The Mystery of the Unfinished Obelisk of Egypt | Ancient Architects
The famous #UnfinishedObelisk of #Egypt, which still sits in a granite quarry in Aswan, is known for its massive size, but also because the work that was carried out on it was never completed.
Had it been finished, it would have been the largest obelisk ever constructed by the #AncientEgyptians. Nevertheless, the fact that it remains in an unfinished state has given us the opportunity to learn more about the ways the ancient Egyptians produced these colossal, important and iconic structures, but is it as straight forward as Egyptologists say, or does the creation of these enormous granite #obelisks still remain a mystery?

The Obelisk of Ancient Egypt: Ancient Egyptians Architecture
Obelisks were prominent in the architecture of the ancient Egyptians, who placed them in pairs at the entrance of temples. The word obelisk as used in English today is of Greek rather than Egyptian origin because Herodotus, the Greek traveller, was one of the first classical writers to describe the objects. A number of ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived, plus the Unfinished Obelisk found partly hewn from its quarry at Aswan. These obelisks are now dispersed around the world, and fewer than half of them remain in Egypt.
The earliest temple obelisk still in its original position is the 68-foot (20.7 m) 120-ton red granite Obelisk of Senusret I of the XIIth Dynasty at Al-Matariyyah part of Heliopolis.
The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra, and during the brief religious reformation of Akhenaten was said to be a petrified ray of the Aten, the sundisk. It was also thought that the god existed within the structure...

Unfinished Obelisk, Aswan, Egypt, Part 1
As part of my touring of Aswan, I stopped by the unfinished obelisk not far from the center of the city.
It is far more massive than you might imagine. There was also no one else there besides me and my guide so it was great to have a run of the place. The minimum time spent there should be 1hr if you are rushed. Otherwise I suggest a detailed observation of at least 1.5-2hrs.
Make sure to pick up one of the diorite pounders, the green looking rocks and sample hitting it against granite stone to see just how difficult that would be to do.
Also, make sure to go to the smaller sideways mounted obelisk and look at the cutting lines and look especially underneath.
Obelisk of Ancient Egypt - Part 1
The soaring stone monuments known as obelisks were the Egyptian pharaohs' way of capturing a ray of revered sunlight in stone. In this section, follow the shows ultimately successful attempts to raise an obelisk.

How the Egyptians Made Obelisks Aswan, Egypt
Nile Cruises and/or visits to Aswan usually include: The Aswan Dam, Philae Temple; and Unfinished Obelisk Quarry where most of Ancient Egypt's famous obelisks were hewn.
Very interesting how stone cutters began working on an obelisk. If a break occurred, the stone was discarded. Once a humungous stone weighing upwards of 1,000 Tons was completed, the long process of rolling it on logs towards the Nile during flood season; getting it to the proper temple; and then raising the stone, boggles the mind.

Lost Ancient High Technology Of Egypt: The 1200 Ton Obelisk
One of the most amazing and least understood attempted achievements of ancient Egypt is the 1200 ton unfinished obelisk located in the Aswan quarry.
The dynastic people could not have shaped this huge stone, due to its size and hardness, and there is ample evidence that they tried to cut it into smaller pieces, unsuccessfully.
Come with us March 8 to 21, 2015, and see it for yourself:
Obelisks in Egypt
Huge obelisks made of solid granite pose a mystery, as it would have been difficult to have worked with this stone thousands of years ago. The quarries at Aswan can be visited, and you can see the Unfinished Obelisk. Others reside at the Temple of Karnak. Found More At WwW.Traveldir.Tk

Walking Around the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan, Egypt. Original Sound, no Commentary.
The unfinished obelisk is the largest known ancient obelisk and is located in the northern region of the stone quarries of ancient Egypt in Aswan, Egypt.
Its creation was ordered by Hatshepsut (1508–1458 BC), possibly to complement what would later be known as the Lateran Obelisk (which was originally at Karnak, and was later brought to the Lateran Palace in Rome). The unfinished obelisk is nearly one-third larger than any ancient Egyptian obelisk ever erected. If finished it would have measured around 42 m (approximately 137 feet) and would have weighed nearly 1,090 metric tons (1,200 tons), a weight equal to about 200 African elephants.
The obelisk's creators began to carve it directly out of bedrock, but cracks appeared in the granite and the project was abandoned. The bottom side of the obelisk is still attached to the bedrock.
