Mtunzini & Surrounding Attractions
The Zulu word emthunzini means a place in the shade but in the history of this beautiful small coastal town it refers specifically to the place under the milkwood trees near the Mlalazi River where the White Zulu chief, John Dunn, would meet with the tribal elders of the area.
Visiting the town today gives exactly that feeling - a place in the shade.
Blessed with a sub-tropical climate (humid summers and mild winters) and a high annual rainfall, Mtunzini - or The Village, as the locals often refer to it - boasts a clean, safe, peaceful and abundant environment with a stunning outlook over the Umlalazi Nature Reserve and the sea.
The whole town of Mtunzini was declared a Conservancy in 1995 and it is well-known for its commitment to the preservation of its natural heritage.
A grove of raphia palms beside the railway line is one of the few declared natural monuments in the country and is the best place to spot the rare Palmnut Vulture which nests close to the top of the palm.
The town boasts a variety of leisure activities - including a challenging 18-hole 71 par golf course, fishing, waterskiing, tennis, bowls and horse riding. Mtunzini also boasts a range of a range of accommodation establishments and restaurants.
Mtunzini is just a hop off the N2 - making this serene seaside village the ideal coastal base for exploring the nearby game reserves and cultural and historical attractions.
Umlalazi Nature Reserve South Africa
On today’s adventure of American gypC we’re giving you a glimpse of Umlalazi Nature Reserve on the northern coast of Durban, South Africa. Even though it didn’t have big game animals, it does offer a quiet beach, some cabins for rent, lakes, fishing and more. Me, my husband, and sister went to Durban, South Africa to visit some family and we decided to spend two days in Umlalazi.
One of my favorite things about this reserve is the monkeys. They were everywhere and since we spent the night there we had time to get aquatinted. Our first meet and greet was when one of them came in the cabin and stole an apple. We had most of our meals on the table outside and every time we would clear the table they would come and grab any leftover. Even though they were mischievous as most monkeys are they were not aggressive and made the trip fun.
I really liked the diversity of this Umlalazi Nature Reserve. The beach was very unique, it was the most secluded beaches I’ve ever been on. I felt like we found a little piece of earth undiscovered. When my cousin said lets go to the beach I was thinking beach chairs, umbrellas, drinks but this beach didn’t really have any of that. What it did have is a violent waves which is probably a surfers heaven but it was a little scary to me. The landscape was also unique, it had a desert feel to it with big sand dunes.
Overall we really enjoyed this place. Getting to stay overnight to have some bonfire and sing-a-longs while we enjoyed the countless stars in the skies was on of the best parts of Durban trip. We didn’t quite see mufasa but the monkeys made it worthwhile. I will mention there are some Zebras and other animals but you would have to drive around to find them and we didn’t get to do that. There are also water activities available on the lakes including fishing, kayaking and canoeing.

MTUNZINI MANGROVE SWAMP FOREST WALKTHROUGH - VISUAL POEM 2017_08_26
I went to the lovely Mtunzini in Kwazulu-Natal on the 28th of August 2017 to look for a dead Humpback whale that washed out just north of the main beach. The sea took the whale back and I could not see much except a part of its tail that remained on the beach. But I used my time there well. I visited the Mangrove Swamp Forest at the Mlalazi river in the Umlalazi Nature Reserve and it was a very pleasant experience. I decided there that I should make a 3D walkthrough video so that everybody can enjoy this. This is it.
There is a sign at the entrance of the forest that describes what it is about.

Mtunzini and Entumeni: Coastal Forest Hiking
Episode 2: Hi everyone and welcome to stop number 2 on the Ultimate South African Road Trip: This week we're in Mtunzini
Mtunzini is a small coastal village about 130 km north of Durban. I've lived in Durban my whole life and this is the first time I've been to Mtunzinz and the more time I spend out here, the more I'm asking myself why I haven't done this before?
This place is such a gem! I didn't quite realise it until I got to really explore a bit. We've been here for about 4 days now, and I don't think we've touched the surface of what can be done in Mtunzini.
The town itself is in the centre of an incredibly beautiful region. The Umlalazi Nature Reserve on the coast is home to some amazing hikes. We spent a day doing the Siyaya Trail and visiting the Raffia Palm Monument which is basically a palm tree cathedral. There is also an incredible section of mangroves on the lagoon. So just in this little section there is already so much that you can do from hiking to mountain biking to trail running, Mtunzini has it all.
We also spent some time outside the town. We trekked inland towards Eshowe and the Entumeni Nature Reserve. This 750ha scarp forest is home to some incredible Wild Plum, Flatcrown and Giant Umzimbeet trees. We were lucky enough to have hiked in Spring, so the Clivias were flowering as well as some of the ground orchids and ferns.
If you live in Durban and you're stuck for something to do this weekend, then I strongly recommend visiting Mtunzini and packing for a weekend outdoors!

WEEKEND IN THE WILD | MTUNZINI
Weekend in the Wild, we had a magical weekend away in a secluded little town called Mtunzini for Bella’s sister’s birthday. Where the beaches are untouched and Zebra roam around free. We encounter all sorts of different Wild animals from Eagles to wild monkeys and Zebra. It was a relaxing weekend spent with family and friends at the lake where many people were fishing or taking boat rides at Sun set.

Mtunzini | June 2018 | Cinematic | HD
Just a little video I made with my DJI Mavic Pro drone during our weekend at Mtunzini Forest Lodge, 1-3 June 2018.
The Raphia Palm Forest is absolutely magical, the trails amazing, beach clean and safe. Nature at it's best.
Who knew flying a drone in a forest was such a great idea.

SEARCHING FOR A DEAD HUMPBACK WHALE AT MTUNZINI BEACH - DIARY_2017_08_26
So on this day, Saturday the 26th of August 2017, I have decided to go to Mtunzini Beach to search for a dead #Humpback whale. The previous day was the 25th and that was when I read in our local newspaper, The North Coast Courier, that a dead whale had washed out on Mtunzini beach during the past week. The area where the beach is, is within the Umlalazi Nature Reserve and there are beautiful forests and hiking trains as well as animals to see.
