Flooding Hits New Zealand
The North Island of New Zealand is experiencing severe flooding today. The island received more than two months of rain in less than two days.
Floodwaters are rising and have already cut off some communities. Residents have been warned to stay indoors. The waters have also saturated farmland and are causing major damage to the area.
There will be well over millions of dollars that's gone down the drain today, said local farmer Ben Smith.
More rain is forecasted for the already-flooded areas.
God says He uses His power over the weather to correct nations and turn people to obedience. For more information about why we experience weather problems, read our booklet Why 'Natural' Disasters?

Feilding Steam Rail's Diesel Excursion to National Park 9APR17
A bright sunny day loomed for this well attended excursion from Feilding to National Park and return. The further north we got, the more cloud there was, however the temperature was mild and conditions were favourable for filming.... ie no wind.
A KiwiRail Class DC hauled the classic coaches from Feilding Steam, slowing down for viaducts, points of interest and track workers (working on a Sunday).
Upon arrival at National Park, the consist was placed on the C track and the loco uncoupled. This then went to Ohakune running long hood forward where it was turned on the turntable and returned back to pick up the coaches. I can only assume that this occurred as I didn't hang around long enough.

Ab663's Return Run Along The Castlecliff Industrial Line
Castlecliff, New Zealand.
Ab 663 (normally based at the 'Mainline Steam' depot in Plimmerton) visited Wanganui for the weekend with a trainset borrowed from 'Fielding Steam & Rail'. While in Wanganui, it ran three short excursion trips for locals. One of these trips was on the Castlecliff Industrial Line.
This video was filmed from the open platform of the guards van trailing behind the excursion consist. The Journey was from a Castlecliff container yard at 'Molten Metals' to the 'Wanganui Freight Yard', a distance of just over 4 km.
The locomotive's presence in the town created much excitement for everyone.
Normally the Castlecliff line is used by plain looking container trains hauled by diesel-electric locomotives. So it was a thrilling sight to see a steam locomotive and some passenger cars on this recently reopened branch line.
The line is made up of light 55 pound rail in some places with heavier 70 & 85 pound rail on some of the curves. There is an overall speed restriction of 25 km/hr in place. In addition there were three 10 km/hr temporary speed restrictions in place when this video was filmed.
Ab 663 probably represents the heaviest preserved steam locomotive allowed on the line.
There were some notable firsts achieved with the train in this video;
-This is the first excursion train on the branch since Easter 1993. (on that occasion Dc 4369 was accompaning the old 'Capital Connection' set)
-This is the first steam locomotive to travel this branch since F 163 was in town in November 1990.
-This was the first excursion on this line since the line's rehabilitation in 2011. (The line had been mothballed since 2002.
-BUT the big piece of news that was on everybody's lips today, was that this was the first visit by an 'Ab' Class Pacific locomotive on the Castlecliff line since about 1966.
The roads were clogged with heaps of people keeping pace with the train. It was Wanganui's version of a rush hour. (In this town, rush hour only occurs when a steam locomotive visits).
Today's visit by 663 was an experience to remember.
Feilding & District Steam Rail Society Open Weekend 2014
(New Zealand) Fielding Steam Rail had their rail heritage collection on display and were operating their tank engines and offering jigger rides to happy visitors over the weekend of the 8th & 9th of November 2014.
While the Fielding group run regular excursions out on the mainline, it has been a few years since they had held an operating display on this scale at their home base.
Access was provided to almost all of the groups rolling stock collection and some of the building spaces contained photographic displays. Volunteer members were running refreshment stalls.
Little saddle tank F 163 was powering two cars up and down the Fielding yard. Its trips began and finished in the museum compound at the former Taonui station building. When 163 was stabled 'at Taonui' it was the turn of big side-tanker Wab 794 to occupy the yard running up and down the tracks giving visitors a footplate experience.
X 442 is the last of her class in NZ and visitors had the opportunity to climb into the cab of this interesting loco.
A three jigger trolley set was using another of the yard's sidings. Here on offer was the neat thrill of sprinting along the line, parallel pacing with preserved steam locomotives!
Riding Behind Ab 663 On The Castlecliff Industrial Line
(New Zealand) An 'Ab' class steam locomotive ventures along the Castlecliff Line, the first Ab to do so since 1966.
Ab 663 (normally based at the 'Mainline Steam' depot in Plimmerton) visited Wanganui for a Paddles & Steam weekend with a trainset borrowed from 'Fielding Steam & Rail'. While in Wanganui, it ran three short excursion trips for locals including a trip on the Castlecliff Industrial Line.
This video was filmed from the open platform of the guards van behind the tender of the locomotive as the train travelled from the Wanganui Freight Yard to a loop at 'Molten Metals' a distance of just over 4 km.
(It was a joke among the locals that 663 was off to the scrap yard!)
The locomotive's presence in the town created much excitement.
Normally the Castlecliff line is used by plain looking container trains hauled by diesel-electric locomotives. So it was a thrilling sight to see a steam locomotive and some passenger cars on this recently reopened branch line.
Many people lined their home's front porches and driveways to witness something completely different passby through their suburb.
The line is made up of light 57 pound rail in some places with heavier 70 & 85 pound rail on some of the curves. There is an overall speed restriction of 25 km/hr in place.
Ab 663 represents the heaviest steam locomotive class to have worked on the line in the age of steam.
There were some notable firsts achieved with the train in this video;
-This is the first excursion train on the branch since Easter 1993. (on that occasion Dc 4369 was accompaning the old 'Capital Connection' set)
-Ab 663 is the first steam locomotive to travel this branch since F 163 was in town in November 1990.

-BUT the big piece of news that was on everybody's lips today, was that this was the first visit by an 'Ab' Class Pacific locomotive on the Castlecliff line since about 1966.
The roads were busy with heaps of public finding vantage points along the line to enjoy the simple past time of watching a train roll by. A younger generation happily held their iphone cameras towards the steam visitor.
Today's visit by 663 was an experience to remember and was history in the making.
Ja 1271 Visits The Castlecliff Industrial Line
Steam Incorporated's Ja1271 headed an excursion train from Paekakariki to Wanganui. Included in the days schedule was a side trip along the Castlecliff Branch. This was part of the country-wide celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of New Zealand's railways.
This was the first time a member of the 'Ja' class had been to Castlecliff.
Upon arrival at Wanganui, the passengers disembarked to be bussed to local attractions like the town's PS Waimarie. The locomotive was then watered, coaled and turned before hauling the train tender-first on the short trip to Castlecliff along the industrial branch. This gave local Wanganui people a chance to experience a low-cost heritage train trip through their town's suburbs. The train was dubbed 'The Castlecliff Express'!
The train made the 15 minute trip to Molten Metals on Gilbert St with ease and the task of running the locomotive around the train for the return journey was completed quickly at about 3pm. In this short time, about 2 kilometres back along the line, a car had crashed and rolled on to the railway tracks.
The train was allowed to creep along the tracks up to where the car was laying and passed the scene after a 30 minute delay.
It was fortunate that there were not people standing trackside when the car crash occurred.
Local residence and rail photographers from out of town all vied for trackside vantage points to photograph the train from.

F163 Struggles Through Fordell Tunnel (1998)
Video footage Grant Carter & Zane Gracie.
Filmed on VHS on New Zealand's Marton to New Plymouth Railway.
F 163 was steaming poorly when it headed a three car Easter Sunday excursion train from Palmerston North to Wanganui. The excursion departed Palmerston North at 830am. Early into the journey, there were some delays at a few places while the crew tried to obtain a better head of steam.
On a couple of the gradients between Fielding and Marton Junction, the excursion was close to coming to a complete standstill.
At Marton Junction, the locomotive's smoke box door was opened to reveal a build up of ash. Passengers were surprised at the amount of ash for such a little loco on such a short run.
The 1459 metre Fordell Tunnel in this video was passed through at midday.
In the tunnel, the train was noticeably slowing and the cars were filing with smoke, to the point that the lighting was dimming. So for the passengers on board, there was a sense of relief when the cars emerged into daylight.
In this video, a stop was made to clear the cars of smoke and the passengers disembarked to get some fresh air and to snap some photos of the tall column of coal smoke emitting from the tunnel portal. No doubt the loco crew utilized the stop to work on keeping the steam pressure up.
From this portal, the Marton - New Plymouth line exits into the Whanganui River catchment, and it is a gentle down hill run through the Matarawa Valley to the East Town yard (except for one small upgrade along the way).
F163 was turned in the Wanganui freight yards and the train proceeded back to East Town where a BBQ lunch was held for the passengers.
Leaving again on the return journey to Palmerston North at 230pm, the Fordell tunnel was passed through with no problems.
But later, F163 continued to steam poorly, and the train took hours to get to Marton, sometimes stopping every few kilometers to rest!
Palmerston North was reached well after dark.
A great day out never-the-less. How much was a ticket for the whole experience you ask?
Answer: Only NZ$9 for an Adult Fare!
F163 was built by 'Dubs & Co' of Glasgow Scotland in 1880. It was withdrawn from NZR service on the Lyttelton Wharves in 1964. Today it is NZ's oldest locomotive allowed out on the mainline.
For more infomation about F163, there is an excellent article in the March 2000 'New Zealand Railfan' Magazine (Volume 6, Number 2).
Included is a photograph of this excursion exiting the tunnel and a short note recording how F163 almost stalled in the 1459 metre long Fordell Tunnel
