4K 雲仙温泉 雲仙地獄 Unzen Jigoku, Nagasaki Kyushu JAPAN
Unzen-onsen is a hot spring town located in the treasure of nature, Japan's oldest national park. The hot spring has a long history.
Unzen Jigoku high-temperature hot springs and gasses erupt violently from everywhere, and with the strong smell of sulfur, the steamy scenery evokes a vision of hell. There are around 30 geothermal fields, such as “Oito Jigoku”, and “Daikyoukan Jigoku”.
In Buddhist teachings, Jigoku (hell) is where people are punished for their evil deeds that they committed in the past life.
The spring quality of Unzen's hot springs is acidic sulfur springs, with strong acidity. The hot springs can become as hot as 98℃, and the main components are iron ion, aluminum ion, and sulfate ion, and is effective against rheumatism, diabetes, and dermatosis. Furthermore, the gasses that erupt along with violent sounds can go up to temperatures of 120℃. Mostly composed of steam, it is also composed of carbonated gas and hydrogen sulfide gas, and gives off a strong sulfuric smell.

ONSEN UNZEN ONSEN - Japans beautiful Hell!
Onsen : Japanese public bath.I have discovered that Japanese onsen is one of my favorite things to do in Japan. When ever I travel to Japan I try to go to the public baths and discover new ones - all over Japan!. But I think that the experience at this onsen was an unforgettable experience. Which is why I made this video. Unzen Onsen (雲仙温泉) is a hot spring resort town near the peak of Mount Unzen. Not too far from Nagasaki, the area originally developed as a temple town that in its prime was large enough to be compared to Koyasan. In the Meiji Period, the town became one of Japan's first tourist resorts popular among foreigners, and a hint of Western influenced architecture can still be seen about town. Unzen Onsen's location makes it a good base from which to explore Mount Unzen.
The resort is surrounded on several sides by hot spring fields. Also known as hells (jigoku), these barren rocky areas are littered with billowing steam vents and gushing hot springs from which milky, acidic and sulfurous water bubbles straight up out of the ground. The hells were once used to execute Christian rebels after the failed Shimabara Rebellion, but today its spring water has the more pleasant task of warming up holidaymakers in the ryokan baths around town.
I hope you enjoy this multi language video!
Tell me about your onsen experiences!

【Unzen: History and Adventure amid Natural Wonders】
Welcome to Unzen, one of Japan’s first and finest national parks, where a whole host of activities is available to fill your days and nights. Most travelers begin their visit with a stroll around the bubbling, boiling sites of volcanic activity that are warmly referred to by the local people as jigoku, or “hells.” Trailheads that lead to the top of several nearby peaks start in town, or a short drive away, and the routes range from family-friendly strolls and picnic spots to intermediate-level, full-day climbs of rocky summits. Many visitors also choose to soak their cares away by immersing themselves in the “hell”-heated hot spring baths. These can be found in all the local hotels, as well as several quaint public spas, and the mineral-laden hot water is believed to have health benefits and relaxing properties.
Unzen is a location of natural beauty year-round. It is part of the Unzen Volcanic Area UNESCO Global Geopark, centered around a volcano that has been active for half a million years. In the spring, a wide variety of azalea blossoms blanket the mountain slopes in pink, and the Japanese dogwood trees turn the slopes white in early summer. The natural forest means spectacular bursts of color in the fall, and in the winter, the rare phenomenon of rime ice forms on the forest trees, glittering diamond-like in the sunlight.
Unzen has long been a favored destination for visitors since the priest Gyoki established the Manmyoji Temple in 701.
It gained international renown in theMeiji period (1868–1912), when visitors from other parts of Japan and Asia would use the town of Unzen Onsen and its surroundings as a cool highland getaway from the oppressive summer heat.
Today, Unzen continues to appeal to international travelers and Japanese looking for mountain adventures, historical appeal and a very unique, mysterious landscape.
【Climbing Mount Fugen: Unzen’s Highest Accessible Summit】
Climbers who want to make a full day of climbing Mt. Fugen, a moderate to advanced-level hike, should begin in the town of Unzen Onsen. Shorter routes, however, begin at the Nita Pass Unzen Ropeway station (1,080 meters) or at the upper ropeway station on Mt. Myoken (1,300 meters). The highest point on the peninsula, the lava dome from the 1990 eruption, is still off-limits to climbers, but the routes to Mt. Kunimi and Mt. Fugen are open and offer a wide
range of terrain. The trail passes across narrow ridges, through mossy valleys, up and down rugged rocky steps, and past cave openings and the boulder-strewn dome. In some places it could be called “Ghibli World,” for its resemblance to the landscape that appears in the beloved animations of Miyazaki Hayao.
【Broad vistas and volcanic formations】
The weather is very fickle at altitude and the peaks are often swept with banks of fog, hampering visibility, but when clear, the views along the way are spectacular. One highlight is the up-close look at the formidable dome. Keep an eye out also for the stone ruins of buildings that were once connected with lava caves and used for storing silkworm eggs during the Meiji period (1868–1912). Equally fascinating are the many strange volcanic formations and rocks, including “breadcrust bombs”—stones with a cracked surface that were tossed out in the recent eruption. The summit of Mt Fugen, at 1,359 meters, has a number of photogenic rocky outcrops. On a clear day, climbers can experience a panoramic view that extends as far as Mt Aso, sometimes even as far as Mt. Sakurajima, some 140 kilometers away in Kagoshima!
The route that leads from the top of the ropeway to Mt. Fugen and back to the bottom of the ropeway takes between three and four hours.

Mount Unzen 雲仙岳 is an active volcanic group of several overlapping stratovolcanoes, near the city of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyūshū, Japan's southernmost main island.
In 1792, the collapse of one of its several lava domes triggered a megatsunami that killed 14,524 people in Japan's worst-ever volcanic-related disaster. The volcano was most recently active from 1990 to 1995, and a large eruption in 1991 generated a pyroclastic flow that killed 43 people, including three volcanologists.
Currently its highest peaks are Fugen-dake 普賢岳? at 1,359 metres and Heisei-shinzan 平成新山 at 1,486 metres.

Unzen-Jigoku 雲仙地獄,
Unzen Jigoku (“Unzen Hell”) where hot spring water and gases emit out from blowholes. White steam and a smell of sulfur create a hive of volcanic activity. Lots of distribution pipe convey the hot water to the nearby hotels or onsens.
It is a strong acid spring containing sulfur, known for its excellent antiseptic qualities and good for making the skin smooth and soft.
GETTING STEAMY in UNZEN, NAGASAKI
I took a drive up to Nagasaki Prefecture for a weekend. This was day 1 - Unzen. Unzen is a small onsen resort town near Mount Unzen. It is known for nature and hot springs so I checked it out.

Unzen Premuim Night: An Evening with the Stars
Several times throughout the year, the town of Unzen Onsen hosts a program in which local guides lead visitors on an after-hours visit deep into the National Park and up to Nita Pass. For this event, titled Unzen Premium Night, the gates of the winding Nita Pass road are opened and participants are bussed to the ropeway station for a ride in the gondolas up to the peak of Mt. Myoken. The night view from this 1,300-meter peak is astonishing when clear, encompassing the spread of lights from the entire peninsula below and the MilkyWay and other constellations above. Even when the weather is not so cooperative, our guides have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to make the mountain visit a thrilling experience, regardless of the time of year. For availability, check with the tour desks at the hotel or at the visitor center.
