Sihanoukville Cambodia in 2019 - WHAT HAPPENED?! ????????
Sihanoukville Cambodia was a sleepy little port city you had to visit before heading over to Koh Rong as it's Cambodia's only deep water port. In fact, this town that was only built in the 1960's had some pretty decent beaches of it's own( Otres Beach was lovely) and was a laid back tourist spot.
Not the fanciest of places, Cambodia is still developing of course - but it felt like this town could become a bit akin to Phuket in the future. The combo of Snooky (as tourists called it) and Koh Rong had the potential to make this location into a prime spot for Cambodia tourism.
Not anymore.
With massive Chinese investment and construction, Sihanoukville is unrecognizable compared to even what it was in 2014.
A plethora of casinos, gangs of Chinese, drugs, muddy streets, trash, sewage and pure construction chaos, this video is a glimpse into what Sihanoukville Cambodia was like in October of 2019.
Again, I have no issue with China or Chinese people. All countries including my own do this. This video is designed to time capsule the shocking change underway in Cambodia.
I hope that this is just a transition.

Cambodian town of Sihanoukville scarred by Chinese influence

Cambodia is increasingly looking away from the West and more towards China as it seeks partners in its economic development. Nowhere is this more evident than in the southern seaside town of Sihanoukville. Once famed for its beautiful beaches, the town has been dramatically changed by massive construction projects including many hotels and casinos. Much of the change comes as a result of the growing influence of Chinese nationals, who have reshaped the town and surrounding province with their investment and very presence. While some locals have benefited from the Chinese influx, many others say they are being left behind.

WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID SIHANOUKVILLE IN 2019 & BEYOND | Cambodia | Vlog 028
In this video we take you through our 4 day experience of Sihanoukville and in particular, Otres beach on the south coast of Cambodia.
To say we had a terrible experience (Jan 2019) would be putting it lightly and we do not want to sugar coat our experiences. We talk about the huge increase in construction and the many other reasons which contributed to our awful stay. All in all, we do not recommend it to anyone as a beach destination or anything else for that matter...
Where we stayed: Jin in Otres village

Nightlife in Sihanoukville - Cambodia
Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. There is quite a bit of nightlife in town especially in and around Ekareach Street and the port and beaches. Then there is the Angkor Arms and nearby Small World along with a couple of other expat-run bars.

The Sour Side to Sihanoukville, Cambodia
This Episode:
Episode 59: We see the ugly side to Sihanoukville - SO much garbage! We explore Otres Beach, Serendipity Walking Street and Ochheuteal Beach. Otres Beach is definitely the better of the two. I would skip Occheuteal all together if I were you! Then, unfortunately, we have to leave the camera behind as we check out the casinos.
Thanks so much for watching guys! :)

My name is Kevin Cook. I'm originally from Dallas, TX, but I've been living and traveling in Asia since 2013.
After graduating from university in 2011 and working a few unfulfilling jobs, I saved enough money to move to Asia and work as a teacher for a few years. That opportunity allowed me to travel around and experience new foods and cultures, and ignited a passion for blogging and making videos.
Now I travel full-time and make videos with the goal that I can encourage YOU to pursue your own dream of overseas traveling and living.

Sihanoukville-Cambodia:
Otres Beach- A lost backpacker paradise (27 July 2019)
Sihanoukville (known by locals as ‘Kampong Som’ and by travellers as ‘Stuckville’ or ‘Sinville’) used to be a real favourite on the backpacker trail of Southeast Asia.
In particular, the much celebrated Otres Beach was a place where backpackers would plan to spend a few days and end up whiling away weeks. The cheap marijuana probably had something to do with it, as well as the super cheap backpacker beach huts, food and relatively empty beaches. However, today, Otres Beach and the whole of Sihanoukville caters to an entirely different type of tourist.
Read on for the best places to stay in Otres Beach in 2018, where to AVOID & how to make the most of your stay in Sihanoukville!
Don’t Forget! For more advice and tips on backpacking Cambodia, check out our awesome Cambodia Travel Guide!
Sihanoukville – What Happened?
Sihanoukville has undergone some serious changes in the past 5 years. Following recent Chinese investment, huge towering hotels catering to package tourists have been thrown up at a rapid rate and there are monstrous casinos practically every 100 metres.
Gone are the days of bamboo bungalows and cheap bars, the brand new restaurants and hotels serve only rich tourists who flock to spend money on expensive meals and gambling. The budget backpacker accommodation of old is becoming rare and fewer and fewer independent travellers are choosing to stop here. The scene is entirely different than it was just a few years ago and along with the changes, prices have tripled.
What’s more… the environment has suffered greatly at the hands of the globalisation. Sihanoukville’s once beautiful beaches are strewn with litter and piles of plastic are building up at the water’s edge. It’s a sorry scene and a sad one for anyone who knew the Sihanoukville of old.
The message is clear, landscapes and towns in Southeast Asia change fast, so see them while you can!

Cambodia's Casino Gamble | 101 East
A Chinese casino empire to rival Macau is investing big in Cambodia, transforming a once-sleepy seaside town into a hub for gangsters and shady operators.
Tens of thousands of Chinese workers have moved to Sihanoukville, many working in the backrooms of hastily built casinos or labouring night and day on construction sites.
As soaring skyscrapers fill the horizon, the Cambodian government is welcoming the massive cash injection with open arms.
But as homes are demolished and roads collapse under the weight of construction, resentment among locals is growing.
101 East investigates the underworld figures cashing in on Cambodia’s casino boom.

Small Steps: Sihanoukville, Cambodia
This film documents Small Steps returning to the dump site in Phnom Penh, which was visited a year earlier. It shows the consequence of closing an inhabited dump, and the positive effect this can have. It shows how Small Steps helped those who were left behind.
The film also introduces a new inhabited dump four hours from Phnom Penh in the tourist town of Sihanoukville, where Small Steps distributed vital aid to the families living there.
Sihanoukville Cambodia 2019 - Independence Beach & Hotel #6
After leaving Koh Rong, we get the ferry back to Sihanoukville in Cambodia. We had heard several reports of Sihanoukville no longer being a quiet town, but being a vast construction site with many Chinese Casinos and Hotels being built, so we decided to stay on the outskirts of the city, arround 5km away, on Independence Beach, and stay in the Independence Hotel.
The Hotel is made up of a main building and also some pine lodges which is what we stayed in. Independence beach is located around the headland from the hotels infinity pool, and offered an escape from all the construction work going on in Sihanoukville.
