spelunking upana caves gold river tahsis british columbia
Come along as we enter the mysterious upana caves on remote vancouver island...just head for the light...
Upana Caves British Columbia | Vancouver Island ( Parks BC )
Upana Caves British Columbia are on Vancouver Island, just outside of Gold River. They are several caves in the area, and all are well marked, and easy to find. The trail is a short, easy walk where you will find four different caves you can explore. There is a small parking lot just before the trail, but if it is full you will find another and toilets further down the logging road.

Nootka Sound, BC (Gold River, Tahsis, Yuquot, Friendly Cove)
This summer we went to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada for a two-week camping trip. We went to Tofino, Hornby Island, Gold River and Tahsis.
This is video 3/3. Check out the rest of the videos in the series:
We stayed at the Seaside RV Campground in Tahsis and the Ridgeview Motor Inn in Gold River, both very pleasant stays.
Unlike Tofino where everyone is packed in like sardines, the Seaside RV Campground - and the general Tahsis area - was relatively free from tourists, had loads of amenities, was right next to the water...Overall it was the most underrated part of the trip and we wished we had spent more time there.
The whole reason why we went to Tahsis in the first place was to visit Nootka Sound. There's a BBC show called Taboo written by and starring Tom Hardy. The show is based around this conflict over who owns the rights to Nootka Sound. Needless to say when we were visiting my cousin on the island, we insisted on seeing the area. And I'm so glad we did, because it was breathtaking.
Things we saw / did:
-Get West Adventure Cruises - Friendly Cove Day Cruise to Nootka Sound
-Upana network of caves (so cool, literally)
-Strathcona Park
-Westview Marina and Lodging has a great margaritaville, where you can sit and watch people clean fish
-Ate onion rings and wings at the Ridge Roadhouse (It was goooood)

Upper Upper Gold River, Vancouver Island, Canada
This is one of two section of the upper Gold River, in Gold River, Vancouver Island, Canada. This is above Monkey Canyon, which is above the normal 'Upper' run. Unfortunately, my GoPro battery died before Monkey Canyon, so I missed the best section on this trip.
I think they call that first drop, the Poop Chute

Upana Caves Tour in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island
A 21 minute video of the trail to Upana Caves and the main cave entrances with signs that visitors can read up on about the entrance and cave beyond. Sorry about the poor lighting but I neglected to bring a head lamp but decided to record anyways. Also as you will see the Upana River that runs through the caves is at it's lowest level in a decade due to the lack of rainfall in 3 months.

Caving - Vancouver Island (Upana Caves)
Here me and my son Dylan explore the Caves of Upana. A great public access set of caves open to the public. Caves cater to all skill levels and offer a variety of options.
Spelunking or Caving
Took a break from turkey hunting to do a little cave exploring. Are we cave explores or spelunkers? You decide.
Upana Cave Adventures - 3 - Self-Guided
The Upana Caves outside of Gold River on Vancouver Island.
Probably the best of the three videos of these caves that we took.
It's hard to see but this cave kind of spiraled down and got smaller and smaller until we hit a part we weren't willing or prepared to continue on through.
Upana Cave Adventures - 1 - Self-Guided
The Upana Caves outside of Gold River on Vancouver Island.
Obviously the videos can't do these awesome caves justice. This video starts about 3/4 of the way through this first cave.
Turns out the 'cave' at the very end of this video was not a cave at all so we turned around and ended up getting slightly lost and confused trying to make our way back to the opening we entered through. Eventually we got to the mouth of the cave and headed down the path through the woods to the next opening..

There’s an underground world of caves on Vancouver Island, and they’re yours to discover - BC
Explorers may have covered off much of what there is to be discovered above the ground. But there’s still plenty to find beneath it. And Vancouver Island is just one place where you can do that. Cover...
