Thirukovilur temples
Tirukoilur or Tirukkoyilur also called Thirukkovalur or Kovalur. is a town panchayt in villupuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As the name says koil (means temple in Tamil language) it is famous for the temples. It is also spelled as Thirukkovilur or Thirukkoiloor situated on the banks of koil. The Veerataneshwara Shiva temple at East Thirukoilur and Ulagalantha Perumal temple, at west Tirukoyilur are located in this town.

Greatness Of Temple:
A demon, Somukhan by name, stole the Vedas to conquer Devas and hid them somewhere. Devas appealed to Lord Vishnu for the recovery of the Vedas. Lord killed the demon, recovered the Vedas and taught them to Lord Brahmma in this shrine. A king, Sruthakeerthi by name, following the advice of Rishi Naradha, worshipped Perumal here for child boon. He was blessed with four children. It is generally said that this shrine is not mentioned by Azhwars in their Mangalasasanam hymns. Yet, according to researchers, the verse beginning with the line “Voruvadal” and in other ten verses beginning with the line “Ezhai Edhalan” by Tirumangai Azhwar contains the Mangalasasanam respect, quoting epigraphic details. Sri Vedanta Desikan’s Nipasa Thilakam also has a mention about the temple.
Temple History:
Chandra-Moon due to the curse of his wives lost his luster and began to fade. As advised by Maharshi Naradha, he came to this place, worshipped Perumal and got his curse removed. He bathed in the Theertha in southeast of this temple and performed penance. Hence this spring is named Chandra Pushkarini. Later Devas appealed to Perumal that He should make this place His abode. Responding to their prayers, Perumal called the divine sculptor Viswakarma and ordered him to make an idol. Viswakarma made a Big Idol in a reclining form and installed here. Perumal fulfilled the prayer of the Devas and is gracing devotes from this temple.

ஏரிகாத்த ராமர் கோயில் (Eri-Katha Ramar Temple), சென்னை – திண்டிவனம் நெடுஞ்சாலையில், காஞ்சிபுரம் மாவட்டத்தில், மதுராந்தகம் பேருந்து நிலையத்தின் அருகில் அமைந்துள்ளது. ராமபிரான் சீதையை மீட்க இலங்கை செல்லும் போது விபண்டக முனிவரின் ஆசிரமத்தில் சில நாட்கள் தங்கியிருந்தார். முனிவரின் வேண்டுதல்படி, அயோத்தி திரும்பும்போது சீதையுடன் கல்யாண கோலத்தில் காட்சி தந்தார். விபண்டக முனிவர் கோயில் கருவறையிலேயே உள்ளார். சுவாமி சன்னதிக்கு வலப்புறம் ஜனகவல்லித் தாயார் சன்னதி உள்ளது. திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் மற்றும் இராமனுஜர் இக்கோயில் தலத்திற்கு தொடர்புடையவர்கள்.
பிரித்தானிய இந்தியப் பேரரசு காலத்தில், மதுராந்தகம் பகுதியில் அடை மழை பெய்து வெள்ளம் சூழ்ந்தது. மதுராந்தகம் ஏரி உடைந்து விடும் சூழ்நிலை வந்தது. மக்கள் அங்குள்ள கோயிலில் குடிகொண்ட கோதண்டராமரிடம் வேண்ட, மதுராந்தகம் ஏரி மழை வெள்ளத்திலிருந்து காக்கப்பட்டதாகவும் அது முதல் அக்கோயிலுக்கு ஏரி காத்த ராமர் கோயில் என்று பெயராயிற்று என்பது மரபு வரலாறு.
The temple was built during the Pallava era, and is estimated to be 1600 years old. The Moolavar (presiding deity) of the temple is Lord Rama, thus making this one of the oldest temples of lord Rama in South India. The temple has inscriptions indicating generous gifts from Chola king Parantaka I. The place was once famous during the rule of Cholas who ruled this place as Maduranthaga Chaturvedi Mangalam after the Chola ruler Madurantaga Uttama Chola (973 -85 CE). It is believed that Gandaraditya donated the village to the Vedics (Chaturvedi - one who knows all four vedas) of the place and hence it came to be known as Chaturvedi Mangalam.
The presiding deity of the temple is Rama with his consort Sita and his brother Lakshmana. The images are made of stucco as is the case in some of the temples like Ulagalantha Perumal Temple, Kanchipuram. The Moolavar is in a standing position facing east and is around 8 feet (2 m) tall.
There are different shrines around the sanctum and one of them is that of Sita who is worshipped as Janakavalli

Veerateeswarar Temple (also called Thirukoilur Veerattam) in Tirukoilur, a panchayat town in Villupuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is believed to have been built during the Cholas period in the 10th century. Shiva is worshipped as Veerateeswarar and his consort Parvathi as Periyanayagi.
The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple has two three-tiered Rajagopurams, the gateway tower, one each for the Veerateeswarar and Periyanagi shrines.
The temple is open from 6 am - 12 pm and 4-8:30 pm on all days except during new moon days when it is open the full day. Six daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the Masimaham festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Maasi (February - March), Karthigai Somavaram during the Tamil month of Karthigai (October - November) and Manickavasagar festival during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December - January) being the most prominent festivals. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
As per Hindu legend, Shiva appeared in the form of Andakasuramurthy to slay the demon king Andakasura.
Andakasura was a demon who attained powers close to immortality on account of his severe penance to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. The boon attained had just one condition that when he lusts his mother, he would be killed. He made undue use of his powers and was troubling humans and celestial deities. During one such encounters, he started lusting toward Parvathi, the wife of Shiva and who was like his mother. Shiva appeared as Andakasuramurthy and slayed Andaka with his trident. Realising his mistake, he pleaded Shiva to make him a devotee of his in the next birth. It is believed that Shiva readily agreed and Andaka was born as Gana Bhringi.

Veerateeswarar temple is located in Thirukoilur, a town panchayat located on the banks of Then Pennai river, located 40 km (25 mi) from Villupuram. The temple has two parallel structures, each of which has a three-tiered Rajagopuram, the gateway tower. The temple has large granite rectangular walls that houses all the shrines. The sanctum sanctorum houses the image of Veerateeswarar in the form of Lingam, an iconic form of Shiva. There is an Ardha Mandapa and a Mukha mandapa, pillared halls leading to the sanctum. The first precinct has the shrines of Vinayakar, Murugan, Durga, Dakshinamurthy and Chandikeswara. The first precinct also houses metal image of Nataraja, Somaskanda and Andakasura. The second structure houses the image of Periyanayagi. Like the Shiva temple, here also the sanctum is approached through an Ardha Mandapa and Mukha mandapa. There is a precinct around the sanctum.
