The first major religion to come into SouthEast Asia was Hinduism. The ancient Hindu religion has many gods and originated in India. Hindu gods include Vishnu, the supreme god and preserver of the universe, and Shiva, god of destruction and regeneration. Over the centuries, worshippers began to choose to follow only one of the many Hindu gods.
Reincarnation is a key Hindu belief. Hindus believe that a soul exists in each living thing and that performing religious duties and living a moral life leads to being born into a higher class in the next life. Hindus see their goal as the achievement of spiritual joy by eventually being united with Brahma, the universal spirit.
Ankor Wat
Jayavarman II established four capitals for his kingdom. Th e most important of these would be Hariharalaya (now called Roluos) on the northern shore of Tonle Sap (near the modern city of Siem Reap). He used wars, alliances and marriages to expand the area under his control. He built several Hindu temples. These and the temples built by his successors served as the mausoleums of the Khmer kings when they died.
Jayavarman II’s successors went on building temples and expanding the empire. Yasovarman I (who ruled from 889 to 900) onstructed a new capital called Yasodharapura and a gigantic reservoir measuring 7.5 kilometres by 1.8 kilometres in the Angkor area. In 953, Rajendravarman II (944–968) built a series of temples at Angkor, and during his reign the Khmers had their first war with Champa. Under his son, Jayavarman V (968–1001), the Khmer court became a centre for scholars and artists.
Suryavarman II
Th e decades after Jayavarman V’s death were years of fi erce power struggles among the Khmer ruling class in which kings were overthrown by their rivals. According to a Khmer inscription, Suryavarman II (1113–1150) came to power after killing a rival prince in a battle fought on war elephants. He extended the Khmer Empire by conquering Haripunchai and south-western
Thailand up to the border with Bagan. In the east and north he took several provinces of Champa and expanded north to the present southern border of Laos. Such expansion did not necessarily mean direct Khmer rule. In many places it was simply a matter of local rulers acknowledging the Khmer king as their overlord.
Suryavarman II also commenced the construction of the greatest of all the Khmer temples, Angkor Wat. It was built in just 37 years and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. After Suryavarman II’s death, the Cham invaded the Khmer Empire in 1177, rowing up the Mekong River and across Tonle Sap (near the modern city of Siem Reap) in war canoes. They sacked the Khmer capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman.
SIEM REAP | CAMBODIA | TRAVEL 2018
Me and my wife went on a little adventure across three different countries. Booked a one way ticket into Saigon and an exit from Bangkok. In-between the countries we took a bus from Saigon to Siem Reap, and from Siem Reap to Bangkok. It was fun and amazing adventure and I hope more will come. Here is our trip exploring the beautiful temples of Angkor.

Cambodian Traditional Music Outside An Ancient Temple in Siem Reap
Listening to traditional local folk music behind an ancient 10th century Hindu temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The group sells music cds of their songs after finishing playing that raise money for victims of landmines from the war in the 1970's. I listened to one song and bought a cd for a 40,000 reals (10 USD) to support their noble cause. Later on, I ran into a similar band at another temple where the members were blind and amputees. Amazing courage and talent!

Yoga for a Cause
Did you know that every time you get on the mat at Nataraj yoga studio you are contributing towards yoga lessons for disadvantaged Cambodian children and adolescents? The Nataraj Yoga Studio (including the lessons held at Samata Spa) generates funds for Krama Yoga NGO, Cambodia's only yoga NGO, with 100% of profits from the public classes used for developing Cambodian yoga teaching capacity and enabling new yoga outreach projects for children, teens and young adults.
Krama Yoga NGO works with partners including NGOs, orphanages and rehabilitation centres to provide regular yoga classes to over 300 young people every month. Many of these children and adolescents have been challenged by poverty, abuse, addictions or lack of familial support. Practicing yoga and developing life skills through the practice contributes to building their self-confidence and self-respect, teaches empathy and compassion, and improves their overall well-being.
Krama Yoga is run by our Cambodian team - Vannac, Piseth, Nich, Liya, Dara, Lita, Phary and Kim Ly -- all of whom have changed their lives with yoga and now provide yoga, philosophy and meditation classes for other young Cambodians who otherwise would not have the opportunity. And as a student at Nataraj studio you are part of this growing yoga community! We are always looking for imaginative ways to fundraise or for volunteers who can help our team. If you are interested to be more involved, please contact Vannac or Piseth and let us know your ideas.

Special Thanks to: Steve Moorish and SISHA, the Transitions Global staff, and especially Chang Liya for her courage and her voice.
This video was shot in late 2010 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to tell the updated story of Chang Liya. Liya had done an early video in 2008, which was too emotionally heavy for public viewing. Since she first told her story in 2008, Liya has become a fully certified yoga instructor and has been to the United States, where she had the opportunity to speak to audiences about her journey in New York, Florida, Colorado, and Ohio.
This video also captured the core principles that have made the Transitions Global program such a huge success.

What does it mean to be Cambodian?
As one of my independent projects(for class) I interviewed a mixture of younger and older generation Khmers living in the United States. I asked my interviewees how they would describe being Cambodian? Also if younger Khmers living in the U.S are considered being Khmer? Many do not know or follow Khmer traditions/customs.
This is my interview with a local Wisconsin Monk. It was a bit intimidating interviewing the monk because I had a bad experience talking to a monk before hand (he was a bit grouchy). I was afraid I would use the wrong terms when talking to a monk also but everything went well.
Would you agree or disagree with what the monk's statement?
