Author name: Brian D. Kharpran Daly
Title: Caves for the Uninitiated
Page size/soft or hardcover/color or b&w interior/page count/SRP/ISBN:
6x9, soft, b&w, 152 pp, $12.50, 978-1-61897-470-9
Caves for the Uninitiated is the story of a group of young people, who after exploring a cave for the first time, become fascinated with the world of caves and caving. Inspired and awed by the beauty and splendor of this mysterious underground realm, this group of young fledgling cavers goes on to spend several days with a pair of veteran caving experts. The seasoned experts share their own knowledge of caves; cave conservation and caving as a sport with the young people. At the end of this brief period of instruction, several of the boys and girls decide to take up caving themselves.
While it is delivered as a charming work of fiction, Caves for the Uninitiated also contains valuable, real-world information about caves and cave sciences. It was based upon the actual experiences of Author Brian D. Kharpran Daly, who has been exploring caves in his native Meghalaya for over 20 years, and knows this underground world intimately.
Brian D. Kharpran Daly was born in Shillong, the capitol of Meghalaya, a small Indian state. A former economic investigator and CEO of the Shillong Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd., he retired in 2012. As a founding member of the Meghalaya Adventurers' Association, he has been exploring caves since 1992. In 2002 he was awarded the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award by the Government of India for his work in discovering and documenting the caves of Meghalaya.

Mawsmai Cave in Meghalaya : a major crowd puller that leaves tourists spellbound
Situated around 6 Kms from Cherrapunjee, the Mawsmai Caves are a major crowd puller that leaves tourists spellbound. These limestone caves have the distinction of being the only caves in Meghalaya that are lit enough to enable tourists to enjoy the natural formations in awe.
Though the caves are long, only a distance of 150 meters is open for tourists, while the other section is closed. The stalactites and stalagmites caves have innumerable forms, shapes and sizes inside leaving one to imagine as many life forms as possible. This magnificent natural wonder is the handiwork of years of natural abrasion and underground water.

CAVES IN INDIA
Cave research in India, encompassing the study of speleology and biospeleology, is still in its infancy. Although there are thousands of caves in India, research expeditions occur in few states. The Siju Cave of state Meghalaya is the first limelighted natural cave from India. Several studies were carried out in this cave during the beginning of Twentieth Century. The Kotumsar Cave of Central India is one of the most explored caves of India.[1] Biologists have classified many types of cavernicoles, i.e. trogloxenes, troglophiles and troglobites, from this cave. Dr. Jayant Biswas is one notable researcher in this field; Biswas's effort not only explains the subterranean ecosystem properly but also various aspects of science related to cave study.
Lumshnong cave ...
Mynshiang cave / kotsati cave in Lumshnong is the one of the longest cave in meghalaya state .. it is located in Lumshnong town of east jaintia hills district. .
Can This Really Happen?
In this chapter, we learnt about many strange and mysterious natural and man made wonders. India, being a vast country, is full of many more such wonders. One such natural wonder is found in Mizoram. These caves have been formed over centuries. Some people believe that the porous looking holes in the rock at the roof are a result of natural water activity. It is still a mystery as to what caused such strange formations in the rocks.
Another strange occurrence is the discovery of human skeletons at Roopkund in Uttarakhand. The lake is now famously called the Skeleton Lake. The skeletons were discovered in 1942 by Nanda Devi game reserve ranger, H K Madhwal. The skeletons are visible in the clear water of the shallow lake during the one-month period when the ice melts. Along with the skeletons, wooden artifacts, iron spearheads, leather slippers and rings were also found. Scientists have conducted studies and found that these are more than a 1000 years old!
Yet another such natural formation in India are the caves of Meghalaya. These caves are some of the longest caves in the world! One such cave is the Mawsmai Cave that has been formed through years of natural rock erosion and underground water.
Another famous cave in Meghalaya is the Lumshynna Cave. This cave is made of limestones. It is also a site where fossils of land and marine animals can be seen.
Magnet Hill is a 'gravity hill' located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The layout of the area and surrounding slopes creates an optical illusion that the downhill road is actually an uphill road. Objects and cars on the hill may appear to roll 'uphill' against gravity when they are, in fact, rolling downhill. The surrounding hills actually block the horizon which tricks our mind into thinking that the downward slope is in fact going up! Strange, isn't it?
Do you know of any other natural wonders of India?

Inside View Of the Mawsmai caves, Meghalaya .....
Inside View Of the Mawsmai caves, Meghalaya .....The Mawsmai cave is located 6km from the main town of Sohra, as Cherrapunjee is locally known. It is one of the chief attractions besides the famous waterfalls for people visiting nearby Cherrapunjee from Shillong. Mawsmai Cave is open to tourist explorations and is lit up by halogen lights in certain portions, making it a relatively easy cave for beginners to navigate. The winding wet paths inside the caves call for caution and visitors may experience flashes of claustrophobia too.
The Indian state of Meghalaya is famous for its many caves, which attract tourists from India and abroad. A few of the caves in this region have been listed amongst the longest and deepest in the world. Most of the caves of these areas were either discovered or surveyed by the Europeans (especially by German, British and Italian cavers). Herbert Daniel Gebauer, Simon Brooks, Thomas Arbenz and Rosario Ruggieri are the most prominent name among them. Brian Khapran-Daly of Meghalaya Adventure association have expedite most of the caves of Meghalaya (stated above). In addition to these, the cavers' associations of Meghalaya have always been found to be active in cave discoveries of that plateau.
Unscientific quarrying of limestone led to the collapse of the Mawmluh cave of Meghalaya, and the caves of Jantia Hills are also in danger due to excessive quarrying of coal.
The 'National Cave Research and Protection Organization, India' has been formed to help protect the caves of India. In addition, members of the Meghalaya Adventures Association (principally, Brian Kharpan Dally) work to protect the natural caves of Meghalaya.
