Best Tour on Ulva Island - Ulva's Guided Walks
Ulva Island is a predator free bird sanctuary off Stewart Island in the deep south of New Zealand.
Ulva's Guided Walks was established by Ulva Goodwillie in 2000, fulfilling a need for visitors to have a guide show them around Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary.
Ulva Goodwillie was named after Ulva Island and is a direct descendant of the first Maori peoples of Stewart Island. She and her team of local guides are passionate and knowledgeable about this special place. Join them for a unique experience, learning about native flora and fauna, from a Maori and local Stewart Island perspective.
Ulva's Guided Walks offer a range of bird watching and botanical experiences for you to enjoy, from a half day amble to a full day (or two days!) serious bird watching.

-- About this video --
Today is our last day in Stewart Island, New Zealand, so we are going to show you one more awesome things to do in Stewart Island: the Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary. Ulva Island is a pest free island meaning that the New Zealand bird species can thrive there! It’s one of the best places to see New Zealand birds.
It’s a 5-minute journey on the Ulva Island Ferry to get to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is connected with a network of walking tracks to explore the island. The best way is to take it slow to see more birds.
Ulva Island is home to a great deal and abundance of species: Kiwi birds, tui, kaka, kakariki/parakeet, oyster catchers, wood pigeon, yellowhead, weka and so much more! We spend most time with the weka and weka chicks but we see all of these birds except for a kiwi bird! You’re best chances are to arrive early morning to see a kiwi bird.
For one of the best places to see wildlife in New Zealand, we couldn’t recommend Ulva Island more as it’s the best example of bird sanctuary in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary? Would you add Ulva Island to your NZ bucket list? LUK in the comments.

-- About this video --
Today we are going to Stewart Island! The most popular way to get to Stewart Island is to take the ferry between Bluff and Oban. We hop on the ferry in Bluff with Real Journeys and start making our merry way over the Foveaux Strait to Oban, the one and only town in Stewart Island.
When we arrive, we check into the Stewart Island Backpackers then start exploring Oban. After getting some lunch and meeting some locals, we find a walking track along the coast of Oban, over some cliffs to a nice secluded beach called Bathing Beach. Bathing Beach is a beautiful golden sand beach. Although we are as far south as we’re ever likely to get, the beaches in Oban look like a tropical paradise.
We make our way back into Oban town and catch a movie and the one and only cinema on Stewart Island, the Bunkhouse Theatre. It’s a cosy boutique-style cinema showing one movie called A Local’s Tail giving the Stewart Island history from the perspective of a dog. It’s pretty hilarious and sums up Stewart Island life and humour nicely.
So what do you think of Oban, Stewart Island? Is it a New Zealand town worth visiting? LUK in the comments.

Stewart Island & Ulva Island New Zealand
Stewart Island/Rakiura is the third-largest island of New Zealand. It lies 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of South Island. Its permanent population is slightly fewer than 400 people. Rakiura is the more commonly known and used Māori name. It is usually translated as Glowing Skies, possibly a reference to the sunsets for which it is famous or for the Aurora Australis, the southern lights that are a phenomenon of southern latitudes. Ulva Island is a small island about 3.5 km long lying within Paterson Inlet, which is part of Stewart Island. It has an area of about 270 hectares, the majority of which is public land. It was named after Ulva Island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and was formerly called Coopers Island. Song: Hoki Hoki Tuna Mai from Kiri te Kanawa of her Album Maori Songs.
