TORPEDO BOATS IN THE PHILIPPINES ARE THE BEST! (You Won't Believe This)
This could be one of the BEST activities you can try in the Philippines!
They call them Torpedo Boats and once you see them in action, you will understand why! The locals along the Ulot River in Paranas Samar would transport themselves using this unique canoe style boats with motors. A few years ago one of my friends actually went and helped turn their local way of transport into an amazing tourism activity...
YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS!!!
A MUST TRY!!!!

Ulot River Torpedo Boat Adventure in Paranas, Samar, Philippines ????????????
This time last year, we went to the Ulot River (Ulot is the waray dialect for monkey), which is the longest river in Samar spanning 90km. The headwater starts at San Jose de Buan in Western Samar, passing downstream through Paranas and finally Can Avid in Eastern Samar. The jump-off point for the Ulot River Torpedo Extreme Boat Adventure is at Samar Island Natural Park (SINP) headquarters at Sitio Camp Uno in Brgy. Tenani, Paranas. TORPEDO is derived from Tenani Boat Operators for River Protection and Environmental Development Organization. We had a totally awesome experience. The boat handlers are so cool and helpful. Our boat trip lasted about three and a half hours, two hours there and back and an hour or more at the water falls, swimming and a fun brief picnic. Travelling through unspoilt, protected forests, the Ulot river is a joy to behold. Torpedo is a ballistic missile that explodes on impact but in Samar, torpedo is not a lethal bomb. It means a thundering boat adventure. And it is an incredible ride at that. Unlike other river rides, this one uses long and narrow wooden canoes raging through 90 kilometers of wild stream. Modern thrill-seeking travelers know it as torpedo for its furious speed. But for the locals, it is called the good old “baluto” (boat) that is still used to transport people and goods. The concept of torpedo boat adventure is the same as white water rafting as. Only that in torpedo you don’t need to paddle because an engine propels it. Also, it uses a wooden canoe instead of rubber rafts. It also does not use flotation bags but rather pure Pinoy ingenuity, hardcore skills and lifelong affair with Ulot River. The tour jumps off at Sitio Camp Uno in Barangay Tenani. It takes you down to 8 kilometers of mixed-class rapids. The cruise begins easy & smooth passing through light ripples framed by forested communities. But don’t let the stillness fool you because a wild world further down is looming ahead. Passing through rocks & ledges, the scene begins to turn rough as medium quick water rocks your torpedo sideways. Then at the most unsuspecting moments, prepare to swerve by in surprise. This rage goes on until you reach Dini’s Point. Be prepared to hold tight as you slice through intense rapids all coming to you at once. And don’t close your eyes because you will miss the thrill! Watch out for that one spot where your boatman skillfully squeezes the torpedo through a narrow rock passage. Couldn’t take a video of all the tricky ones since I have to keep my phone safe or I might drop it in the river, I brought my gopro but apparently wasn’t able to charge it???? Aside from the thrilling boat adventure, I also thoroughly enjoyed (and was terrified initially) with rapids jumping. The adrenaline stakes are surely up at this spot. It is not high but the narrow assemblage of boulders & the madness of the torrent create the groaning feel in your stomach! And you will feel safe though the water is deep (they said if you drop something, you won’t be able to find it, yes that deep)since the tour guides are there for you and you will also be wearing safety jackets all through out. This is a must-experience adventure with your family and friend. Don’t forget to tip your kind and hardworking boatman/tour guide☺️
Good friends, beautiful scenery and lots of laughs, this was surely a wonderful day and I can’t wait to go back there with my kids and husband for them to experience it as well????????????????

TORPEDO, an acronym for Tour guides and boat Operators for River Protection and Environmental Development Organization, offers an extreme boat ride that traverses the scenic portion of Samar Island’s arterial river. The ride covers roughly 10.5 kilometer of the 90-kilometer long Ulot River. The boat is motorized, making it fast—cutting the water like a torpedo—where it got its name.
rom either Cebu or Manila, you can either take a flight to Calbayog or Tacloban.
Cokaliong Shipping Lines travels to Calbayog from Cebu at 7:00PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and then arrives at around 8:00AM the following day.
Sea Cat, on the other hand, has daily trips to Calbayog from Cebu. The fast craft leaves Cebu at 2:00PM, and then arrives in Calbayog at 07:00PM of the same day.
From Calbayog, hop on a van to Tacloban, and then alight at Buray junction (Petron Gas Station). You can also take any public transport to Catbalogan, and then transfer to a bus or van bound for Tacloban.
If you are arriving via Tacloban, take a van to Catbalogan, and then alight at Buray Junction.
From Buray junction, you can wait for a bus to Taft or Borongan, and then alight in front of the TORPEDO office in Sitio Campo Uno, Barangay Tenani, Paranas. Since the bus is not that frequent, you can alternately hire a tricycle at the junction. The tricycle fare is ₱50/way. If you are a bigger group, you can also rent it for ₱500 for the two-way trip.
Thrilling Torpedo Boat Ride on Ulot River in Samar, Philippines | Ride N' Seek Philippines S4
The twin provinces of Samar and Leyte are no stranger to tragedy. It was here that the strongest storm in recent history, Typhoon Haiyan, hit in 2013. But, as Jaime finds out, the Samar and Leyte islands are a land of survivors. She starts her journey along the river of Ulot, where the locals have been carving out timber to turn into torpedo boats—the only vehicle able to cruise the tricky, boulder-ridden waterways.

Ulot River is one of the major rivers in the province of Samar in the Philippines. Historically, this river served as the main highway of the province when roads did not exist yet. Although some remote towns still use this river to transport people and goods.
Today, it's a tourist destination. Torpedo Extreme Boating is the main activity in the river. The white water rapids of the river serve as main attraction for the thrilling boat ride.
Guests can also experience jumping in the rapids with the safety of life vests and through guidance from locals.
The river is also flanked by virgin forests on both sides. Thus the banks are lined with old and tall trees. Beautiful wildlife also thrive in the area such as kingfishers and serpent eagles.

SPARK SAMAR | ULOT RIVER TORPEDO EXTREME BOAT RIDE
ULOT RIVER is home to the TORPEDO BOAT EXTREME RIDE. The boat used in this activity is a long, motorized canoe resembling a torpedo. The unique design of the torpedo has been proven to be most suitable in navigating through the rough currents of the river. Barreling through the 10.5-kilometer scenic stretch of the river takes an hour from Sitio Campo Uno to the destination called Deni’s Point. Once here, travelers can swim in the cool waters and picnic on the massive boulders that line the river. For the more daring, a leap into the gushing waters is a must try.
But like all other tourism destinations in the country, they won’t get noticed unless promoted. It is in this premise that Samar Provincial Government thru the Provincial Tourism Office celebrate World Tourism Day & National Tourism Week 2019 with the launching of SPARK SAMAR VLOG COMPETITION wherein homegrown community-based tourism-oriented vloggers feature tourist destinations of the province.
JAMES ARVIN VLOG/CARL ANTHONY VLOG features the diverse beauty of the ULOT RIVER TORPEDO BOAT EXTREME RIDE found in the Municipality of Paranas, Samar. An adventure from the very eyes of the people who live within the communities they call home – A PROUD SAMARNON!
