over-the-horizon radar system. NATO military intelligence had already given it the reporting name STEEL WORK or STEEL YARD. While the amateur radio community was well aware of the system, this theory was not publicly confirmed until after the fall of the Soviet Union.
