Abandoned Mall Charlestown USA, Utica, NY (Urban Exploring)
We explore what remains of Charlestown USA, one of the first outlet malls in the United States. Located in Utica, New York.
The building was constructed in the early 1900s and used as a munitions factory during WWI and WWII.
The building was converted into a outlet mall in the 1980s until its demise in the early 1990s.
Although it has been closed for over 20 years, there is still a lot of stuff in the building; clothes, computers, old files, and so on. Many stores still had signs, and the restaurants still had all of their kitchen equipment and glassware inside.
The condition of the building varies greatly from part to part. Some areas are flooded, moldy and falling apart, while others seem untouched.
It is clear that many people still frequent here as we found many new beer cans and drinks.

The Adirondack Carousel and The Adirondack Scenic Railroad
This video was taken on September 21, 2012 at about 12:15 p.m. showing the close physical relationship of the Adirondack Carousel in the William Morris Park and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. One sees the Adirondack Scenic Railroad train leaving the Union Station in downtown Saranac Lake, N.Y. on its first return trip of the day to Lake Placid, N.Y. The economic relationship of the carousel and the railroad is a symbiotic one from which both greatly benefit, as do the business communities of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, N.Y. This same railroad line's tracks extend all the way to Utica, N.Y. where they directly connect to Amtrak, although at the present time the 80 miles of track between Saranac Lake and Thendara, N.Y. are out-of-service trackage and cannot be used at present for passenger service. However these tracks could easily be restored, as earlier the tracks between Snow Junction and Thendara, N.Y., and Lake Placid and Saranac Lake were restored. This would give the North Country direct railroad access to the rest of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Adirondack Carousel is located at the corner of Depot Street and Bloomingdale Avenue (New York State Route 3), and Saranac Lake Union Railroad Depot is located on Depot Street approximately 600 feet from the Carousel. One can see in the video that the only thing that separates the northbound (in railroad terms) passenger loading platform from the lawn which surrounds the carousel is a chain link fence.

(HD) Amtrak Maple Leaf Train Crossing Niagara River From USA to Canada
Watch in high definition (1080P) for the best viewing experience.
About the video: Amtrak's Maple Leaf passenger train service runs between New York City in New York State of the USA, and Toronto in the province of Ontario of Canada. With few people aware of the services' existence and less needing to travel via the train across the border particularly into Canada, service of Amtrak's Maple Leaf is endangered and may soon be made to operate less frequently or even cut off of Amtrak's timetable completely. In this video Amtrak's Maple Leaf crosses the Niagara River from the USA into Canada with P42DC 174 in the lead.

Where Am I? | Chris Henry | TEDxUtica
Placemaking is the future of Utica. Rustbelt cities across the country rise and fall based on their ability to create spaces that people want to be in. Most people do not want to be directed into an undesirable place. That is why placemaking principles focus on the “people.” Placemaking is all about community driven action to develop functional places that are also flexible, collaborative and sociable. Through this framework, these public driven spaces grow into desirable destinations for the community. They become destinations because the people are involved. It gives them a sense of ownership. And ultimately, since the people are involved with the form and function of these spaces, they will naturally reflect the personality of the people.
Christopher Henry is a Utica “transplant” from Pennsylvania. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). While at ESF he had the privilege to study under distinguished teaching professors Richard Hawks and George Curry. His major professor was Fullbright Senior Specialist Emanuel J. Carter. Under his guidance Christopher wrote his capstone study: “Mixed-Use Development in a Time of Opportunity”. Chris conducted a comparative design study between urban and rural developments in response to natural gas exploration in Northeast Pennsylvania. Now he lives and works in Utica. He is currently working with the Utica Children’s Museum adventure playground and numerous commercial and residential design customers. He is fortunate to work for a local design build firm where he gets to make “places” one house and business at a time.
