A LOOK INSIDE UNITED NATIONS COMPOUND IN NAIROBI KENYA
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is one of four major United Nations office sites[a] where numerous different UN agencies have a joint presence. Established in 1996, it is the UN's headquarters in Africa
he complex of buildings is located next to the Karura Forest in the Gigiri district of Nairobi, along United Nations Avenue. It stands across the street from the US Embassy in Kenya.
The UN complex contains a 'green' building, a completely energy and carbon-neutral building, housing UNEP and UN-Habitat offices.[4][5] The building is the first of its kind in Africa, recycling water and using natural light to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. In addition, the building is designed to use natural flow of air as a substitute to air conditioning, and it contains solar panels to generate all the energy that the building might consume.[6] It was opened on 31 March 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki.[7]
Burned Trees, a series of sculptures designed by Monegasque artist Philippe Pastor aimed at drawing attention to forest conflagrations, has been exhibited continuously at the office since 2006.
he office complex can also be visited by the public, in the form of pre-booked, guided tours, provided by the UN Visitors' Service of Nairobi. Anyone interested has the opportunity to book a tour, during which one can learn about the history and work of the UN, while also getting an opportunity to see the offices, including the above mentioned green building. Tours are available during office hours each day, in various languages (e.g. English, Chinese, German, French, Kiswahili).

The public announcement which was issued today and the warden announcement which was put out yesterday in Kenya refers to a anonymous warning that detailed terrorist threats aimed at American and Western interests in downtown Nairobi and specifically mentioned the Stanley Hotel and the Hilton Hotel. The threat also said, the anonymous warning also said that the timing of the threat was for the next several days. So given that specificity it was incumbent upon us to take the steps that we took.

That warden message was issued by the US embassy and US consulates in Saudi Arabia. It outlined continuing concerns about the current security situation in Saudi Arabia and noted particularly housing compounds in the Riyadh area. The warden message cited recent confirmed information that indicated that the Seder Village housing compound in Riyadh has been under active surveillance by terrorist elements and that other Western compounds within the kingdom may also be targetted. In response to this information the US embassy has restricted its American employees independence from visiting housing compounds in the Riyadh areas.

STORYLINE:
A Barclays Bank building in downtown Nairobi was evacuated at midday on Tuesday after the KLM airline office received a phone call saying there was a bomb in the building, according to the head of security for the building.
Kenyan police deployed their paramilitary General Service Unit to both hotels and the bank buildings to oversee the evacuation.
The building used to house the United States (US) Embassy public affairs office until this year.
A second Barclays' branch office in downtown Nairobi was later evacuated when the manager received a similar threat.
Earlier in the day, the US Embassy warned American citizens of a potential terrorist attack on two hotels in downtown Nairobi.
A statement issued by the embassy said that the US government recently received an anonymous warning detailing terrorist threats aimed at American and western interests in downtown Nairobi... the timing of the threat is within the next several days.
Although the information has not been corroborated... it was released in the interest of public safety, the statement said.
The US State Department issued an advisory to American citizens on Tuesday warning them of a suspected terrorist attack being planned for this week.
United Nations security officials also warned employees against visiting the downtown area on Tuesday or Wednesday.
In Saudi Arabia, a US Embassy spokesperson told The Associated Press by phone on Tuesday that the Seder Village compound in Riyadh has been under active surveillance by terrorists and that other housing complexes may also be targeted.
Al-Qaida has twice struck the East African country and there are indications a third attack is being planned.

Digital Payments in Kenya - Bringing down the Cost - FSD Kenya
We sat down with the Head of Future Financial Systems at FSD Kenya, Victor Malu, and the Head of Digital Innovations, FSD Kenya, Tamara Cook, to discuss financial inclusion and the cost of such inclusion.
According to FSD Kenya, informal finance is incredibly important. Even for those in the formal finance space, a majority still use informal finance, and as a result, it becomes incredibly important to have an affordable and useful informal space.
According to Tamara Cook, Head of Digital Innovations, FSD Kenya, making transactions exceptionally cheap is key to any financial product uptake.
In an interview with BitcoinKE, Tamara said:
For things to be daily relevant, they've got to be super cheap. In our financial diaries research where we looked at the financial flows of Kenyan households, we see that the average Kenyan transaction size is under a hundred shillings.
