University of Coimbra | Vlog Portugal Day 2
Day 2 in Portugal brought me to the riverside academic town of Coimbra. Getting there from Porto was a bit of a trek - with a transfer just outside of Porto followed by another transfer outside of Coimbra at Coimbra B Station. In total it was about 90 minutes. Well worth it once you get here.

Coimbra, Portugal, May 2017
Coimbra is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The third-largest urban centre in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto), it is the largest city of the district of Coimbra, the Centro region and the Baixo Mondego subregion.
Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, are its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain. During the Late Middle Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural centre. This was in large part helped by the establishment the University of Coimbra in 1290, the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. Apart from attracting many European and international students, the university is visited by many tourists for its monuments and history. Its historical buildings were classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2013:.

Coimbra University
Walking from my friends house to the Coimbra University through the old city and up the hill past history that dates back to the Roman times. Coimbra University was established on March 1st in 1290. Coimbra itself dates back well before that. Down the roman toll road, now a pedestrian mall and up the hill through the roman arches and past the cathedral then up up up some more before finding one of the most impressive structures I have ever seen.

Coimbra uma cidade de ruas estreitas, pátios, escadinhas e arcos medievais, Coimbra foi berço de nascimento de seis reis de Portugal e da Primeira Dinastia, assim como da primeira Universidade do País e uma das mais antigas da Europa. No século XII, Coimbra apresentava já uma estrutura urbana, dividida entre a cidade alta, designada por Alta ou Almedina, onde viviam os aristocratas, os clérigos e, mais tarde, os estudantes, e a Baixa, do comércio, do artesanto e dos bairros ribeirinhos. Desde meados do século XVI que a história da cidade passa a girar em torno à história da Universidade de Coimbra, sendo apenas já no século XIX que a cidade se começa a expandir para além do seu casco muralhado, que chega mesmo a desaparecer com as reformas levadas a cabo pelo Marquês de Pombal no final do século XVIII. Estas reformas vão ter grande impacto principalmente na alta da cidade, onde são criadas estruturas como o Jardim Botânico e alguns colégios da Universidade.
