-- About this video --
Today is our last day in Stewart Island, New Zealand, so we are going to show you one more awesome things to do in Stewart Island: the Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary. Ulva Island is a pest free island meaning that the New Zealand bird species can thrive there! It’s one of the best places to see New Zealand birds.
It’s a 5-minute journey on the Ulva Island Ferry to get to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is connected with a network of walking tracks to explore the island. The best way is to take it slow to see more birds.
Ulva Island is home to a great deal and abundance of species: Kiwi birds, tui, kaka, kakariki/parakeet, oyster catchers, wood pigeon, yellowhead, weka and so much more! We spend most time with the weka and weka chicks but we see all of these birds except for a kiwi bird! You’re best chances are to arrive early morning to see a kiwi bird.
For one of the best places to see wildlife in New Zealand, we couldn’t recommend Ulva Island more as it’s the best example of bird sanctuary in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary? Would you add Ulva Island to your NZ bucket list? LUK in the comments.

Stewart Island & Ulva Island New Zealand
Stewart Island/Rakiura is the third-largest island of New Zealand. It lies 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of South Island. Its permanent population is slightly fewer than 400 people. Rakiura is the more commonly known and used Māori name. It is usually translated as Glowing Skies, possibly a reference to the sunsets for which it is famous or for the Aurora Australis, the southern lights that are a phenomenon of southern latitudes. Ulva Island is a small island about 3.5 km long lying within Paterson Inlet, which is part of Stewart Island. It has an area of about 270 hectares, the majority of which is public land. It was named after Ulva Island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and was formerly called Coopers Island. Song: Hoki Hoki Tuna Mai from Kiri te Kanawa of her Album Maori Songs.
Ulva Island (Stewart Island Trip)
New Zealand October 2019.
After a night at the Bunkers Backpackers in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart island we took the morning ferry ⛴ across to Ulva Island ????, a bird ???? sanctuary which is one of the few places in NZ that is pest and predator free. It was cleared of Rats ???? in 1996 which are known to eat the eggs ???? of the native birds.
From the minute we stepped off the boat you could hear the caucus of the birds which ranged from sweet whistling melodies ???? to the screeches of the Kaka (an endangered large native parrot).
Walking through the thick dense forest ???? it really felt like a trip back in time, how New Zealand once would’ve been before the European colonisation brought in pests such as deer, rats, possums and stoats. I have never heard such abundant numbers of birds in one place, which is how New Zealand was described by early British explorers. It’s is sad how much has changed in the time that has passed.
The birds would fly down to great us along the trail or never seemed bothered by us at all. Due to a lack of native predators the birds have lost most of their fear instinct which while adorable when their curiosity pushes them to approach people leaves them very vulnerable.
After checking out some beautiful beaches ???? and being surrounded by Weka’s (kind of like a native chicken), we started to head back through the forest to our ferry back to Stewart island before getting our ferry ⛴ back to the mainland. Lucky the sun ☀️ was shining and we had no wind on the return journey so the ride was much smoother than the start of our trip!

Ulva Island; Stewart Island (Bird Sanctuary)
During a trip visit to Oban on Stewart Island (Rakiura), we took a side trip to Ulva Island. Also known as Te Wharawhara, it lies off Stewart Island, and is a beautiful, island sanctuary open to the public. It is one of the few pest-free open sanctuaries in New Zealand. In this unspoiled rainforest you can see rare birds and plants at close quarters in a safe environment mostly unchanged by human activity and free of introduced animals. It is managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and supported by the Ulva Island Charitable Trust as an open island sanctuary.
Birds we spotted (and in this video):
- Weka (Gallirallus australis)
- Stewart Island Robin (Petroica australis)
- Kaka (Nestor meridionalis)
We also saw a sea lion, down at the bottom of a set of stairs right next to the track we were walking along. We had to take a different route because it seemed grumpy, and we were scared of being bitten (apparently they move fast along the beach).

Kiwi bird spotting on Ulva Island, Stewart Island, New Zealand
On my wonderful trip with Stray Bus New Zealand, I saw this little one in the bush on Ulva Island, a small island next to Stewart Island, endding part of New Zealand. It's said that very hard to see Kiwi at day time, but we did. It must be so hungry! XXX

Visiting Oban and Stewart Island
In October 2018, I went with my sisters and some friends to do the Rakiura Great Walk in Stewart Island, as well as visiting Ulva Island too. This is footage that was taken from the rest of the trip, mainly looking around Oban, where we saw a lot of kaka and tui birds. We also had a look in the Oban Presbyterian Church, which has a bit of a Norwegian story!
Oban is the main settlement on Stewart Island (Rakiura), the southernmost of the main three islands of New Zealand. Oban is located on Halfmoon Bay, and has aircraft connections with Invercargill and a ferry service to Bluff. The settlement was named after Oban in Scotland, (An t-Òban in Scottish Gaelic, meaning The Little Bay), due to the strong influence Scottish settlers had in the south of early colonial New Zealand. According to the March 2001 New Zealand census, the island's permanent resident population was 387 at that time. Newer estimates put the population at around 400.
