CLOUD FOREST IN MONTEVERDE - COSTA RICA VLOG PART 4
In part four of my Costa Rica vlog series, we travel by bus to Monteverde. This mountain town is well-known for its awesome cloud forests and wildlife sightings. We got to see a sloth up close during another night hike and we explored the tree tops in one of the cloud forests in the region. Monteverde was like no other area we visited in Costa Rica. It felt like stepping into another country for a few days, the climate was different to the rain forest tropics and the mountainous region was as windy as Cape Town! I recommend checking this area out if you're ever visiting Costa Rica.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica (2019) | Must see Costa Rica
Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica (2019) | Must see Costa Rica
One of the things Costa Rica is famous for is it's cloud forests and we couldn't visit Monteverde without spending a day exploring the cloud forest in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Despite being budget travellers sometime we just have to splash out and this is one of those times. A short bus ride from our hostel in Santa Elena we arrived at the cloud forest reserve. We spent the day hiking though the forest and we were not disappointed, great views of the cloud forest, wonderful nature with awesome birds and animals.
The Monteverde cloud forest is definitely one of our must see sites in Costa Rica.

Monteverde Cloud Forest || Costa Rica Rainforest Experience
The Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica is famous for its lush rainforest eco-system, amazing hanging bridge pathways, and exotic animals and insects. To access the protected cloud forest, you must pay access to one of the many 'parks' in the region, and we chose the Selvatura Adventure Park as our entry point.
Join Marti from 'Down the Wrabbit Hole Travel' as she and her little family explore the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest after a long road trip through the interior of Costa Rica. Walk over the hanging bridges, chase hummingbirds, and search for coatimundi among the rainforest in this revamped video.

Cloud Forest - Monteverde, Costa Rica
I took a quick video to show the thickness of the clouds. The city is called Monteverde in Costa Rica. It is very lush rain forest, and the steep hills provide the perfect environment to grow coffee. The hiking trails were very beautiful, however it rained for all but 4 hours of our 2 and a half days there. Other than the rain, the roads to get to Monteverde are horrid; they are barely covered with gravel, very narrow, extremely bumpy, full of pot holes and on the edge of a cliff. The drive up there alone was a car sickening adventure. Unless you are totally granola, I don't know if the near death drive is worth it? However there are some really cool things inMonteverde like the live frog museum (the frog pond), great local food, live butterfly garden, impeccable hiking, good coffee and the infamous zip line.
Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica! [You Need to Come Here!]
We were not sure if it was worth it to go to Monteverde knowing for a fact that it is mostly cloudy, and it receives a lot of rain. However, just on our way there the sights blew us away! We took Interbus from San Jose to Monteverde, and we were so glad we did, as the drive up the mountain wouldn’t have been easy for us at all!
Monteverde, Costa Rica is beautiful! It is so lush, scenic, the air is so fresh and crisp! We only stayed for 2 nights and it surely was not enough. We really wish we stayed at least 2 more nights!
When we arrived, we went to Monteverde Cloud Forest, we were so busy trying to look for wildlife, and we did not find a lot because our eyes aren’t trained to do so! The hike was relaxing, it was like walking in that perfect climate with perfect air freshness, perfect dense healthy cloud forest as our backdrop!
We did lose our drone here ???? It was pretty sad.
Anyway, we hope that you stuck through the end of this video! And we hope that it has encouraged you to go to Monteverde, Costa Rica.
We also highly recommend Rainbow Valley Lodge, as we had such an amazing stay here! The owner Christian really made our stay that homey!

Zip Line at Sky Trek - Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica [2014]
Ziplining on all of the Sky Trek Zip Line cables in the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica.
There are two different Sky Adventure Locations: Monteverde and La Fortuna. This video was taken at the Monteverde location which is located inside the Monteverde Cloud Forest. IMHO, I like the Arenal location better since it has longer and faster zip lines. If you zip line at one course, you get a percentage off for ziplining at their other location.

Costa Rica: Monteverde Cloud Forest - International Living
The Monteverde Cloud Forest - International Living
Just three and a half hours or so northwest of San José, Costa Rica's capital and site of the main international airport, is a unique mountain community. Monteverde, with its main town Santa Elena, is the site of a large protected swath of land, including the cloud forest the area is best known for. This is a type of high-altitude rain forest where the clouds sweep through the trees, leaving a lush, moisture-rich environment. Trees are covered in orchids, moss, and bromeliads. And species like three-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, and the elusive resplendent quetzal make their home here.
It's a great place to visit for hikes in the rain forest, cool nights on the mountain, and stunning vistas. And a close-knit expat community has grown up over the years, including retirees and tourism business owners.
In the video below, International Living Costa Rica Editor Jason Holland explores the cloud forest in Monteverde and meets some local residents on the trail.

Monteverde cloud forest Costa Rica :
Costa Rica is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, having 4% of all the known species of plants and animals in only 0.03% the earth's surface. For instance, there are roughly 9,000 known species of vascular plants in the country and there are certain areas of great floral richness. Perhaps Monteverde is one of the richest regions of plants where there are 3,021 known species including a total of 755 species of trees.
The area of study for the purpose of describing flora and fauna extends from the peaks and crests of the continental divide in Monteverde (1,850 MASL) to 700 MASL of the Pacific and Caribbean gradients. It Includes the Monteverde Biological Reserve, Santa Elena and The Children's Eternal Rainforest (including Bajo del Tigre), part of Arenal Volcano National Park, and private lands in the buffer zones that surround the Monteverde Biological Reserve complex. Nearly all the area of study is within the premontane and low montane altitudinal levels.
The reserve's flora and fauna is characteristic of four (4) life zones according to the map of life zones of Costa Rica (Bolaños, Watson and Tosi, 1999).
1. The premontane rainforest life zone takes up an area of 948 hectares and is located on the Caribbean slope, in the middle of the Peñas Blancas River.
2. The low montane rainforest life zone takes up the greatest amount of land of the reserve (2,180 ha) and it is located on both slopes, on high peaks and crests of the continental divide.
3. Low montane wet forest life zone takes up a small sector of the reserve (341.5 ha). This is the area with the greatest pressure on the resources protected by the reserve, given that this is where the reserve's administration infrastructure and the visitor sites for the thousands of visitors that come every year. Furthermore, this is the area where most of the scientific investigations have taken place during 35 years.
4. Finally, the premontane wet forest life zone is the least represented in the reserve taking up only 174.9 ha. This area is located on the pacific slope. The natural vegetation is an evergreen forest with a few deciduous species and with a variety and moderate abundance of epiphytes.
