Sankt Hans Bonfire in Denmark
In Denmark, the solstitial celebration is called Sankt Hans aften (St. John's Eve). It was an official holiday until 1770, and in accordance with the Danish tradition of celebrating a holiday on the evening before the actual day, it takes place on the evening of 23 June. It is the day where the medieval wise men and women (the doctors of that time) would gather special herbs that they needed for the rest of the year to cure people.
It has been celebrated since the times of the Vikings by visiting healing water wells and making a large bonfire to ward away evil spirits. Today the water well tradition is gone. Bonfires on the beach, speeches, picnics and songs are traditional, although bonfires are built in many other places where beaches may not be close by. In the 1920s a tradition of putting a witch made of straw and cloth (probably made by the elder women of the family on the bonfire emerged as a remembrance of the church's witch burnings from 1540 to 1693
Sønderborg, Denmark: A New Cruise Destination
This past summer, I had the opportunity to spend a few days in a destination that eagerly wants to welcome your cruise ships.
S?nderborg, Denmark, is a small city with a natural harbor and a variety of attractions to offer your guests. I was fortunate enough to experience some of the activities during my visit.
Large ships will need to drop anchor, but small ships, up to 135 meters, can tie up along the harborfront, which has amazing access to all that S?nderborg has to offer.
As an avid cruiser, I know it is exceptionally rare for ships to dock in a location that puts guests within easy walking distance of an ancient castle, a charming city center and an extended network of hiking and biking trails, but when your ship ties up in S?nderborg, your guests will have access to all of this ? and much more.
S?nderborg Castle is only a few steps away. The castle has not only a fascinating history, which is interpreted in the castle museum, but also a rousing event called the Tilting of the Rings. I know your guests will enjoy the event as much as I did.
If your guests want to stretch their legs, they can step off the ship and onto a nature trail that runs for more than 70 kilometers.
There are also many opportunities for extended shore excursions.
Just 10 minutes away, thereapos;s a historic battlefield where living history exhibits tell a story similar to the American Civil War. Your American guests will recognize the date, 1864, when their country was embroiled in a deadly war. A similar battle was taking place in Denmark, and the story is well-told
Not far from the battlefield is the summer residence of Denmarkapos;s Royal family. When Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik occupy Gr?sten Palace, there is a changing of the guard just like in Copenhagen (although this one is smaller).
If your ship carries families, youapos;ll be pleased to know that there is a theme park called Danfoss Universe less than 45 minutes drive. Although particularly suitable for kids, visitors of all ages will enjoy this fun immersion into physics and natural science.
So where is S?nderborg? Itapos;s near Denmarkapos;s border with Germany so your guests can actually enjoy a visit to two countries on one stop.

Middle Age Graffiti on Limestone Churches/ Djursland/ Denmark
Suggestion: Investigate the outer walls of Djurslands country churces in Denmark for unauthorized middle age graffiti, runes and symbols. If you find any – take a picture, and share it on Facebook. The local limestone Cliffs of Sangstrup were used for church building, opening up for middle age graffiti on the 800 year old soft outer walls.

Universe Gyroskop på Fællesdyreskue i Aabenraa 2013
Universe er begyndt på vores tur rundt i sommerlandet og vi startede ved Fællesdyreskuet i Aabenraa i dag. Der blev taget rigtig godt imod gyroskopet der var et hit!
Spejdernes Lejr 2017 - Sønderborg Kommune - Danfoss med på lejren
Sønderborg Kommune var 22.-30. juli 2017 vært for Spejdernes Lejr med deltagelse af 37.000 spejdere.
20.000 spejdere lærte teknik med kartoffelskiver og Danfoss-bælge
På Spejdernes Lejr byggede spejdere ugen igennem termometre og lommelygter bl.a. med bælge sponsoreret af Danfoss. Den Sønderborg-baserede industrikoncern havde desuden et aktivitetstelt, som også gæster kunne besøge.
Når der er kulde, trækker bælgen sig sammen, og når der er varme, udvider den sig.
Bevægelserne kan få en træpind til at bevæge sig op og ned ad en skala, så man kan aflæse temperaturen. AHA!
Børnene gik til opgaven med stor begejstring og kunne bagefter forklare, hvordan det går for sig.
De var i gang med aktiviteten Rejser på Spejdernes Lejr i Sønderborg. I Rejser skulle alle deltagere mellem 11 og 17 år tilbringe en lærerig dag med aktiviteter, der var opdelt i to spor: Kultur-Spejd og SciSpejd
Danfoss, som har hovedkvarter på Als og er en af Danmarks største virksomheder med over 22.000 medarbejdere i 100 lande, havde leveret bælge til gruppen SciSpejd, hvor deltagerne skulle lære, hvordan en bælg fungerer, og hvad man kan bruge den til.
Der var 20.000 unge, som havde fået mulighed for at udforske naturvidenskaben på SciSpejd, og de kom fra mange forskellige lande. Ligesom spejderbevægelsen sætter spor, satte Rejser spor hos de unge, så nogle af dem måske også i fremtiden får lyst at arbejde med teknologi og naturvidenskab.
Der var også godt gang i aktiviteterne i Danfoss-teltet på Knudepladsen, som alle kunne besøge. Børn fra mange lande deltog i den daglige tegnekonkurrence om at vinde billetter til Universe Science Park på Nordals. Konkurrencen gik ud på at tegne, hvad energi er. I samme telt var der mulighed for at uploade billeder af sine bedste oplevelser og se dem på en stor skærm.
Danfoss bidrog til Spejdernes Lejr på flere måder: Bitten & Mads Clausens Fond var med en donation på 6,6 millioner kroner med til at skabe fundamentet for Spejdernes Lejr 2017 og den videre udvikling af Kær Vestermark, hvor lejren fandt sted.
Blandt andet skulle pengene bruges på sceneområdet og stisystemer, der forbedrer tilgængeligheden til hele området. Det tidligere militære øvelsesterræn ved Sønderborg er et unikt naturlandskab, og det blev fredet i 2016. Spejdernes Lejr var startskuddet til, at områdets ca. 150 hektar udvikles til grønt natur- og fritidsområde.
Scenepladsen, som ligger i den mest robuste del af området, er Danmarks største med plads til 100.000 tilskuere og infrastruktur til store koncertarrangementer.
Derudover var fonden med til at finansiere vartegnet for Spejdernes Lejr 2017: Den enorme støvle på 12 gange 24 meter, der efter lejren skulle fungere som udkigstårn, grillhus og toiletbygning.

We are a couple that lives in a van fulltime. Now we are traveling in south Denmark, North Europe.
We left Copenhagen to explore more quitet and calm coutryside of Denmark. There was a lot of camping forbidden signs, but eventually we managed to find a calm private place to stay over a night in Korsør town, next to the Great Belt Bridge.
Denmark has a lot of fields and animal agriculture, the land is very flat and the roads are narrow and curvy. The sights are very beautiful in country side! Also it seems everywhere you go in Denmark it always winds A LOT.
Boondocking in Denmark is quite easy when you go several kilometres off the freeways. There is even white sandy beaches you can drive your vehicle if you want to. Denmark also has a lot of camping places if you need any RV services.

Danfoss Universe Der Science- und Erlebnispark für die ganze Familie
Die in Nordborg beheimatete Danfoss-Gruppe bietet mit ihrem spektakulären Freizeit- und Erlebnispark Familien, Urlaubern und Schulklassen ein besonderes Highlight in der spriessenden Parkwelt. Wissen und Bildung werden hier in einzigartiger Weise mit Spaß und Spannung vereint. Unweit der dänisch-deutschen Grenze, etwas nördlich von Sønderborg auf der Insel Als präsentiert Danfoss Universe seit 2008 die erste Segwaybahn Europas für Jedermann. Der von der Expo 2000 bekannte isländische Pavillon wurde in eine beeindruckende Welt der Naturgewalten verwandelt.
