It Takes An Island - The Memorial Day Weekend Tour
Here are just a few highlights from OMS's Tour of Hood Canal & Bainbridge Island in the beautiful Puget Sound.
Produced by Eric Newland using the iPhone, DJI Mavic and Edited on the iPhone using Adobe Rush.
The Hood Canal Run is an annual event coordinated by Carl Barfield. Mini enthusiasts from other locations look forward to this run along open roads through rural areas, taking in beautiful views. This tends to be of the “spirited run” variety and stops were made at wineries, oyster bars, burger joints and scenic viewpoints. Over the years, interest has expanded and is now presented as a hallmark event for the newly-formed Peninsula Mini Society (yes, PMS) for the growing number of Mini folks in Mason County, Grays Harbor County, Kitsap County and the Olympic Peninsula.
The morning of May 25th started outside of Elmer's Restaurant at Delta Park in Portland, OR.
After a brief bio-break in Cathlamet, Washington the group picked up John Wohlslagel driving his beautiful 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S ( a past OMS Preservation Award Winner) the group reached the Northwest Carriage Museum in Raymond, Washington at 12:30 PM for lunch and guided tour. Upon arrival, the group sat down for lunch as Steve Clarke (and Raymond resident) who generously donated Borris, joined the group to observe this unique museum tour.
OMS members engaged with Executive Director, Laurie Bowman & Museum Curator, Jerry Bowman. The Northwest Carriage Museum preserves a piece of transportation history with over 50 magnificently restored coaches on display took OMS visitors back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the horse was the transportation king. Celebrities of the time might have cruised the streets in the elegant C-Spring Dress Landau pulled by a matching pair of horses. It was the Rolls Royce of its day. The equally beautiful one-horse Summer Coupe Brougham, built in 1908, featured sliding windows and patent leather fenders.
By 2 PM the group departed, fueled up and took to the road in the Saturday afternoon mist headed to Sanderson Field airport in Shelton meeting the rest of the Puget Sound group.
The group of 22 automobiles headed along the Hood Canal to Hama Hama Oyster Saloon in Lilliwaup, Washington for lively, rustic seafood over a bonfire and picnic tables as the group ordered oysters & clams amid waterfront views. This 5th generation family-run oyster and tree farm has a reputation for quality built on hard work and clean water. After this happy hour spot, the hoard of MINI/Minis headed to our final destination of The Point Casino & Hotel for some well-deserved rest, relaxation, dining and gambling. Rumor has it that one individual doubled their money.
The next morning the group departed at 10 AM from the OMS designated parking area to tour Bainbridge Island that enjoys some historical fame in western Washington. Port Blakely, on the island, was the site of the first 5-masted schooners built on the west coast. The first was the Inca, built at Port Blakely in 1896 with more that followed. This was also where Chief Sealth (for whom Seattle was incorrectly named) was from and his grave is located on the Suquamish Tribe Reservation immediately off the island on the other side of the Agate Pass Bridge. Once a very rural community with several families going back many generations, Bainbridge Island is now a quirky mix of old families, hippies, wealthy retirees and even more wealthy folks who commute to Seattle. Quite a few people who do very well in Seattle’s tech industry live here, and this is where Washington State’s current governor resides. Still, it is not uncommon to see these cultures collide. As an example; For older folks who have lived here their whole lives, it was very common to have an “island car” that is not licensed, registered or insured. This obviously creates anxiety, stress, and sometimes conflict when they encounter a Bainbridge Island Police officer who is wondering why their ‘60s vintage car doesn’t have any plates on it. (“But officer, this is my island car!”)
The roads on Bainbridge Island were winding and narrow. The route was pretty straight forward. A common exclamation was “Oh my gosh! I’m going to need a navigator riding with me for this!” There was no need to sweat it as it was an easy route because we were on an island! And nobody got lost!
We arrived at the Comfort Inn Port Orchard, overlooking the US Naval Base in Bremerton and the group checked in.
By 6 PM the group departed for the final dinner reservation at Puerto Vallarta Resturant where we all enjoyed each others company over margaritas and a Mexican dinner buffet before heading back to the hotel. The summer sun began to drop as members walked the boardwalk while others uncorked wine over a picnic table to chat about the past 48 hours of adventure while watching the sunset over Puget Sound.

The Master
The spacious master retreat comes lavishly detailed with a connecting spa-inspired master bathroom, complete with his and her vanities and custom walk-in closets.
