Been working in Toyama for my job, and took a quick trip to the onsen (Nov. 11, 2018).
The closest bullet train to this onsen is Kurobe Unazuki Onsen station. From there, you can take local trains or a car to get to this onsen town. It's calm, but very fun to hike the area, see the sights, and enjoy the food.

Kurobe Gorge Railway from Unazuki to Sasadaira
Kurobe Gorge Railway maybe is the most beautiful train ride in Japan. This train ride takes you through one of Japan's top 3 gorge and one of Japan's 100 hidden beauty. This video was taken in May 3rd 2015 and the last stop only to Sasadaira Station then back to Unazuki, in May 28st to November 30th this train can reach Keyakidaira (the last station of Kurobe Gorge Railway).

The Kurobe Gorge Railway in Unazuki Onsen town was an absolute highlight for us! Although not completely unknown, this place definitely deserves more attention! To finish the night off we tried two different michelin starred meals!... well not really we got the instant ramen from Tsuta and Nakiryu, both michelin starred ramen restaurants, but it was still really tasty!
If you are planning to go tickets are about 3900 yen (about 50 AUD). Make sure to not go on a public holiday like we did!

The Kurobe Gorge (黒部峡谷, Kurobe Kyōkoku) is a beautiful, forested ravine in the rugged mountains of the Northern Japan Alps.
Cut by the Kurobe River, it is one of the deepest gorges in Japan. Its steep, nearly vertical cliffs, untouched virgin forests, and outdoor hot springs have made it a famous destination to see natural scenic beauty. It is not to be confused with the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, which is nearby, but accessed from a completely different direction.
The main attraction of the gorge is the Kurobe Gorge Railway, a sightseeing train originally built to aid the construction of the Kurobe Dam. Today the small trains operate along a winding, 20 kilometer stretch between Unazuki and Keyakidaira Stations. The exciting 80 minute journey leads across more than 20 bridges and through over 40 tunnels, and offers visitors panoramic views of the gorge below. The trains stop at a few stations along the way where visitors can get off and explore.
The trains operate seasonally from mid April through November, and are most popular in autumn when the forested slopes along the railroad turn bright orange and red with beautiful fall colors. Since the mountains cover a large elevation range, the Kurobe Gorge enjoys a long fall color season which usually runs from mid October to mid November.
The trains carry a variety of cars. The majority of them are open sided cars with 4 person bench seats; however, most trains also offer one or two types of enclosed cars with more comfortable seating at an additional fee. When purchasing a ticket, you will be assigned a car number, but seats within the car are unnumbered. For the best views, sit on the right side of the train when heading into the gorge.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route! Japanese Alps! What a beauty to behold! If Toyama isn't in your to go list, maybe you should revisit that!
I apologize for some of the shaky video, I tried to go as light as I could. The video was shot with a Canon 6D mark 2 and a 24-70 as well as a 70-200. Canon L series 2.8 glass respectively. I was so sore carrying all that however the Onsens sure did help! :)
We have less than 8 months left in Japan! Going to miss life/travel he but we are excited for new opportunities!
Our trip to Toyama was a repeat of our last adventure; we decided to go again because the weather was bad and didn't see what we wanted to the first time.
We had inspiration from several youtubers on where to go for our trip. Oh the wonders of the internet!
Our first stop after taking the Shinkansen and taking a local train was Unazuki onsen town where we stayed at a Ryokan! That first day was spent riding the Kurobe railway and admiring the panoramic views of the event. Afterwards we soaked in the onsen and called it a night!
The next few days were a combination of hiking and taking various forms of transportation through the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. My wife and I decided to backpack the whole journey and I must say we are stronger now for it! One of the most memorable moments of the trip was speaking to a shaman at the top of the summit of Mount Tateyama he blessed us and offered us sake!

Unazuki hot spring is famous for Kurobe Kyokoku Line. An exciting trolley ride through 41 tunnels and over 22 bridges through Japan's deepest valley offers a breathtaking view. In winter, 'Carnival of the snow' is held in February on every year, and Japanese fire Ritual, the torch skiing, and fireworks, etc. are taken place. Since return pass of Toyama Regional Railway from Toyama to Unaduki station is free in winter, hope you visit this beautiful hot spring once.

Unazuki onsen has 2 public footbaths.
1-- Behind the train station, closes early about 5 pm.
2. Near the Entaijiso Ryokan. Open till late hours.
We had a gala time dipping our sore feet at the footbath near the ryokan. The hot spring water was great for tired legs.

1. #Kyoto to #Kanazawa by #JR #Thunderbird Ltd Exp train. A must eat at Kanazawa train station -- gold and silver leaf ice cream.
2. #Kanazawa to #Toyama by #JR #Hokuriku #Shinkansen. A must eat at Toyama train station -- cut fruits, desserts.
Buy Alpine route pass from Toyama Station which is valid for 5 days. Must be purchased 1 day in advance.
3. #Toyama to #Kurobe Unazuki Station by #JR #Hokuriku #Shinkansen.
4. Kurobe Unazuki local station (right across the Shinkansen Kurobe Unazuki station) to Unazuki Station by a local train. Tickets need to be purchased separately as they are not included in the JR pass. (Many hotels offer a pick up right from the Kurobe Unazuki Station).
