We went on a day trip from Fukuoka to Beppu on the Sonic Limited Express train (about 2 hours). From Beppu Station you can take the bus to the first 5 hells in the Kannawa district, then another bus to the final 2 hells. The hells we visited are: Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku. They're all natural hot springs, the same type as found in Japanese onsen. They really are so strange and unusual, and this was the highlight of my time in Kyushu.

Hells of Beppu : Umi Jigoku - Oita - 海地獄 - 4K Ultra HD
Famous for its many hells or in Japanese Jigoku (地獄) Beppu city is by far the best location in Japan to enjoy these natural wonders in a unique, yet quite touristy fashion. Beppu counts seven different hells, but two of them are, as far as we are concerned, the most interesting ones and today we will start with the beautiful Umi Jigoku.
Umi in Japanese stands for sea, and you could translate the name of the place as the “sea hell”. Thanks to its beautiful boiling blue water, Umi Jigoku is Beppu’s most famous hell of all. Umi Jigoku was created approximately 1,200 years ago following the eruption of Mt. Tsurumi. And despite its ocean color looks, the water in Umi Jigoku is actually around 98°C/209°F!

It is a cooking method using high temperature steam heat spouted from hot spring, and has been used in Beppu since the Edo period. Put the food on the side, put it in a cauldron where about 100 degrees of steam called Hell steaming pot spouts, and just put a lid.
Because the steam is steamed at once in the hot spring steam that contains salt, the original taste of the food is trapped.
Beppu Tetsuwa Onsen, which uses a hot spring fume of 98% Celsius and 100% geothermal energy, is a facility where you can experience the traditional cooking method “Hell steamed dishes” used from the Edo period.
In addition, the hot spring cooling system monument Yureidaki and Drinking center, and the adjacent pocket park foot steaming and footbath which can be used by wheelchair users are also available.

Located within the hot springs prefecture of Oita in Kyushu is the world famous hot springs resort town of Beppu. Visitors can experience eight different springs here: Beppu, Kannawa, Myoban, Kankaiji, Hamawaki, Kamegawa, Horita and Shibaseki. Declared National Beauty of Japan, is the Most Beautiful of the 8 Hells JIGOKU thermal pools attractions of Beppu city Oita Prefecture Kyushu Japan and in walking distance from most of KANNAWA ryokans and hotels. It might not be as big as similar lakes in Rotorua New Zealand but it is by far the most curated and attractive in the world with the perfectly manicured Japanese garden, the glowing red Shinto Shrine Torii gates ⛩️⛩️⛩️and red bridges, then there is another Green Lake with stunning mountain reflected in it, a Red pond, a foot-spa hot spring, a water lilies greenhouse, an amazing souvenirs shop also selling the caramel pudding or eggs allegedly boiled in the very ⛲UMI JIGOKU and so much more in this establishment. If you have time to visit all 8 Hell JIGOKU attractions you should buy an entry pass for 2000 Yen otherwise just pay 400 Yen at the entrance of those you choose to visit. But UMI JIGOKU is really a must see! I went during lunchtime and it was less crowded maybe...
