Borders on Budgets: UNA National Park by Bus (Bihac, BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA)
Established in 2008, Una National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Europe's newest national parks. In addition to the mountains and the emerald green Una river, the park's remoteness and tranquility are two additional selling features of this natural phenomenon.
Matt is keen to visit this rural area of Bosnia. However, travelling to Una National Park by bus is not necessarily easy or, at times, possible. Follow along on his day's journey that also takes him through the Srpska region of the country.

ROAD TRIP ACROSS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA (2017)
We traveled across Bosnia and Herzegovina for six days with our 4x4 off-road vehicle, exploring cities, castles, waterfalls, mountains and other sights and attractions! The places we visited included: Bihać, Una National Park, Jajce, Vlašić mountain, Sarajevo, Trebević mountain, Banja Luka and Kozara mountain.
In this first part of a multi-episode VLOG series, join us on our trip to the city of Bihać, located in the northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Unsko-sanski kanton (province). The crystal-clear Una river runs through the city of Bihać and makes this part of the country a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Locals enjoyed the summer heat, brought out their boats and took a refreshing swim in the chilly mountain river. After our visit to Bihać, we moved on to see some more sights in the surrounding area, including Brekovica village overlooking the Una river canyon, Ostrožac castle (unfortunately, it was closed!) and Una National Park with its impressive Štrbački buk waterfalls. Already on Day 1, we were glad to have our off-road vehicle, as the access road to the waterfalls turned out to be unpaved and in pretty terrible shape.
We had a great time in Una-Sana canton and think that this region has a huge potential for tourism, not only because of Una river but also thanks to the proximity to Plitvice Lakes National Park just across the border in Croatia.
In the second part of this video series, we will take you to Jajce and explore the old town, the fortress and the famous waterfalls right in the city center.

Kako je ljepotica Una očarala starorimskog ratnika?
Pred ljepotom Une rimski ratnik ostao bez daha, lijepa Mara kumovala ime Martin Brodu, a Ostrovica ponad Kulen Vakufa krije tajnu o ženi koju su živu zazidali u tvrđavu.
Od mnogomrojnih narodnih predaja, koje se vezuju za ljepoticu Unu, Martin Brod i stari grad Ostrovica ponad Kulen Vakufa, izdvajamo tri naljepše. Legenda kazuje kako je starorimski ratnik, koji je u silnim bitkama ogrubio od osjećaja za lijepim, kada je ugledao smaragdnozelenu boju vode, bajkovite slapove, pozlaćenu sedru i živopisne obale čudesno lijepe rijeke, uskliknuo:
- Una!
Ispred njegovih očiju tekla je ljepotica rijeka kojoj ravne nema na svijetu. Jedna i jedina je toliko opčarala rimskog ratnika da je ostao na njenim obalama i nikamo više nije išao ratovati.
Legenda nadalje kazuje da je Rimljanin, skinuo okove, obukao pastirsku odoru i prepustio se unskim ljepotama. Slučaj je htio da jednog jutra na obali Une ugleda mladu i lijepu djevojku koja kao da je “izronila iz rijeke poprimivši njenu gotovo nestvarnu ljepotu.
Odlučio je pratiti “vidru od žene”. Djevojka je prešla je preko brvna, postavljenog između dvije sedre, i zamakla u sojenicu. Ušao je za njom i nije izlazio sve dok se nije dogodilo nešto što će prekaljenog ratnika učiniti najsretnijim čovjekom na svijetu.
U svom naručju nježno je držao prekrasno žensko čedo. Pogledao je Unu, podigao novorođenče visoko iznad glave i uzviknuo njeno ime:
- Una, Una, Una!
Neki vole kazati kako se i danas na obalama ove smaragdne rijeke može čuti glas najsretnijeg oca.
Una River
The Una River was named by the ancient Romans who when they first saw it, shouted UNA, which means one or only one. The total length of the Una River is approximately 212.5 km, and it springs near the villages Donja Suvaja and Donji Lapac.
This area has attracted the large number of inhabitants, mostly because of the free access to the water. The River spring is located at around 450 meters above sea level and it is protected as a geographical and environmental monument. It is very cold and it emerges with great force creating many vortexes. The first waterfall is only 20 m away from the spring.
The first large waterfall of its water course is located near Martinbrod, a village located at the bottom of the canyon where the Unac River flows into the Una River. Una is particularly breathtaking at this point because the tuff created numerous channels, rapids and little islands, as well as several large waterfalls, the largest of which is approximately 55 meters high. These natural waterfalls are the unique value that has been attracting enormous number of nature lovers and fishermen for decades, as well as artists seeking inspiration for their work in Una.
Traditionally, Una Regatta is held near Martinbrod (international tourist kayak race) that was interrupted in early 1990s, and restored after the recent w*r. Martinbrod is known throughout Europe for rafting, a sport ideal for restless and unruly course of the River Una, and therefore, it attracts a large number of sportsmen from across Europe every year. Nearby, there are several cultural monuments, the most significant one being the Monastery Rmanj and the Roman period structure Milaneva Tower that add to the magnificent beauty of the Una River.

Just 40 km from the Plitvice National Park lies National Park Una, which is the youngest and one of the prettiest of the three national parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. While Plitvice is overrun by hordes of tourists, nearby Una Nationa Park is still an offbeat gem and fairly unknown.

A wonderful autumnal day provides a great opportunity to hike through Una National Park in Bosnia.
The goal of the walk is to reach the waterfalls in the village of Martin Brod in this remote park. However, just because Una is remote, Matt still finds the locals with whom to engage.
