Set in tranquil grounds adjoining a riverside village, this rare example of an Elizabethan artillery fort was begun in 1559 and redeveloped in 1599-1601, to protect warships moored at Chatham dockyards. Despite a brave attempt, it entirely failed to do so in 1667, when the Dutch sailed past it to burn or capture the English fleet at anchor..........

This clip starts with a look down the quaint high street that leads to the Castle & the River Medway.

We then take a quick look around the castle, which at the time had an expedition in place to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Battle of Medway.

The Saxon Shore Way is a long-distance walking path 163 miles from London Gravesend to Hastings The Saxon Shore Way offers the walker an unrivalled diversity of scenery from the wide expanses of marshland of the Thames and Medway estuaries to the majestic White Cliffs of Dover. Spectacular panoramic views follow the route along the escarpment of the old sea cliffs from Folkestone to Rye and from the sandstone cliffs of the High Weald at Hastings. The historian is treated to the Saxon Shore forts built by the Romans at Reculver, Richborough, Dover and Lympne, to the landing place of St. Augustine and of Caesar and to defences of more modem times against Napoleon and Hitler

The Saxon Shore Way passes through two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, numerous Sites of Special Scientific Interest and several Nature Reserves. The route offers walkers an excellent opportunity to explore Kent's history. Saxon Shore way Follow the Saxon Shore Way along Kent's ancient coastline, which in many places is now miles inland. Walkers along the route will find Iron Age hill forts; magnificent churches and an impressive cathedral; Martello towers; historic ports; and castles dating from periods throughout history.

Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, England, Gravesend on the River Thames. These include a Paddle Steamer, Barges, Yachts, Tugs The River is still of great importance to Gravesend today as an operational base for the Port of London Authority

THE Church at Cliffe is dedicated to St. Helen and bears the distinction of being the only church in Kent dedicated to that Saint. It stands in a prominent position at the edge of the Hoo peninsula overlooking the extensive marshes which at this point stretch some two miles to the Thames.

Cooling Castle A short distance to the left along Cooling Road, the path passes the gatehouse of Cooling Castle A little further along the road you can also see the remains of a tower and part of the moat. Continuing along the road, the path reaches St James's Church in Cooling

The Hoo Peninsula, located on the north Kent coast 30 miles east of central London, extends into the Thames Estuary between Gravesend and Rochester. It separating the estuaries of the rivers Thames and Medway. It is dominated by a line of sand and clay hills, surrounded by an extensive area of marshland composed of alluvial silt

St Mary's Island, is part of the Chatham Maritime development area in Medway, South East England. It is located at the northern end of Chatham,from St Mary's Island you can see Lower Upnor across the river. Looking more to the west, you can see Upnor Castle.

Upnor Castle is an Elizabethan artillery fort located on the west bank of the River Medway in Kent. It is in the village of Upnor, opposite and a short distance downriver from the Chatham Dockyard, Situated on the banks of the River Medway, this attractive turreted castle is set in a picturesque village area backed by rolling, wooded hills.

The Rochester bridge was built of iron girders supported on masonry piers, 600 feet in length and weighing 700 tons. The East Kent Railway became the London Chatham and Dover Railway 1 August 1859 and in 1861 the bridge became a part of the newly completed Chatham Main Line from London to Dover

Rochester is a city of great antiquity. There was a settlement of some importance here well before the Roman occupation of Britain in AD43 The Romans almost certainly built the first bridge and fortified the town,

Cathedral is the second oldest earliest cathedral in England after Canterbury.

A Day Trip To Rochester, Kent | ad

Rochester in Kent makes a great wintery day trip, just 45 minutes from central London with Southeastern Railway.

With a beautiful high street lined with historic buildings, Rochester Cathedral and Rochester Castle – one of the best-preserved and finest example of Norman architecture in England, there’s plenty of things to see and do.

It’s also filled with independent stores and hidden gems. There’s Pips of Rochester, a lovely local greengrocers selling local produce, Kiss Kiss Heart and Paloma Studio which sell gorgeous gifts and Dickens House Wine Emporium – a wine store in a building that was once the apothecary where Charles Dickens collected his medicines.

The food scene in Rochester is also pretty special. Topes is the place for the best food in the town, serving gourmet dishes including pigeon, mackerel and sea bream. Fleur De Thé is a cute tea room / gift shop. It’s super photogenic and wow do they make a good cuppa!

Another great hidden gem was Playopolis Board Games Café just around the end of the high street. Opened last year, this family run board game café has over 700 board games, plus they serve fun cocktails too including Butterbeer!

WALKING IN KENT | ROCHESTER TO UPNOR

I was joined by Candice again (it's official, we are now in a relationship lol!) AKA Miss Outdoors! Haha.

This was a 6 mile linear route from the historic town of Rochester on the River Medway in Kent to the equally historic and brilliant towns of Upnor and Lower Upnor, further along the river.

The route actually calls for you retrace your steps back to Rochester, but as we had seen all that already and it would've taken too long (I had work in the evening), we cheated and got a cab back!

Points of interest included the castles in both towns, Rochester cathedral, the Russian Cold War submarine (The Black Widow) moored in the middle of the Medway, a World War II pillbox, a number of fine pubs and the connection with Charles Dickens (he lived and died in Rochester and wrote many of his greatest novels there)!

The Battle of Rochester

On the 15th November 2014 extreme right wing party Britain First attempted to march from Rochester train station to the war memorial on the highstreet, where they intended to deliver a hate-filled eulogy to the people of Medway. Less than 60 Britain First supporters turned up, and were met by 300 plus local residents, made up of people from all walks of life who turned up to protest against intolerance. After a stand off on the highstreet that lasted less than 2 hours Britain First failed to reach their target and attempted to break through the human barrier violently, at which point Kent police intervened and ended the march. Kent police did a magnificent job of keeping the peace on the day.

The history of, and tour around, Rochester Cathedral

Upnor Castle. 1080p HD

Due to its sheltered position, close to London, the River Medway was used to build and repair warships, and to moor them in ordinary, that is with the rigging sails removed. To protect this fleet, Queen Elizabeth and her Privy council ordered in 1559, that a bulwark be built on the river at Upnor in the parish of Frindsbury for the protection of our navy.[1] Six 'indifferent persons' selected a site opposite St Mary's Creek and 6 acres (24,000 m2) of land was purchased for £25 from Mr Thomas Devinisshe of Frindsbury. The bulwark was designed by Sir Richard Lee, but the building was supervised by Humphrey Locke and Richard Watts.[2] The building cost £3,621. Stage one was finished in 1564. A further £728 was immediately spent on lead for the roof. In 1564 twenty three ships of the Queen largest ships were moored in Bridge Reach.[3]

In 1582, the Queen held a review of ships at Upnor, in honour of the Duke of Anjou.[1]

In 1585, at the instigation of William Bourne the Master Gunner, a chain was laid across the river, as this was more effective than gunfire in sinking enemy ships. The castle however was inadequately manned, and further modifications were planned.[3]

In October 1599, Sir John Leveson's estimate for new works was accepted. A timber palisade was placed in the river, the water bastion was raised to a greater height with a parapet of good height and an enclosing ditch 18 ft (5.5 m) deep and 32 ft (9.8 m) wide dug to protect the castle from the landward side. This was costed at £761 9s 10d. 612 tons of rag-stone and 223 tons of ashlar was removed from Rochester Castle. The project overspent by £488.[3]

The 1599/1601 modifications were extensive, looking at the plans you can see that only the central tower was in the original build. The North and South Tower (the flankers) and the gatehouse and the wall that connected them, forming the courtyard were from 1599, as was the well.[original research?]

Much of this was altered in 1625, and again in 1653. In 1623, Upnor had 18 guns of various sizes.
