Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany ) University Library
The history of the library dates back to the 1300’s, when the university became the owners of several book collections. Over the next centuries, the library was expanded, due largely in part to the assistance from the Prince Electors. Ottheinrich, who reigned from 1556 – 1559, not only left his entire library to the university, he even decreed in his will that at least 50 guilders were to be spent each year in acquisitions for the library. Through continual purchases and bequests, including a donation by Ulrich Flugger of Augsburg, the Bibliotheca Palatina, as it was called, developed into the most important library north of the Alps. This reputation cost Heidelberg its library, when in 1622, during the Thirty Years’ War, the library, by this time containing over 3,500 manuscripts and 13,000 prints, was carried off to Rome.
The library began re-building their collection, but in 1693 it was again destroyed - this time by fire during the War of the Palatinate Succession. Undaunted, the university started over, and by their 400th anniversary, the library had amassed over 12,000 titles. An edict by Prince Elector Karl Friedrich in 1803 once again allowed for the purchasing of books, and by 1832, the library’s size had increased to 120,000 volumes.
By the beginning of the 1900’s, the library had grown its holdings to 400,000 volumes, and by 1905, the library had a new home. It was designed by Joseph Durm from Karlsruhe, and the outside of the building contains many sculptures and paintings.
Through continued purchases and legacies, the library continued to grow, and by 1938, it was one of the largest libraries in the German Reich, containing over 1.15 million volumes. During World War II, parts of the library’s collection were hidden for safe-keeping, but nonetheless, approximately 40,000 volumes were lost.
Today, the library boasts over 3 million books and periodicals, media and manuscripts, split between two branches. Along with the normal functions of a library, the University Library also organizes exhibitions throughout the year.

Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany ) Old Heidelberg University
Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany ) Old Heidelberg University
The Old University building was built between 1712 and 1728 on behalf of elector Johann Wilhelm and was called “Domus Wilhelmiana” in his honour. The Old University houses the Rector’s Office as well as the university museum, which was established in 1996. The historic student prison (Studentenkarzer) is located in the back of the Old University.
The Great Hall, Heidelberg University’s magnificent historic auditorium, is located on the first floor. Like the rest of the building, the Great Hall was long a home for courses and lectures. Its present design dates back to Josef Durm’s redesign of the auditorium to mark the university’s 500th anniversary in 1886. This redesign features paintings and busts honouring the university’s founders, innovators and benefactors as well as its most important academics from its founding to the 19th century.
Today, the Great Hall is chiefly used for academic ceremonies, though it does also lend its venerable ambience to concerts, lectures and similar celebrations, which attain a special lustre thereby.
The student prison was established in the 1780s and remained in use until 1914. Today it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Heidelberg. From 1823 to 1914 students were incarcerated for offenses such as disturbance of the peace by night and other breaches of the public order.
The university museum, on the ground level of the Old University, offers an exciting tour through the history of Germany’s oldest university. Exhibits, portraits and documents are testimonies for the zeitgeist of the individual epochs, beginning with the founding in 1386 by elector Ruprecht I and running up to the end of the 20th century.

Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest research university. Founded in 1386,The school has also used a combination of research-based teaching and effective doctoral training to become one of Europe’s most respected science schools.
Heidelberg focuses on four broad areas of research: materials and structures; molecular and cellular pattern formation; self-organization and regulation; and global culture.
The school also runs the interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Study and works alongside independent research centers, including the German Cancer Research Center and the Max Planck Institute.
The school’s 30,000 students study and work in 12 different faculties and can choose from 160 different programs. This incredibly wide range of topics of study is unparalleled in Germany, and further enhances the institution’s ability to do interdisciplinary research.
Heidelberg is also plugged into a worldwide collection of over 400 research universities. It is a member of the League of European Research Universities, the Coimbra Group, and the European University Association. The school also has a satellite campus in Latin America and offers courses in various other locations.
Roughly 20 percent of both the student body and the researchers are international. The school is also connected to a staggering 55 Nobel Prizes, as well as numerous other faculty awards.
