Coast Guard celebrates 225th anniversary in New London
What better place, several officials said Tuesday afternoon, to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Coast Guard than in this city, home to several Coast Guard commands, the Coast Guard Academy and the planned National Coast Guard Museum.
City Pier was flooded with Coast Guard supporters Tuesday as local, state and military officials gatherered to honor the founding of the Revenue Cutter Service. Among the speakers were Rep. Joe Courtney, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, Commander Kurt Stronach executive officer of Naval Submarine Base New London, and Rear Adm. James E. Rendon, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD BARQUE EAGLE
America's Tall Ship The United States Coast Guard Barque Eagle photographed in the historic port of New London Connecticut marks the 225th Anniversary of the Coast Guard. The USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) (formerly the SSS Horst Wessel) is a 295-foot (90 m) barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. She is the only active commissioned sailing vessel, and one of only two commissioned sailing vessels along with the USS Constitution, in American military service. She is the seventh Coast Guard cutter to bear the name in a line dating back to 1792, including the Revenue Cutter Eagle, which famously fought the British man-of-war Dispatch during the War of 1812. Each summer, Eagle deploys with cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School for periods ranging from a week to two months. These voyages fulfill multiple roles; the primary mission is training the cadets and officer candidates, but the ship also performs a public relations role for the Coast Guard and America. Often, Eagle makes calls at foreign ports as a goodwill ambassador.
Built as the German training vessel Horst Wessel in 1936, it served to train German sailors in sail techniques until decommissioned at the start of World War II. Given anti-aircraft armament, it was re-commissioned in 1942. At the end of the war, Horst Wessel was taken by the US as war reparations.
Length at waterline 231 ft.
Height of maintrunk 147.3 ft.
Speed under sail 17 knots

The film opens with shots of wrecked ships. An illustration shows the warship Constitution, the ship’s captains Edward Preble, Isaac Hull, and William Bainbridge. There are illustrations of the ship in combat, and old photographs show the ship as it is being restored. Footage shows the restored vessel at its home in the Navy Shipyard in Boston (1:40). Next, the film shows the USS Niagara (02:08), the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry. Footage shows the ship’s canons on the deck as it is docked at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA. Viewers see the leftover wreckage of the USS Cairo (02:55). Photographs show the Civil War-era ship, and the remains of the ship after it was raised from the Yazoo River. Next, the film covers the cruiser USS Olympia (03:24). Illustrations show Commodore George Dewey and the ship as it fights in Manila Bay. The next ship showcased in the film is the USS Texas (03:54), which is shown sails at sea as part of the British Grand Fleet during WWI. USS Cairo was one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Cairo was the lead ship of the City-class gunboats and named for Cairo, Illinois.
USS Olympia (C-6/CA-15/CL-15/IX-40) is a protected cruiser that saw service in the United States Navy from her commissioning in 1895 until 1922. This vessel became famous as the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War in 1898.

USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy. Built under the Washington Treaty system, North Carolina's design was limited in displacement and armament, though the United States used a clause in the Second London Naval Treaty to increase the main battery from the original armament of nine 14-inch (360 mm) guns to nine 16 in (410 mm) guns.
USS Missouri (BB-63) (Mighty Mo or Big Mo) is an Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri. Texas Chemical Spills Keep Coast Guard And EPA Busy
Authorities said the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency are working with Texas state regulators to clean up oil and chemicals spilled from a dozen industrial facilities after flooding from Hurricane Harvey.
The spills came from oil refineries, fuel terminals and other businesses. EPA spokeswoman Terri White, though, said it was not possible to provide an estimate for the amounts spilled.
White said, “Some spills were already being cleaned up by the time EPA or other officials arrived to assess them and others had already migrated offsite.”

Trump Praises Coast Guard on Thanksgiving Visit
(23 Nov 2017) President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited a Coast Guard station in Riviera Beach, Florida, where they passed out food.
Trump praised the Coast Guard for its work in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
He said, There's no brand that went up more than the Coast Guard.
He also talked about U.S weapons, saying he tries to make sure that the military equipment the U.S. sells abroad is not quite as good as what the country keeps at home.
I always say, make ours a little bit better. ... Keep about 10 percent in the bag. That apparently extends to material sold to allies. Trump said, You never know about an ally. An ally can turn.
Trump is spending Thanksgiving at his private club in Palm Beach, Florida.
