Whiteleaf and Brush Hill virtual walk Tour
Today's Virtual walk tour is Just outside Princes Risborough in Whiteleaf and Brush hill nature reserve. A large area of chalk grassland and woodland on top of the Chilterns escarpment with amazing views and archaeological features. Car park, picnic site, waymarked walks.
Whiteleaf Hill (and nearby Brush Hill) offer good wheelchair access along firm, level paths through woodland which lead to firm grassy areas with viewpoints. A leaflet detailing these walks is available in a separate downloadable leaflet, see below.
The woodlands through from Whiteleaf to Pulpit Hill and beyond are all linked by The Ridgeway National Trail. The Icknield Way Rider’s Route also crosses these woods. Whiteleaf is well placed for beginning extensive off-road cycling trips on woodland bridleways both north and south.
At the top of Whiteleaf Hill is the chalk hill-figure of Whiteleaf Cross and a burial mound. Whiteleaf Cross has dominated the local landscape for several centuries, becoming a cultural focus associated with many aspects of local life. It was first officially noted by Francis Wise in 1742, but its full history is unknown and is the subject of much local speculation and folklore. In addition to the scheduled monuments there are also WW1 practice trenches near the car park.

Cairn Hill Reserve Forest Ooty | Birdwatching, Trekking, Watch Tower, Hanging Bridge Walk
Cairn Hill, Ooty Overview:
Situated in the hill town of Ooty, Cairn Hill is an eco-tourism and a reserved forest site which came into existence in the 1860s and sprawls over a massive area of approx 168 hectares. Considered to be the land of one of the oldest and most massive Cyprus plantations in the Nilgiris, the beautiful natural hotspot is dotted with resorts and hotels offering a tranquil stay owing to its serenity, quietude and ataraxy. The highlight of the spot is a trekking trail in the centre of the attraction, that is a calling for the several tourists, enthusiasts and nature lovers for its solitude and picturesque setting. Undertaking this soulful trek is one of the prime things to do at Cairn Hill. In addition to that, it has a watchtower which can let you enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Known to be a haven for birdwatchers, Cairn Hill also has bird watching facilities and jeep safari activities available for the tourists.
History and Etymology of Cairn Hill:
Cairn Hill came into existence in the 1960s when it was developed as an eco-tourism site by the British. It was demarcated as a reserved forest area and the trekking trail which is at the centre was one of the few original walks enjoyed by the Britishers. The name ‘Cairn Hill’ has been derived from the English word ‘cairn’ which means ‘a mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop’. Originally, the hillock was a prehistoric burial site of the tribals and had a pile of stone accumulated at the top for the same.
Things to Do at Cairn Hill:
1. Birdwatching
Nilgiris is considered the hotspot when it comes to exotic avifauna and bird species. Considered to be a haven for the birdwatchers and nature lovers, the place is a breeding ground and home to some of the most exotic species of the birds which include Amur Falcon, Pied Bushchat, Canary Flycatcher, White Throated Kingfisher, Kestrel, Black and Orange Flycatcher, Crested Serpent Eagle, Indian Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill etc.
2. Trekking
Known to be a perfect place to trek and hike, the Cairn Hill has a popular trekking trail in the heart of the property which was earlier used as the walking trail by the Britishers. There are several treks conducted across the same route which takes you through a dreamland of dense woods, filtering sunlight, dainty brooks and innumerous flora and fauna. The route followed is Interpretation Centre to Watch Tower to Bird Watching area and back.
3. Watch Tower
The prime objective of the Watch Tower is no doubt to offer beautiful panoramic vistas of the surrounding beauty- the mountains and the emerald forests and a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the valley from the vantage point. However, besides the tourists, it is also used by the management to spot forest fires, animal movements, unnatural activity in the nearby woods, watching birds and nearby attractions like Parsons and Avalanche etc.
3. Safari
Cairn Hill has the facility to book privately in- house vehicles to go on a safari of the area. The safari takes you through routes unexplored where you can admire and adore the magnanimous natural beauty and luscious scenery. Through hills and valleys, woods and meadows, the safari offers views which are truly a visual treat.

The Park - Bedelands Farm Local Nature Reserve
Julia and I are exploring the concept of the park and how it fits into society in a mini series.
Today we are visiting Bedelands Farm Local Nature Reserve near Burgess Hill in West Sussex.
The Nature Reserve consists of ancient meadows, woodland, hedgerows and ponds, covering 33 hextares (80 acres). Since 1994, in consultation with the District Council and the University of Sussex, the Friends group have been surveying the wildlife and keeping records so that a comprehensive management plan can be devised and implemented for the conservation of all the flora and fauna and the public's enjoyment.

Slowing the flow at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve
Cumbria Wildlife Trust has blocked 20 man-made ditches at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve that were draining water from the uplands into Naddles Beck.
The work involved using a digger to build long dams across man made channels, before replacing the vegetation to strengthen the dam.
Side channels were added where possible to divert water from the main ditch so it soaks into the surrounding land, helping to slow the flow of water through the catchment.
The work was possible thanks to grants from WREN via funds donated by FCC Environment to the Landfill Communities Fund, and The Heritage Lottery Fund.

Red Hill Farm
On Memorial Day 2009, Slow Food Russian River organized a lamb and goat roast. Hosted by Rick Theis and Carolyn Johnson at their Sebastopol home, locally-raised animals were roasted in an outdoor wood-fired oven. Special guests on the video include Mary Karlin, Michael Dimmock, Marissa Guggiana, Craig Anderson, Paula Shatkin and LaLoo's ice cream
The lamb was provided by Red Hill Farms in Petaluma CA.
The goats were provided by Salmon Creek Ranch in Bodega Bay CA.
By utilizing local livestock, the event celebrated the small producers who are preserving farmland as well as humanely raising their animals. A delicious afternoon was had by all. We encourage you to support local farmers and ranchers. It makes sense on many levels: taste, carbon footprint, and sustainability.

Horsley the silent hill...
It was one of the best experience i had and made me connect with nature
About the hill::
Horsley Hills or Horsleykonda or Yenugulla Mallamma Konda is a series of hills in Andhra Pradesh in Madanapalle taluka of Chittoor district and is about 9 miles from Madanapalle town. The local name of the hill was Yenugu Mallama Konda after a legend of a saintly old woman named Mallamma who lived atop the hill and was fed by elephants . W.D. Horsley, a British collector, built his home around 1870 after whom it is named. In contrast to the dry and hot surrounding, this area is well vegetated with cooler climate. This made it attractive as a hill station and a tourist spot.#abandenthill#hill#cutebaby#naturelove#itseverydaybro
