Three Seasons at St Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church 1897 2017
The grounds of St Michael's Orthodox Church is one of my most favourite places to visit. Without having to go much more than an hour away from home, a visit here takes me worlds away and always leaves me feeling renewed and refreshed.
The past year we've taken several trips outside Winnipeg get aerial videos of St Michael's Orthodox Church and other Ukrainian churches. This video compilation was made to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the church which was initiated in 1897. The completed church was consecrated on 14 October 1899 and is the first permanent Ukrainian church erected in Canada. Since then, numerous Ukrainian churches were built in Canada and remain as places of worship which strengthen the bonds of our families, communities, and Canada's national fabric. As the children of the original Ukrainian settlers dispersed throughout Canada to take on greater roles and responsibilities as trusted and loyal Canadian citizens, like the towering grain elevators that once dominated and defined the Prairie Provinces, many of these churches have since disappeared back into the land. Those surviving churches such as St Michael's, remain as testimony to the strength, courage, and vision of all those newcomers, who came here for a better life and helped set the foundations to make our nation what is is today.
We hope that by November there will be another video to compliment this one as we have yet to film St Michael's when the leaves are changing colour during the autumn months.
If you enjoyed watching it, do share it for no other reason than your pleasure and that of others. But give me the credit due me.
The future rises out of what went before. Every generation stands upon the shoulders of those who have gone before, and every generation becomes the shoulders upon which others will stand, and one day we will find that there were giants among us too.

Kryvyi Rih
Kryvyi Rih or Krivoi Rog is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine; it is the 8th most populous city in the country. It lies within a large urban area, administratively, incorporated with Kryvyi Rih Municipality as a city of region significance. It also serves as the administrative center of the district although it is not part of it. The city extends for 126 km from north to south.
Standing on the Saksahan and Inhulets river, Kryvyi Rih has been a major settlement for most of its history, going back to its founding as a postal city in 1775 by the Cossaks. A military settlement until 1860, it was part of Kherson, although it was incorporated during the 20th century with areas of Yekaterinoslav. The township began to expand at an astonishing rate at the beginning of the 1880s. Kryvyi Rih's urbanization was unplanned; French and English investment was brought on by a boom in metallurgy, iron mining and investigation of rich deposits of iron ore. The building of the Yekateryninska Railway in 1884 built for transportation of ore to Donbas transformed Kryvyi Rih into a major industry town that culminated in city status in 1919. Nationalization and investment spurred by soviet authorities led to extensive growth. In 1934 Kryvorizhstal was built, the first of more than 500 factories. The city also gave rise to the foundation of Kryvyi Rih National University. Financially, the city's growth after the nazi occupation increased due to economic reforms. Also, investment spurred by Ukrainian Independence, market economy and the 2014 revolution led to extensive regeneration, particularly in the city centre.
