RUSSIA: MOSCOW: EXHIBITION OF CLOSED CITIES
Russian/Nat
Years after the fall of communism, the former Soviet Union is continuing to yield its once most closely guarded secrets.
Cities whose very existence was for years concealed are for the first time openly displaying the results of their work for the former regime's military programme.
They were at the heart of the Soviet Union's defence industry - cities like Chelyabinsk- seventy and Penza-nineteen.
For years out of bounds to outsiders, these former 'closed cities' have had to face up to the harsh reality of the post-Communist world.
Previously hushed-up their very existence has come to depend on people - and businesses - knowing about them.
Now an exhibition in Moscow - opened by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Sergei Shakhrai - is helping them get the word out.
Key defence industry enterprises from these former secret cities have had an open house in the Russian capital, displaying lines of civilian products ranging from wooden bears to kitchen utensils.
In the past workers in the defence sector enjoyed higher wages and received rations of meat, fresh fruits and vegetables when the rest of the Soviet population went hungry.
But the opening up of Russian society and the disarmament that followed the Cold War put an end to the privileges.
Now, following free market reforms, many of the state owned companies are finding it extremely hard to adapt themselves to new conditions.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
The most difficult thing is not conversion of production, but conversion of mentality. The cities lived in exceptional conditions and it is now extremely difficult to grasp that the state can only guarantee a minimum and the rest they should earn by themselves.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Shchukin, Mayor Snezhinsk (formerly Chelyabinsk-70)
These former privileged cities are feeling the pinch following a sharp drop in orders from the military sector.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Only 30 per cent of our orders are military now. The enterprise used to produce securities systems, guarding nearly 70 per cent of the Soviet Union's borders.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Skripkin, Marketing Director, Start plant
Low wages have forced many workers to leave for jobs in the private sector, but judging by the interest in the Moscow exhibition the future of Chelyabinsk-seventy and Penza- nineteen looks safe.

Scientist Helps Former Soviet Union
When the Soviet Union broke up two decades ago, many former Soviet countries lacked an environmental movement. Russian scientist Olga Speranskaya started researching the harmful effects that huge stockpiles of abandoned industrial chemicals were having in her own country. Her push to inform the public about the dangers of toxic chemicals led to the creation of a powerful environmental advocacy network in 11 former Soviet states. In Washington, VOA's Julia Ritchey talked with Speranskaya about her work.

.The SU-152 (Samokhodnaya ustanovka-152) was a Soviet self-propelled heavy howitzer used during World War II.
It mounted a 152 mm gun-howitzer on the chassis of a KV-1S heavy tank. Later production used an IS tank chassis and was re-designated ISU-152. Because of its adopted role as an impromptu heavy tank destroyer, capable of knocking out the heaviest German armoured vehicles—Tiger and Panther tanks, and Elefant tank destroyers—it was nicknamed Zveroboy (Beast Slayer)
The Red Army had possessed dedicated anti-fortification vehicles in the pre-war period, such as the KV-2 heavy tank armed with the 152.4 mm M-10 howitzer. Mass production of KV-2s ceased in October 1941, when the Kirov Works had to be evacuated to Chelyabinsk. Some made it to 1942 but their actual number remains unknown.[2] When the necessity for a new heavy breakthrough vehicle became apparent in the Soviet offensives, a new anti-fortification vehicle was designed with the same purpose in mind, but with higher mobility, heavier armor, reduced production cost, and the more powerful and accurate ML-20 152mm gun. Mounting the ML-20 in a turret was impossible due to its length and recoil, and it was eventually decided that the new vehicle should have a non-rotating gun mounted in a fixed casemate-style superstructure.
Prior to the issue of the State Defense Committee order there were several other anti-fortification vehicle projects, all of which were halted. Later in the war these projects were restarted. In December 1942 three different designs of pillbox killer vehicles were introduced by various engineer groups from the major Soviet artillery and tank factories. All of these designs used the ML-20 gun as a primary armament, with the KV-1S heavy tank chassis. After some discussion, the project of Josef Kotin was chosen for further mass production. This design successfully combined the ML-20 and KV-1S chassis with minimal expense.
The designation of the series of self-propelled guns was changed from KV-14 to SU-152. The ML-20 gun was slightly modified for mounting in the SU-152 — some handles were moved for improved gunner comfort. This variant had the designation ML-20S. The muzzle velocity and external ballistics were identical to the original towed ML-20 gun.
Although designed with no consideration for the anti-tank role, the SU-152 proved to have surprisingly good anti-tank capabilities due to the ML-20S's extremely heavy HE projectiles. Standard doctrine for purpose-built AT guns of the period universally relied on small, dense solid projectiles propelled to high velocities, optimized for punching through armor. Since the SU-152, like all SU-series self-propelled guns was not designed with tank killing in mind, no AP projectiles were issued to crews and no initial tests against armor were conducted. However, tests performed on captured Tiger tanks in early 1943 showed that the SU-152 was able to destroy them at any range with a fair degree of reliability (the only vehicle then in Russian service capable of doing so) by simply blowing the turret off the vehicle through sheer blast effect. This fortuitous discovery spurred massive SU-152 production and the formation of self-propelled artillery units, which then functioned as ersatz heavy tank destroyer battalions.
After the launch of SU-152 mass production the design was slightly modified to improve reliability. Initially the SU-152 lacked a machine gun, which was recognized as a severe weakness in urban warfare and other close combat. To solve this problem the DShK 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun installation was developed in the summer of 1943. Some SU-152s received it after repair. The SU-152 was the last member of the KV family of tanks in mass production, and was replaced by the ISU-152 on the ChKZ production lines in December 1943. The exact number of SU-152s produced differs even in Russian sources, with the most common figures being 670 or 704. The SU-152s that survived World War II were withdrawn from Soviet Army service in 1954.

Eduard Panov artist
Eduard Panov artist
Music, Pavel Panin
Eduard Panov – a famous Russian painter, a member of the Union of Moscow artists since 1985. He was born in Chelyabinsk in the South Ural. His father was an artist-restaurateur Porfiry Panov, a pupil of famous artists Meshkov and Grabar. He showed his artistic talent since a very young age. Since his childhood he could hear such names as Leonardo da Vinchi, Rubens, Rembrandt, Levitan and others and he couldn’t help inheriting the love for art and painting. E. Panov got an artistic education, he finished school and college of arts where he has been studying realistic manner of painting. Later in 1972 he graduated from the artistic department of Moscow Technological University.
The artist paints “pure” nature and with the help of his works he proves the value of ordinary nature around us.
E. Panov works much painting different landscapes. He enjoys painting still lifes, sometimes portraits. You can feel a gaily expectation of a day in the morning and a light sadness of saying good-bye to it in the evening. These two different states of nature are shown not only with the help of light and colors but also by the manner of execution. The painter analyses a lot both in his landscapes and still lifes, he can create an emotional image by means of colors. He’s got a surprisingly clear and plastic artistic language. The painter never deforms an object, he’s never casual with details, he hasn’t got any “unworked” places on a canvas. The main idea of his creation is a considered composition and the accuracy and neatness of his paintings. The artist is so keen on his creation that he can always find an inspiration and picture motives even if a place is boring at the first sight.
The painter travels a lot, he exhibits his pictures at Moscow, Russian and international exhibitions. His personal exhibitions were held in: Moscow (1983), Poland 1984 (Warsaw, Gdansk, Zelena Gura), Czech Republic 1985 (Prague, Brno, Bratislava), Germany 1987 (Berlin), India 1989 (Deli, Calcutta, Madras), Finland 1990 (Helsinki), Poland 1993 (Warsaw), Marocco 1994 (Rabat, Casablanca), Moscow 1998, Luxemburg 2000 and 2001, 2004. Germanyn 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, Cyprus 2002, 2003.
In 1994 his exhibition was entirely bought by Polish museum of art. A lot of foreign exhibitions were organized by Russian Center for International Scientific and Cultural Cooperation which the painter has been dealing with for a long time.
In May 2002 Russian President`s spouse L.Putina and the minister of culture Shvidkoi have attended Eduard Panov`s personal exhibition in Berlin. One of his pictures the artist has presented as a gift to missis L.Putina.
His works are presented in museums of Russia, Poland, in many foreign private collections.
Following the tradition Eduard gave all his knowledge and skills to his sons: Eduard junior who has graduated from the Russian Academy of Art in Moscow and Michael who is already a talented painter.
Lots of interesting articles and researches of his work can be found in Russian and foreign press.

Blue Foundation - Eyes On Fire (Official Music Video)
Official Blue Foundation Eyes on Fire Music Video feat. dancer Masha Greif.
The video has been shoot in the nightclub The Black Hole, in the Russsian city of Chelyabinsk. Located in the foothills of the Ural Mountains.
During the Cold War the city did not appear on any official maps and was a closed off atomic zone, which produced tanks and the first atomic bomb of the Sovjet Union.
For 45 years, Chelyabinsk, was closed to all foreigners and journalists .
Only in January of 1992 did President Boris Yeltsin sign a decree changing that.
For decades the atomic complex Mayak has let out radioactive water directly into the Techa - Chelyabinsk largest river. Scientists and enviromental organisations call the area 'one of the the most polluted places' on earth.
Besides its warindustry, the city is has a very vibrant dance scene.
