Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site
Josiah Henson's cabin at the end of the underground railroad is explained by Steven Cook the curator and manager of Uncle Tom's Cabin and Historic Site in Dresden, Ontario.
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the most famous book of the day Uncle Tom's Cabin based on Josiah Henson's autobiography The Life of Josiah Henson.
This cabin was home to Josiah Henson during much of his time in the area (1841 until his death in 1883). The cabin takes its name from the Stowe's famous novel.
The cabin has remained on the original Dawn Settlement lands and first opened as a museum in the 1940s, it was moved to its present location in 1964, and restored to an 1850 appearance in 1993.
The historic site includes: Josiah Henson's House (Uncle Tom's Cabin) outbuildings: a sawmill, smokehouse, and a pioneer church—including the pulpit from the original church from which Rev. J. Henson preached in Dresden.

Weekend Getaway from Toronto: Camping and Visit to Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Celebrating Canada's 150th)
Last weekend, I took a camping getaway with my boyfriend to Rondeau Provincial Park in Southern Ontario, Canada. It is the second oldest park in the province, established in 1894. We also visited Uncle Tom’s Cabin, in nearby Dresden, one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad that many slaves used to escape from slavery in the US. Nice mix of relaxation and history!

Uncle Tom's Cabin Monologue Marisol, Kenzie & Rachel
The opinions expressed here are solely those of the characters being impersonated from the classic novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.
In no way do any of the students hold to the opinions stated in the monologue.
The assignment was to choose a character and write a monologue defending slavery from the character's point of view.
The student's critical thinking skills were enhanced by forcing himself to get into the mind of someone who holds an opposing opinion.
Uncle Tom's Cabin Original Illustrations from 1852
The Abolition News Network, Inc. would like to present for the first time the complete illustrations from the 1852 3rd edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
This group of drawings depict the most physical and mental cruelty that were present in the Southern States in the 19th century and therefore may be too graphic to show to children. They also may be very disturbing to many adults who are not familiar with slavery, as it was practiced in the 19th century. This video is intended for those who have a serious interest in the history of American slavery as it existed in everyday life in the Southern states before the Civil War. Harriet Beecher Stowes characters portrayed in this book were all from real life actual people. This is explained more thoroughly in Key to Uncle Tom published in 1853.

Road Trip Vlog: Travelling Through Southern Ontario To Visit Uncle Tom's Cabin - Part 1
Hi KC Family! In this video I take you along as I visit part of the historical Underground Railroad, Uncle Tom's Cabin in Dresden, Ontario. This was a fun, educational, moving and beautiful trip and I hope you enjoy coming along with me. Part 2 will be coming soon.
Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story
Josiah Henson, a dynamic man with unyielding principles, overcame incredible odds to escape from slavery with his wife and children. His life inspired the lead character of ‘Uncle Tom’ in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 classic novel which has been recognized as one of the sparks that ignited the Civil War. Not only does Josiah’s story shed light on what life was like for enslaved people in the 1800s, but it allows us to witness the character of an intelligent, brave, and compassionate man who refused to succumb to the fate his masters had planned for him.
Josiah Henson was born into slavery in 1789 in Charles County, Maryland. As a child, he was sold to Isaac Riley, who later appointed him superintendent of the farm at an unusually young age because of Henson’s strength and intelligence. At twenty-two, Henson married a slave woman and they had twelve children, four while enslaved. Henson showed extreme loyalty to Riley who, in turn, entrusted him with exceptional responsibilities and allowed him to become a preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church.
However, when Henson attempted to buy his freedom, Riley cheated him and made plans to sell him south. Fearing separation from his family, Henson fled north with his wife and children the summer of 1830. After passing through Ohio and New York, they settled in Dresden, Ontario, Canada. Henson became a preacher and a leader in the Afro-Canadian community, and he even traveled back into the United States to help other slaves escape.
Henson also served the British as a captain of Afro-Canadian volunteers in the Canadian Rebellions of 1837-1838, two uprisings in which the colonies of Lower and Upper Canada were in conflict over political reform. He founded the British American Institute in 1842, an Afro-Canadian community and industrial school intended as a refuge for escaped slaves.
Yet somehow he’s been mostly lost to history… until now.
