Upli Buruj
A watch tower built during Adil Shah's reign ...Upri Burj gives a clear view of miles around Bijapur. There are two cannons at the top. The name Upli Buruj has two different stories behind it. One story is that it was known as Upri Buruj which is supposed to have come from Upar meaning up or high in Hindi. The other is that it's named after an old woman by the name Upli. What ever it is the tower was an important security feature of Bijapur of those days.

Upli Burj or the Hyder Burj, an 80-feet tall tower with two cannons on its roof top, was built by Hyder Khan, the general in Ibrahim Adil Shah and Ali Adil Shah’s army. This centrally located tower stands to the north of Dakhani Idgah in Bijapur in the state of Karnataka. The view from the top of the tower is very interesting as most of the monuments in the city can be more or less viewed from here.

Rayappa Kasi Tombs of Ibrahim Adil Shah Family, Bijapur, India
Ibrahim Rauza Mausoleum is on the outskirts of Bijapur, just 2 km away to be precise. It was built by Ibrahim Adil Shah II for his begum Taj Sultan initially, and is now the resting place for both of them. Bijapur as a destination is a fine example of the Adil Shahi Dynasty and Deccan architecture in its prime. The tomb as well as the adjoining mosque was designed by the Persian architect Malik Sandal; whose grave also rests here in the courtyard.

Jami Masjid - Vijayapur Karnataka India
Ali Adil Shah I built this mosque in 986/1575, which is a finest example of architecture in its more restrained and classical mood. However, it was completed much later. Since it is an early example it has great affinity with the style of Bahmani architecture. But it interprets them in a more sumptuous manner. It is one of the largest mosques of the Deccan and is built on an orthodox plan with an open courtyard, enclosed by a wall.
The sanctuary is on the side. It is a large structure with a rectangular plan. The courtyard is square of 155 feet, each side and on its three sides are superb range of arches. The mosque consists of a large hall. The length of the façade is nine bays or aisles and the depth is five bays. This gives forty-five in the main structure of the mosque. Massive masonry square piers support the vaulted roof. The central dome covers an open space of nine bays. It has one exterior dome. Though each bay, within, has a domical ceiling, these are embedded in the thickness of the flat roof and do not rise above it. The smaller domical ceilings are flat and graceful.
The façade of the mosque does not have minars or kanguras. But these are present around the dome at the upper terrace. Over the façade arches projects a cornice supported by brackets.
On top of the mosque in the middle is a square arched clerestory supporting over it is a large hemispherical dome. It is a crowned by a massive metallic finial with the symbol of a crescent pointing upwards. The architectural style of the dome and its supporting structure resembles the Bahmani style of the architecture at Gulbarga. This mosque is two centuries later than the Bahmani style. Though the Adil Shahi conception in this mosque is based much on the constructional principle but it is more finer with sober and massive elegance of its forms and outlines and is more aesthectic. There are not much architectural ornamentation in this mosque. It is simple and dignified, complete in itself. The central archway is right in front of the central mirhab and is decorated with a foliated motif in colors and the spandrels have circular pattern in colors.
In interior of the mosque, the floor has been marked out in black lines upon its polished plaster into small compartment pointing towards Qibla as musallas or ja-i-namaz (or prayer space). There are 2,250 such compartments in the body of the main mosque. It seems this marking was done later on by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's orders. Aurangzeb also built the gateway of the mosque and extended the courtyard by about ninety feet. Behind the gateway are the upper floor of the eastern end of the mosque and its arches. Some of the unfinished work of the mosque was carried out by Aurangazeb.
