Chernobyl Museum Kiev (Ukrainian National Chornobyl Museum)
00:20 Chernobyl photos
01:08 Museum
The museum exposes some interesting objects related to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It however did not teach me anything that I have not known before. There are only very few description, and most of them are not translated to English. Entrance is very affordable at 10 UAH = (0.4 USD). I recommend a visit if you are around anyways and have around 30 minutes to spare.
On the other hand, I highly recommend doing a day-tour to Chernobyl, priced at around 100 USD. I participated in a guided tour back in February 2016 and have to admit that it was one of the most exciting places I have ever been to.

Welcome to Kiev, Ukraine: Desyatinnaya Church & Ukrainian History Museum, Kiev, Ukraine
Entomologist, beekeeper, biologist, scientist Dr Viktor Fursov is talking about Desyatinnaya Church (=The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin ), which is located near National Museum of History of Ukraine, and close to Andreevsky Descent in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.
The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin (Ukrainian: Десятинна Церква, Desiatynna Tserkva; Russian: Десятинная Церковь, Desyatinnaya Tserkov') was the first stone church in Kiev. Originally it was built by the order of Grand PrinceVladimir (Volodymyr) the Great between 989 and 996.
Christianity was accepted by Kievan Rus' Princess Olga, the ruler of Kiev, who was baptized, taking the Christian name Helen, in 955 (or 957). Her grandson, Grand Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich or Volodymyr the Great (960-1015) was a Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and ruler of Kievan Rus' State from 980 to 1015.
Grand Prince Volodymyr is known as Russian ruler who christened (baptized) Russian people in the state Kievan Rus'.
The legend says that until the age of 28 he was a great raver and a pagan, who persecuted Christians, murdered his brother Yaropolk and seduced his wife. But early Slavic chronicle, called Tale of Bygone Years, says that Prince Volodymyr chose Christianity, or Byzantine Christian Orthodoxy, between Judaism, Islamism and Roman Catholicism, and he was christened and advanced Russian Orthodox Church within the state named Kievan Rus'. He had got more than 13 children.
Prince Vladimir was baptized at Chersonesos in 988, taking the Christian name of Basil. Returning to Kiev, he desroyed pagan monuments and established many churches, starting with a church dedicated to St. Basil, and the Church of the Tithes (989).
Prince Volodymyr and Princess Olga were venerated as the Equal-to-apostles Saints by the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Revolution in Ukraine: Dispatch from the Presidential Palace
Subscribe to VICE News here:
As protesters in central Kiev took over the parliament building on Saturday, others headed to President Yanukovych's highly controversial private estate of Mezyhrhrya, just outside the city.
The estate, half the size of Monaco, cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build, much of it coming from embezzlement and corruption, and had long been in the protesters' sights. The average monthly salary for an Ukrainian citizen is around 200 Euros, so their President's opulent lifestyle was a constant slap in the face that could no longer be ignored.
VICE News went along with thousands of curious Ukrainians to take a look and walk around Yanukovych's house, like a kleptocrat's version of Cribs.

City of Kiev, Ukraine - Unravel Travel TV
Kiev is the capital city of Ukraine, its largest economical, political, educational and cultural center. Kiev offers endless opportunities for tourism. Traveling to this city may be one of the most pleasurable experiences in your life. Ukrainians' very lifestyle will be as interesting to foreign visitors as the capital's major attractions and museums.
Kiev's most famous historical architecture complexes are the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), which are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Noteworthy historical architectural landmarks also include the Mariyinsky Palace (designed and constructed from 1745 to 1752, then reconstructed in 1870), several Orthodox churches such as St. Michael's Cathedral, St. Andrew's, St. Vladimir's, the reconstructed Golden Gate and others.
One of Kiev's widely recognized modern landmarks is the highly visible giant Mother Motherland statue made of titanium standing at the Museum of the Great Patriotic War on the Right bank of the Dnieper River. Other notable sites is the cylindrical Salut hotel, located across from Glory Square and the eternal flame at the World War Two memorial Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the House with Chimaeras.
Among Kiev's best-known monuments are Mikhail Mikeshin's statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky astride his horse located near St. Sophia Cathedral, the venerated Vladimir the Great (St. Vladimir), the baptizer of Rus', overlooking the river above Podil, the monument to Kyi, Schek and Khoryv and Lybid, the legendary founders of the city located at the Dnieper embankment. On Independence Square in the city centre, two monuments elevate two of the city protectors; the historic protector of Kiev Michael Archangel atop a reconstruction of one of the old city's gates and a modern invention, the goddess-protector Berehynia atop a tall column.
Kiev is known as a green city with two botanical gardens and numerous large and small parks. The World War II Museum is located here, which offers both indoor and outdoor displays of military history and equipment surrounded by verdant hills overlooking the Dnieper river. The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky on St Sofia's Square.
Among the numerous islands, Venetsianskyi (or Hidropark) is the most developed. It is accessible by metro or by car, and includes an amusement park, swimming beaches, boat rentals, and night clubs. The Victory Park (Park Peremohy) located near Darnytsia subway station is a popular destination for strollers, joggers, and cyclists. Boating, fishing, and water sports are popular pastimes in Kiev. The area lakes and rivers freeze over in the winter and ice fishermen are a frequent sight, as are children with their ice skates. However, the peak of summer draws out a greater mass of people to the shores for swimming and sunbathing.
The centre of Kiev (Independence Square and Khreschatyk Street) becomes a large outdoor party place at night during summer months, with thousands of people having a good time in nearby restaurants, clubs and outdoor cafes. The central streets are closed for auto traffic on weekends and holidays. Andriyivskyy Descent is one of the best known historic streets and a major tourist attraction in Kiev.
Local public transportation in Kiev includes the Metro (underground), buses and minibuses, trolleybuses, trams, taxi and funicular. There is also an intra-city ring railway service.

The Viking age lasted roughly 300 years. From the first recorded raid on an English monastery on Lindisfarne in 793 A.D. to 1066, when Norway's greatest King Harald III (aged 50!) died in berzerkergang (fighting bare-chested without armor and shield with an axe in each hand) from an arrow to his skull in an attempt to conquer England. A few months later another Viking, today known as William the Conquerer (actually related to Harald III) succeeded in taking England.
The Vikings raided and fought all over Europe. Often in the service of Norwegian Kings or as mercenaries for other European rulers. The Roman Emperor had his own Viking army known as the Varangian guard in Constantinople.
It was whilst being the leader of the Varangian guard that Harald Hardråde (later called Harald III of Norway and founder of Oslo) eventually amassed such wealth that he was able to successfully court the 2nd oldest daughter of one of contemporary Europe's most powerful rulers: Yaroslav The Wise. They married and returned to Norway where they founded what is today the capital of Norway, Oslo.
So who was this last Viking Queen of Norway? That's the story I investigate whilst exploring Kiev, the city she grew up in, before ascending to the Norwegian throne.
Enjoy my movies? I ALSO RUN A PODCAST:
For more Viking history I highly recommend watching History channel's TV show; 'Vikings'. It's actually quite accurate in terms of the historical events they depict. Ragnar Lothbrok was indeed a Norwegian Viking King and Lagertha was a female warrior ruler. The woman who plays Lagertha in the TV show is actually a Canadian but with Ukrainian ancestry;
Here's a link to more info about the greatest Viking series ever made:
For more tangible Viking history if you for some reason find yourself in Norway's capital Oslo, a visit to see one of the few surviving Viking ships is a must. It's located at what's known as Vikingskipshuset on an island called Bygdoy. More information in English here:

Khreshchatyk Street:
Khreshchatyk is the main street of Kiev, Ukraine. The street has a length of 1.2 km. It stretches from the European Square (northeast) through the Maidan and to Bessarabska Square (southwest) where the Besarabsky Market is located. Along the street are located buildings of the Kiev City Administration which contains both the city's council and the state administration, the Main Post Office, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Committee of Television and Radio Broadcasting, the Central Department Store (TsUM), the Besarabka Market, the Ukrainian House, and others. The entire street was completely destroyed during World War II by the retreating Red Army troops and rebuilt in the neo-classical style of post-war Stalinist architecture. Among prominent buildings that did not survive were the Kiev City Duma, the Kiev Stock Exchange, Hotel Natsional, the Ginzburg House. The street has been significantly renovated during the modern period of Ukraine's independence. Today, the street is still significant to administrative and business city organizations, as well as a popular tourist attraction.
As of 2010, Khreshchatyk is included in the Top 20 of most expensive shopping streets in Europe.
Khreshchatyk is a popular attraction for tourists. During weekends and public holidays, the street is closed to road traffic and reserved for pedestrians.
Khreshchatyk contains many up-market stores, cafés, and restaurants.

Kiev Monastery of the Caves:
Kiev Pechersk Lavra or Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery which gave its name to one of the city districts where it is located in Kiev.Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1051 the Lavra has been a preeminent center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery complex is considered a separate national historic-cultural preserve (sanctuary), the national status to which was granted on 13 March 1996. The Lavra is not only located in another part of the city, but is part of a different national sanctuary than Saint Sophia Cathedral. While being a cultural attraction, the monastery is currently active. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on 21 August 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community.
Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kiev-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve,[9] and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Metropolitan Onuphrius.
The Great Lavra Belltower is one of the most notable features of the Kiev skyline and among the main attractions of the Lavra. 96.5 meters in height, it was the tallest free-standing belltower at the time of its construction in 1731–1745, and was designed by the architect Johann Gottfried Schädel. It is a Classical style construction and consists of tiers, surmounted by a gilded dome.
Caves:
The Kiev Pechersk Lavra caverns are a very complex system of narrow underground corridors (about 1-1½ metres wide and 2-2½ metres high), along with numerous living quarters and underground chapels. In 1051, the monk Anthony had settled in an old cave in one of the hills surrounding the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. This cave apparently grew, with numerous additions including corridors and a church, and is now what we know as the Far Caves. In 1057, Anthony moved to a cave near the Upper Lavra, now called the Near Caves.
Foreign travellers in the 16th–17th centuries had written that the catacombs of the Lavra stretched for hundreds of kilometres, reaching as far as Moscow and Novgorod,[10] which had apparently brought about to the knowledge of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra around the world.Wikipedia
