190,000 years ago the giant shield volcano Undara erupted expelling more than 23 cubic kilometres of lava. That lava flowed into ancient river beds, and its surface solidified while molten lava continued to flow through the tube beneath. When the lava flows finally subsided the tube drained clear leaving some of the largest and longest lava tubes on earth. Over the years sections of the lava tubes have collapsed revealing fantastic land-forms like the Giant Arch. The collapsed sections of lava tube create unique micro-environments that provide habitats for rare species of flora and fauna.
The opening shot in this video contains computer generated imagery (CGI) of what the volcanic landscape may have looked like 190,000 years ago. This imagery gives way to present day views of the Kalkari Volcano Crater and the remnants of the Undara Lava Tubes. Following a brief pause to look closer at some of the wild life we travel underground to view the magnificent formations of the Undara Lava Tubes. Given the high contrast between daylight and shadows in the lava tubes this video has been captured using a High Dynamic Range (HDR) technique to capture as much of the natural beauty as possible.

Mt Surprise & Undara travel video guide, Queensland Australia
As we left Cairns in Queenslands Tropical North we continued our journey along the the savannah way. Our next stop was Mount Surprise.
Mount Surprise is a railway town on the Cairns to Forsayth Railway and is the first town within the Gulf Savannah encountered by visitors approaching from the east. You can leave from Cairns and take a trip on the Savannah Lander or self drive into this region.
The town is QLD's centre for gem fossicking with quantities of topaz, quartz, spinel, garnet, cairngorm and aquamarine to be found. It also sits on the edge of an immense lava flow from an ancient volcano to the south east.
The Undara volcanic lava tubes are the best preserved lava tubes of its kind anywhere in the world and are definitely worth a visit.

Active Volcanoes in Australia?!
Did you know there are active volcanoes near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia?! This is my short geology-travel video compilation talking about some of the volcanic deposits and expression that formed from these volcanoes! It is following a field trip I did recently with University of Tasmania/CODES where we checked out what is known as the Newer Volcanic Province in southern Victoria and along the Great Ocean Road.
