Best Beaches of Maui: Ulua Beach Park in Wailea
This beach is awesome. It's close to the Andaz Maui at Wailea and just beside Mokapu Beach. The water here is really clear. I swam out about 50 feet and watched the sunset. It was a memorable moment after spending the day touring around Maui.
The waves are mellow, and people were just laying out in the sun. A fantastic Hawaiian Beach beside one of Maui's best resorts.
We love exploring Hawaii and all the beaches, hotels, restaurants, and activities. Hawaii has so many family friendly beaches and resorts - we try to see them all!! Come to our website and explore Hawaii with us. Visit

Today dive at Ulua Beach, Maui. Some white-tipped reef sharks under a ledge at the first reef. Quite a few nudibranchs a green sea turtle and even a gigantic moray eel out on the prowl.
Ulua Beach Dive - Maui
Wailea, Maui has several public beach access sites that divers can enjoy if you don't mind a small walk lugging your tanks. This site is literally 100 yards of the shore of Ulua Beach. I also dove this site at night and was joined by a couple of small sharks but didn't see any on this dive. I had a visit from a 3 ft Green that had lost its rear flippers and ran into a snowflake eel. A good beach dive, please enjoy.

Snorkeling at Ulua Beach, Maui, Hawaii
On the Hawaiian Island of Maui, the town of Kihei offers a wide range of rental condominiums, shops and restaurants. For visitors who enjoy shallow water snorkeling, Kihei provides access to many popular underwater sites. Daily, dive boats from the Mā‛alaea Harbor and the Kihei Small Boat Harbor make early morning offshore trips to the partially-sunken crater of Molokini. For shoreline dives, Ahihi Bay and Ahihi Cove in the Ahihi Kinau Area Natural reserve are sites noted for abundant fish, but rocks and pebbles make for a difficult water entry. For a pain-free entry from a sandy beach, the Ulua Beach diving site is extremely popular with both snorkelers and beginner-level scuba divers. This beach is in the Wailea Resort area, with a large public parking lot (best to arrive before 9 a.m., though) showers, and rest rooms. As with all Kihei-area dive sites, the morning hours provide the calmest and clearest water conditions ---- in the afternoon, clouds tend to arrive from the Haleakula volcano area, and brisk Trade Winds create waves.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
I shot the JPEGs and video clips in this YouTube video using a CANON PowerShot ELPH 100HS point-and-shoot digital camera in an inexpensive, waterproof DiCAPac WP-ONE “plastic pouch” (from Amazon.com).
This pouch uses a heavy-duty zip-lock seal, rolled up tightly and held in place with Velcro. The porthole is coated glass, and the soft vinyl body is flexible enough for operation of camera buttons. (I added a desiccant capsule from a bottle of over-the-counter pills). I also set the CANON camera for wide-angle operation (underwater, this setting is effectively normal angle), and used the Program mode set as Underwater ----- this boosts red to counteract the overall blueness of underwater scenes (just remember to reset to a normal auto mode for dry-land pictures!).
Underwater, I found that viewing the camera's LCD screen was a lot easier than squinting through a viewfinder. Having 8 GB of camera memory, of course, left me free to take lots of images, and even lots of 1280x720 HD movie clips. Overall, with clear seawater and bright sunshine, the camera/camera pouch combination produced amazingly realistic underwater digital images.
Attack of the Humu (Ulua Beach, Wailea, Maui)
I was snorkeling at Ulua Beach in Wailea, Maui when this little guy came swimming up to me. At first I thought he was being friendly but then I noticed he had fire in his eyes and did not like me being on his reef. If I swam a few feet away, he would go back to the bottom and chase other fish but if I swam back then he immediately went into attack mode and would circle around me. He even rammed himself into my fins a couple of times. All the other Humu's I saw here and at other beaches totally ignored me but this Humu had a real hate on for me.
