Egypt's Rod al-Farag Axis Bridge set a Guinness record for being the world's widest suspension bridge at a width of 67.3 metres (220 feet), in Cairo on Wednesday.
The bridge, one of the largest strategic projects passing over the Nile River, connects northern and eastern areas of the capital with the west of the city, thus easing traffic and reducing commuting time for residents. The total length of the bridge is 16.7 kilometers (10.4 miles), divided into five parts.
The project was reportedly carried out by the Arab Contractors Company, under the supervision of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority. As many as 4,000 engineers, technicians and workers contributed to the construction of the bridge.
During the ceremony, Regional Director of Guinness World Records in Middle East and North Africa, Talal Omar, handed over a certificate to Arab Contractors CEO Mohamed Mohsen Salah.
Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El Sisi attended the opening of the Rod al-Farag Axis Bridge. Presidential Aide for National and Strategic Projects Sherif Ismail, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Kemal Madbouly and Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir were also in attendance, among other officials.

Non-tourist Egypt. Bridge between Asia and Africa You Won't Believe!!!
Non-tourist Egypt. Bridge between Asia and Africa You Won't Believe!!!
Kirill Moiseev visited a small Egyptian village of Al-Kantar, 130 km from Cairo, which houses the only bridge across the Suez Canal.
On July 10, I visited a small Egyptian village of Al-Kantar 130 km from Cairo, which is remarkable for the fact that there is a single bridge across the Suez Canal connecting the continents of Eurasia and Africa and until recently was the highest cable-stayed bridge in the world. Here the point, which is a kind of boundary between the two continents.
Let's look at non-tourist Egypt ...
You can get to Al-Kantar settlement from Cairo from the parking lot of minibuses near the railway station Ramses at the metro station Asch-Shchuhadaa (Martyrs, formerly called Mubarak in honor of the president of the country in 1981-2011 before the Egyptian revolution), Travel at the time of July 2017, 25 pounds (85 rubles) or from the subway station Al-Marg. There is a possibility that Ismailia will take to the city, and from there for 6 pounds (18 rubles) will take the remaining 30 km to the village.
I must say that the Suez Canal zone for Egyptians is a strategic object, so it is not suitable for the embankment (everywhere there will be military posts and patrols of soldiers with the police). Therefore, the bridge was able to shoot from afar.
It is written, This territory is the property of the armed forces, it is prohibited to photograph and approach. In fact, there may be problems. Now I'll tell you everything.
I arrived on the bridge a bit, then tried the tuk-tuk with the driver-boy of 11 years to drive directly to the embankment. The police, seeing me, checked the documents and the camera. Here is such a feature of recent years in the country: if you are taking pictures off the phone - there are no problems, but the camera is here a kind of red rag for law enforcement officers. In general, they unfolded me, the boy brought me back to the place where he sat in his brichka. He went himself to walk and look for a possible point, to better take a picture of the bridge.
In general, the irrigation canal.
Pay attention - a cargo ship sails through the Suez Canal. Why is everything so serious? If you remember, the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 by the Egyptian government during the reign of Gamal Nasser, which turned into an invasion of France, England and Israel. The attack on the country was stopped after the USSR's direct threat to use nuclear missiles to protect the Arab Republic. After the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel swiftly defeated the combined armies of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and swept the Sinai Peninsula and the eastern shore of the Suez Canal with a swift march. After the Judgment Day war of 1973, the Arabs lost to Israel, but the tactical success of the first days of this military conflict reimbursed them moral damage from defeat after the Six-Day War.
Currently, the Suez Canal is one of the main sources of Egypt's income, along with oil production, tourism and agriculture, receiving an annual income from the exploitation of the waterway at $ 5 billion a year with an average of 15,000-17,000 vessels of different displacement.
About 10% of the world's sea traffic passes through the canal and 7% of the world's sea freight turnover. Passage through the channel takes about 14 hours. On average, 48 ships pass through the canal per day.
Observation point, where, naturally, it was impossible to climb. Fortunate that there was no one there. Then I went downstairs and through the market I went to the ferry crossing to that shore to feel what it was like to cross the ferry from Africa to Eurasia. It's a really cool feeling. You can read my old report from Port Said, when in 2009, while studying at Cairo University, I sailed by ferry from one continent to another.
View of the village, not associated with the crossing, could not take a picture, now I will tell.
Interestingly, Al-Kantara is a settlement by status, but its population is 53,000 people.
Now the main difference between Egypt in 2017 from 2008-2009. The widespread distribution of inspection zones through the scanning of all baggage. So I go to a small building of the port, security, seeing me, immediately asked for a passport (they ask documents, by the way, for a third of passengers). Then she checked all the visas, stamps, asked what I was doing here, the purpose of the visit. Then the documents and the camera were handed over to a more serious person. Each picture was checked. They said they had to wait ... an hour passed, another Russian-speaking Egyptian came, started asking me questions about why he went to the channel. Then he said again to wait. They checked the Iraqi visa.

Crossed by the longest river in the world and defined by a fascinating history, loved by some and maybe hated by others, Cairo is a city like no other. The capital of Egipt will redefine the term “chaotic” for you. Because the over 20 million souls that live here are extremely loud and active. The crowd is so dense that you will need at least 4 days to get to know the city.
Although the main reason why tourists want to come here is represented by the antic pyramids, #Cairo has a lot more to offer, and it can turn out a pleasant surprise. Only if you leave the prejudices at home, and you also manage to ease the cultural shock. For example, the city is home to the second oldest university in the world, after the one in Fes, Morocco. Interesting, right?
