Uhuru Gardens is a large memorial Park in Nairobi on Langata Road, about 7 kms away from Central Business District (heart of city) towards Nairobi National Park. It was here on these grounds where Kenya's independence from British rule was announced by Kenya's first president, President Jomo Kenyatta on 12 December 1963 in a befitting ceremony. The British flag was lowered down and Kenya’s flag was raised here on that day. Hence statue of four soldiers can be seen here raising flag of Kenya near the towering monument. There are two significant monuments in the Uhuru Gardens. The first and most important is 24-metre high monument depicting Kenya’s struggle for independence. The second is a fountain constructed in 1983 marking the 20th anniversary of Kenya’s independence. Hundreds of Kenyans and foreign tourists visit this Garden daily to see these two monuments. Entry to the Garden is free but car parking fee is 200 shillings and camera fee is 5000 shillings which is too much in line of Kenyan tradition. Photography is prohibited in this Garden without paying a handsome amount. Uhuru Garden is not very beautiful as compared with Uhuru Park located in city center. It cannot be termed as a must-see activity.

Kenya @50 : Uhuru Gardens, Where Kenyan Flag Was First Raised
The word 'Uhuru', Swahili for freedom, is common in Kenyan rhetoric. It is a name that signifies the independence of East Africa's biggest economy. Uhuru gardens is the birth place of independent Kenya and is the largest memorial park in the country. It is here that the first Kenyan flag was raised in after the union jack was lowered for the last time in 1963, marking the very first year of independence. Our reporter relives the history of Uhuru gardens, as Kenya prepares to mark 50 years of independence.

Nairobi City Park
Established in 1921 on an area of 225 acres, City Park Nairobi is situated in the Parklands area of Nairobi across Nairobi River in the north of city, about 4 km from city center. The land grabbers encroached upon big chunk of land over the years. Finally Government declared the remaining 150 acres of Nairobi City Park a protected area in 2009. It is a beautiful park having rich biodiversity with nearly one thousand species of flora and fauna. On weekends and national holidays the park becomes very lively where hundreds of families come for picnic and bring lot of food to share with monkeys lurking around. There are lot of nature trails for nature lovers, but usually these are not considered safe for foreign tourists. Entry to the Park is free.
There is a small graveyard in the park where famous persons of Nairobi are buried. Another landmark ‘Murumbi Peace Memorial Park’ is located just adjacent to the public cemetery where Joseph Murumbi, Kenya’s second vice President and his wife Sheila were buried. The couple had great love for Kenyan art and culture which inspired the creation of the Murumbi Memorial Park.
Another highlight of the City Park is the City Park Market of vegetables and fruits located in one corner of the Park near Lumuru Road. This is a typical vegetable market of a third world country, not well organized, very cheap and lively. It is also a cultural place. The South Asian people and Sikhs with their colorful turbans are seen in abundance here.

Kenya Counts Down To 50 Years Of Independence
The clock is at this hour ticking towards midnight, the moment when Kenya will mark 50 years since it joined the community of nations that make up the free world. Celebrations have already kicked off in earnest at the historic Uhuru gardens memorial park in Nairobi, but it has not been an easy ride, as Kenyans prepared for this magnificent ceremony. Our reporter takes a look at the final preparations, which preceded tonight's grand party.

Petty offenders say they’ve reformed as they walk to freedom
The Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH) has launched a peace initiative geared towards promoting peaceful existence among different ethnic communities in Kenya.
The initiative which was launched at the historic Uhuru Gardens Memorial Park is a joint partnership between TICAH and the National Museums of Kenya.
The launch bringing together people from over 18 ethnic backgrounds saw the unveiling of a symbolic ground dabbed “Mahali pa Umoja” which organisers say will be open to people from all walks of life.
Speaking during the launch on Friday, Kenya National Museums’ Director of Sites and Monuments Dr Purity Kiula urged Kenyans to embrace positive cultural practices in a bid to promote cohesion and unity.
“As Kenyans our heritage is the same, our origins are the same, so we are the same people,” said Kiula. She further said that the Kenya National Museums will explore partnerships with other agencies as well to push the peace agenda forward.

The gardens were officially declared a National Monument in 1966 as it was Kenya’s birthplace. This is where the first Kenyan flag was raised and thus marking the very first year of independence on 12th December 1963. The corner of the park holds a Mugumo tree that was symbolically planted by Kenya’s First President Jomo Kenyatta on the spot where the Union Jack (British Flag) was brought down and Kenya’s national flag was first hoisted. The park shares values in sustainable design as the site harbored a diversity of native flora and fauna of savanna woodland which have been protected and retained within. The Nairobi National Park has now been physically separated from Uhuru Gardens with electrified fencing and the introduction of the Northern By-pass which aids in the preservation of wildlife in the National Park.In addition to the historical significance, Uhuru Gardens continues to attract various events as a recreational park. It is popular as a rest area for families and friends and a hot spot for school field trips. Due to its proximity to the CBD and Lang’ata residential zones, as well as occupying large open grounds landscaped with planters, concrete seats and public toilets, it has gained popularity as an events venue for corporate launches, concerts, weddings and appears in many films and music videos. It could be termed a success in terms of urban planning and continues to be relevant in contemporary times.

Uhuru Park is a beautiful recreational Park in the heart of Nairobi city, stretched on land measuring 32 acres (13 hectares). There are many national monuments, constructions, sculptures and wonderful structures besides a Children Park as well as a beautiful artificial lake with curved and foot bridges joining the lily pond and an artificial island. The Park was opened to the general public by the first President of Kenya, Mr. Jomo Kenyatta on 23 May 1969. Because of its central location, the park attracts hundreds of local and foreign tourists daily. Particularly the Park becomes a lively and cultural place on weekends and national holidays when thousands of people throng to this park for picnic and recreation. There are hundreds of shady trees with overall cool atmosphere which provides a good escape from hustle and bustle of neighboring central business district.
The entry to the Park is free which is a rare thing in Nairobi. On occasions the grounds of the Uhuru Park are used for assembly by religious and political groups. There are two significant memorials in this Park; one is ‘Love, Peace and Unity Memorial’ and the other is ‘Memorial to the Victims of Torture and Ill-Treatment’.

First lady Margaret Kenyatta launches initiative to help the disabled in Kakamega
First lady Margret Kenyatta yesterday launched the help me walk project in Kitale, which aims at creating an enabling environment for people living with disability.
Speaking during the function, health cabinet secretary Dr. Cleopa Mailu vowed to ensure that people living with disability, as well as the elderly access NHIF services both in public and private hospitals.

Located about 1.5 km from city center alongside Kipande Road is National Museum of Nairobi set in an imposing building surrounded with interesting sculptures, shady trees of Botanical Gardens and so called Snake Farm on the northern bank of Nairobi River. If you walk along Nairobi River, just for a stroll towards west, you will first reach John Michuki Memorial Park, then Snake Park and then Botanical Gardens and then National Museum.
The museum was initiated in 1910 by some interested naturalists during British rule and formally established at the present site in 1930 under the colonial government. Initially it was named Coryndon Museum after Robert Coryndon, former Governor of Kenya. After independence in 1963, its name was changed to National Museum. The Museum remained closed from Oct.2005 to June 2008 for refurbishing, expansion and modernization.
It displays Kenya’s history, culture, art and natural heritage in various halls. The exhibits include more than 1000 stuffed birds and mammals, fossils from Lake Turkana, ethnic displays from various Kenyan tribal groups, and exhibits of local art. The upper story has halls depicting Kenyan and East African history as well as cultural heritage of various tribes of Kenya. It is one of the best museums in Africa. Entry fee to the Museum is 1500 Shillings (15$) which includes entry fee to the adjacent Snake Park, a most ordinary show of few snakes, tortoise and crocodiles.
